Chapter 588:
Kellan continued with his cutting tone, âLast night, it was Miss Johnson who thought she could win a bet and joined. Turns out, she misjudged herself and lost. And Colton â ever the white knight â played the hero and got himself detained.â He leaned back, stressing his disdain with every word. âAnd yet here you are, blaming Allison. Foolish and wicked â what a combination.â
Melany was rendered speechless. Her face paled at his accusation, while Lindy simply stared, slack-jawed.
All this time, Lindy had convinced herself it was Allison who had lured Colton into that den of debt and despair, latching him to Muisvedoâs underground casino and its ruthless collectors. But now, the ugly truth twisted before her eyes: Melany was the real culprit, the one who had dragged her son down!
It all made sense now, why the girl had been so evasive, glossing over crucial details. She was hiding it â trying to keep her hands clean.
Lindyâs shock turned to a slow-simmering rage, and as she turned to Melany, her gaze narrowed with the heat of her wrath. âMelany.â The name was a barely restrained growl. The moment their eyes met, Lindyâs rage erupted.
In a swift motion, she raised her hand and struck Melanyâs cheek with a resounding slap. Her whole body was practically shaking with fury.
âSo, it was you, you reckless little thing! You gambled and lost, then roped my son into your mess!â
Unable to go after Allison or the others, Lindy poured all her fury into Melany, the one person she knew wouldnât fight back.
The onlookers gasped, but Lindy was too far gone to care. The years of pent-up anger sheâd buried deep inside had finally bubbled over, and now she was letting it all out.
âIf it werenât for you, Colton wouldnât have suffered like this! You ungrateful wrecker of homes!â
Raised in luxury and unaccustomed to anything so crude, Melany stood there, her cheek burning, a vivid red mark spreading across her delicate skin. She looked startled and disheveled, but not a trace of sympathy showed on anyoneâs face. She tried to muster a defense, her voice cracking, âColton and I are married â weâre a team. If he helped me, that was his decisionâ Ah!â
Her words were cut short as Lindyâs hand struck her again, faster and harder. Seeing Lindyâs hand rising for yet another blow, Melany realized the woman had completely lost her mind!
This time, Melany didnât hold back. She grabbed Lindyâs wrist mid-swing, holding her off.
âLindy! I never told you Colton lost any money! All I said was heâd been detained at the casino. I was panicking! I didnât give you every detail. And itâs not like you even asked me to explain!â Her words only added fuel to Lindyâs fury.
âHow dare you talk back to me like that!â Lindy seethed, her voice rising. âYou fed me half-truths and left me to assume the worst. Do you really think I donât see you for what you are?â
The two women, once allies in playing the victim, now turned on each other, each showing their true colors. And the young man who had stood up for them earlier found himself painfully out of place, hovering awkwardly nearby.
