Chapter 618 Agnes was planning to play the long game.
First, sheâd snatch Nocturne from Jared.
Then, sheâd retreat back to Manhattan and live incognito.
She was certain Jared wouldnât be able to find her.
And if it came down to a court battle, Agnes wasnât scared.
She and Jared had divorced before Nocturne was even born, and Nocturne had grown up with her. There was no way the judge would award custody to Jared.
What Agnes was worried about was Jared playing dirty, and the law not being able to stop him.
Agnes said, âJared, I think we need to calm down and talk this out.â
âIâm calm, Agnes. Spit it out.â
Agnes looked at Jared, his mood as icy as a snowman.
Agnes collected her thoughts, saying, âNocturne canât be without me. You should know this after having him with you for so long.
He has congenital neurasthenia. Iâve been treating him for years. No one knows his condition better than me, and no one can take care of him better than me. If you really care about Nocturne, you canât take him away from me, Jared.â
Agnes was telling the truth.
She had become a pro at taking care of the sick after all these years.
Nocturne couldnât live without her care.
More importantly, she couldnât live without Nocturne.
Nocturne was her rock.
Jared, however, stayed silent.
He was deep in thought, seemingly considering what Agnes was saying.
Agnes continued, âJared, youâre getting engaged today. This is not where you should be. Getting engaged means youâre starting a new family. Have you thought about how Valeria would feel if you insisted on keeping Nocturne around? Have you thought about what the media would say about Nocturne showing up out of the blue? Theyâll claim heâs your love child. Nocturne will be the talk of the town, and Valeria might not accept him. It wouldnât be fair to anyone.â
Jared coldly responded, âFair? Iâve been fair to everyone. Has anyone been fair to me? Your words are pointless, Agnes. I wonât let Nocturne go with you.
Agnes didnât expect her words, even bringing up his fiancée, to have no effect.
Seeing Jaredâs determination, Agnes struggled to keep her cool.
âJared, what do you want? Nocturne is my son, I wonât leave him. If you want to take Nocturne from me, youâll have to kill me.â
Agnes was equally resolute.
Jared was determined, but she couldnât give up.
Even if it meant a hardâfought custody battle was on the horizon.
Agnes lifted her head, continued, âJared, Iâm not the same Agnes you knew four years ago. You should know that Iâve managed to stay off the radar for four years, even your sprawling data network couldnât find me. Iâm not afraid of a custody battle, and whoâs to say Iâd lose?â
Jared spoke up, âI wonât drag you to court, I donât want Summer to get hurt.â
Agnes was taken aback, âThen what do you plan on doing?â
Jared paused for a few seconds, locking eyes with Agnes, and calmly and firmly said, âMarry me again!â
