Chapter 684:
He continued his approach, almost within armâs reach.
Allison instinctively slipped a hand behind her, fingers brushing the hilt of her combat knife. She was prepared to fight, prepared to do whatever it took to survive this.
However, just in the nick of time, a knock sounded on the conference room door.
It was Jarethâs voice from outside.
âBoss, Subject 75 has gone feral. The teamâs asking if we should administer the suppressants.â
âIâll go take a look.â Verruckt frowned, casting one last glance around the room.
He could feel something was off, but with the test subjectâs sudden outburst, he had to address it first.
The door clicked shut, and Allison allowed herself to exhale, feeling the stiffness in her limbs as she unfolded from her crouched position.
âGordon, check the surveillance. Is it clear to move?â
She had no way of knowing if Verruckt would return, but every instinct screamed that she needed to make her exit â now.
Verrucktâs presence was more foreboding than ever â an aura far darker than it had been on that deserted island years ago. Who knew what shadows had shaped him since then?
But it was Amyaâs voice that came through the earpiece. âMs. Clarke, Gordonâs trying to hack into the labâs system, but⦠itâs tougher than expected.â
Before she could reply, Gordonâs voice broke in, low and terse. âIâm in. I can scramble their data, but only for ten minutes. After that, their security goes back up, and weâll lose any advantage.â
âTen minutesâ¦â Allison murmured, considering the slim margin. âI think we need to find Lilian within that time. If we donât act now, everything weâve worked for goes down the drain.â
But Gordon didnât fully agree with this idea. What worried him more right now was her life.
âAllison,â he said carefully, âlisten to me. This place is rigged with enough tech to catch a ghost. One slip, and every alarm here will light up like the Fourth of July. We canât risk this; thereâs too much at stake.â
But Allison was locked onto the narrow window of opportunity.
She had to take it.
âGordon, patch me into Kellanâs line.â
âBut Allison, youââ
âListen to me,â Allison said firmly. âI know the risks, but we wonât get another shot like this. Theyâll crank up security, and getting in next time will be impossible.â
