Chapter 594:
Allison held her silence, but Melanyâs face crumpled. She was the perfect portrait of wounded innocence, a performance designed to sway â or at least mislead â the crowd.
âAllison, if you insist on dragging this out,â she murmured, âthen by all means, letâs continue.â
After all, she had plenty of tricks up her sleeve â enough tricks to take a slap without really feeling it. But Allison merely scoffed. âOh, weâll continue â but donât think you can cheat your way out. It has to be a real slap to count, Melany. None of that half-hearted nonsense.â
Melany stiffened, stunned by her audacity. âYou!â
The gossiping crowd watched with anticipation, eager for the drama to continue.
âWell, what are you waiting for?â someone called out from the sidelines. âWeâre all here to see some action!â
âYeah, donât keep us hanging! Think of the money coming your way. Make it count!â
âCome on, show us youâve got a little fight in you! Put some force in it!â
âYou were both just weeping like lost souls, claiming youâd do anything to save your family. Well, hereâs your chance â donât waste it!â
Melany bit her lip, grasping for words that refused to come. She and Lindy shouldnât have drawn these fickle onlookers in. Now they were paying the price for their mistake!
âSorry, Lindy, but I might have to go a bit harder on you next time,â Melany said, drawing in a deep breath.
In truth, she had been waiting for this chance to blow off some steam. Lindy had humiliated her one too many times, and this moment was her perfect opportunity to hit back, and all with a legitimate excuse.
Oblivious to Melanyâs real motives, Lindy swallowed her frustration, trying to remain calm. âItâs fine, go ahead,â she muttered. After all, it was the only way to save Colton. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, bracing herself. It was just one slap, and she reasoned that Melany wouldnât overdo it.
But Lindy was in for a shock.
The slap landed with a stinging crack across her face, snapping her head to the side.
This wasnât like the rehearsed slap from moments ago â this one was fierce, and it left Lindy utterly stunned.
Melany feigned concern, apologizing, âOh, Lindy! Iâm so sorry! Are you alright? I didnât mean toâ¦â
Despite her show of remorse, a sense of satisfaction bubbled up inside her. Finally, sheâd gotten a bit of her own back.
Lindyâs face burned with fury. She clenched her fists, her restraints crumbling. âYou did that on purpose, didnât you?â she hissed.
âNo, Lindy, it was an accident, I swear,â Melany began, but Lindy cut her off with three quick, hard slaps of her own, each echoing in the air.
