Chapter 595:
Stunned and dizzy, Melany felt that her vision swam. This old witch must have lost it!
At that point, Melanyâs patience snapped as well. âLindy, I told you it wasnât on purpose!â
âYou liar! Youâve been holding a grudge against me this whole time!â Insults flew back and forth as their tempers boiled over, shattering any pretense of civility or strategy.
The careful plotting they had agreed on was entirely forgotten as they lashed out in anger.
Watching the chaos unfold, Ferdinand leaned on his hand, amused. âThese two are really going all in. Keep going! Iâll throw in another one hundred and forty thousand!â
Rebecca rolled her eyes at him. âDonât give them extra earnings. What if Miss Johnson takes your money and thinks the amount I gave for the slap wasnât enough?â she said, clicking her tongue. âWhat, are you offering to cover the difference for me?â
Ferdinand shrugged, replying, âWell, forget it. Iâm not paying a cent for this circus act.â
Meanwhile, Melany was scrambling to fend off Lindyâs fury, retreating as she tried to calm her down. âLindy, please, letâs get it together. Coltonâs still out there, waiting for us! Now, just stay calm.â
Lindy shot back, âI am perfectly calm!â
Seeing her ready to strike again, Melany finally dropped the act and grabbed Lindyâs hand firmly. âLindy, look around! Everyoneâs watching us make fools of ourselves!â
Lindy froze, her pride her utmost concern. In her own home, she could lash out all she wanted, and the servants wouldnât dare breathe a word. But out here, the crowd was enjoying every moment of the drama unfolding.
Melanyâs cheeks burned red from Lindyâs slaps, making her look genuinely pitiful. âWeâre just doing what Allison told us toâ¦â
Her cheeks were red, her eyes brimming with tears from the sharp sting. The old hag really went all out, she thought bitterly.
In the end, the one pulling the strings was Allison.
Speaking each word slowly, Melany asked, âAllison, are you satisfied now?â
This time, her tears were real, her face throbbing from the relentless blows. Lindy, looking just as worse for wear, stood with her hair disheveled and a wild glint in her eye.
She glared at Allison with an intensity that bordered on malice. âHavenât you had enough yet? Youâre truly vicious!â
Rebecca stepped forward, defending Allison without missing a beat. âIf youâre so offended, then donât take the money! Feeling insulted, huh? Then leave!â
Lindyâs expression darkened as she realized she couldnât win this standoff with words alone. She took a deep breath, tempering her anger. âWhatâs the current total?â she muttered.
