Chapter 589:
He finally stepped forward, raising his hands in a desperate attempt to mediate.
âWait, Mrs. Stevens. Is what they said true? Did you really have all these affairs? And Miss Johnson, is it true you had an affair with your ex-husband⦠at your own engagement party?â The two women both fell silent, refusing to meet his eyes.
Melanyâs usual smug composure had hardened into a steely glare while Lindy, on the other hand, was still shaking with fury. Even the young man, usually naive and trusting, finally caught on.
âThis is unbelievable,â he muttered, the disappointment thick in his voice. âYou two are acting like thieves pointing fingers at everyone else.â
He threw an embarrassed glance toward Allison, who stood off to the side with her arms folded, observing the chaos with an unbothered expression. His face flushed with shame. âIâm sorry. I didnât know they were this kind of people.â
Allison didnât mind what he had said. However, the other tourists, whoâd been strung along by Melany and Lindyâs lies, were less forgiving. Phones were fished from pockets, cameras rolling, capturing every second of the spectacle.
âI thought they were down on their luck,â one woman sneered. âTurns out, theyâve just been using us as shields. Absolutely shameless!â
âWhat a joke. And they call themselves âaristocratsâ?â another voice chimed in, dripping with contempt. âHow disgraceful!â
âThey preach about their grand marital love,â scoffed someone else, âthen turn around and expect us to foot their bills? If theyâre what counts as âhigh society,â then Iâm embarrassed for them.â
The words hit Lindy like a barrage of blows, each insult scraping away at her composure. Her face turned pale. She was so angry that she could barely stand.
Finally, she exploded. âShut up! The Stevens familyâs business is none of your concern! Just⦠get out of here, all of you! Out!â
Allison smirked, content to watch Lindy dig her own grave deeper with every arrogant retort. The woman had always been arrogant due to her status, but she wasnât particularly sharp. She didnât realize that the more she pushed, the angrier the crowd grewâthe very people sheâd looked down on now rising against her.
And as expected, a few bold onlookers stepped forward to meet her scorn with a simmering disdain.
âOh, so now youâre going to act all high and mighty in front of us?â one scoffed. âWe couldnât care less about your family name!â
âRight,â another jeered. âStevens Group canât push everyone around. Iâm from the neighboring cityâgot a problem with me? Bring it on.â
Their taunts hit Lindy one after the other, leaving her reeling, her once-defiant stance starting to waver. Beside her, Melany mentally cursed her mother-in-lawâs impulsiveness. Idiot.
They were only feeding the flames by fighting back
Thinking quickly, she pasted on a look of feigned helplessness and swayed her body just slightly, enough for anyone to think she might collapse. âPlease,â she whimpered, âdonât be like this. Lindy⦠sheâs just concerned and a bit confused.â
But for the first time, her act backfired. The crowd didnât buy it. They backed away.
