Sisterly Love
I struggle to open my eyes as I observe my surroundings.
"You're awake?" Someone asks.
I turn my direction to Nathan, who's holding what seems to be a shirt in his hands.
"I hope not," I mumble, slowly sitting up. Then I let out a groan. "We have school, don't we?"
Nathan chuckles. "Thats correct, Minnie Mouse."
"Shit. But I don't even have anything to wear. Plus, I wore this yesterday," I tell him, gesturing to my outfit. "I'm a mess."
"A hot mess, babe. Now here," Nathan throws me one of his hoodies. It's one that I recognize: his maroon hoodie. "Wear that."
He just fucking called me 'babe'.
I smile like an idiot. "Thanks."
He throws me a wink. "No problem."
~
I follow behind Nathan as we walk over to his motorcycle. He hands me his helmet and I immediately place it on my head. "I'm still surprised I haven't died on this yet," I state, having a hard time getting on the seat.
Once I've found my balance, I awkwardly wrap my arms around Nathan.
I can feel his muscles tense, but I ignore it.
And then we're off. The ride is quiet, so I decide to admire the scene going by. It seems as if everything around me is just a big blur.
Soon enough, we stop in front of school.
"Uh, I'll go first," I immediately say, as I struggle to get my little legs over and off the seat.
"Okay," he says, scratching the back of his neck. "Want me to drive you back home, too?"
My lips quirk up into a smile. "I'll be fine."
He gives me a smile, too.
Then, I turn around and start making my way toward the front entrance. Once I'm inside, I head to the second floor so I can get to my locker. And I'm worried as fuck.
I'm worried for my older sister, hoping that she's alright from last night's event.
"Don't stand in the middle of the hallway, bitch," I hear, as Heather Bronson shoves past me with her friends. I forgot she still exists.
I let out a sigh and make my way to my locker. Sadly, Bella texted me earlier saying that she was sick, so I won't be seeing her today.
As I head to my first class, I spot Nathan chatting with one of the volleyball players. He's been talking to her a lot lately, especially when we were on silent terms with each other.
I gotta remember that we literally just started talking yesterday after like 3 months.
The volleyball ball player is pretty, I'll give her that. But, she's giving me bad vibes.
I decide to ignore them, as I head to my last period.
I feel someone grab my arm tightly, as they force me to turn around and face them. Gemma stares at me blankly. "Where the fuck were you?" She asks harshly.
I pull my arm away. "I was at Nathan's house."
She runs her fingers through her hair. "Mom was worried sick about you. Why the hell didn't you answer your phone?"
I shrug my shoulders.
She lets out a tired sigh. "Once school ends, head straight to my car."
"And if I don't?" I question.
"I'll kill you," she answers simply.
I nod my head and she walks away.
~
I wait at Gemma's car, until I finally spot her heading over to me.
"Hi," I greet her.
"Get in the car, loser," she says, opening the door.
"Bitch," I mutter, as I take a seat and close the door.
"I heard that," she says, as she slowly backs out of the parking lot.
I smile as I stare out the window. "Good."
The rest of the drive is silent, as we finally reach our house.
We exit the car and make our way to the front. Gemma pulls out her keys and unlocks the door. Mom is sitting silently in the living room. As we step in, she turns to us and puts her finger to her lips. "Ruby is sleeping upstairs," she whispers.
Ruby. I never imagined that we would be saying that name in this house again. But here we are: speaking about the youngest in the family.
Gemma nods her head and motions me to follow. "What are we doing?" I whisper.
"We're going to meet our little sister," she replies. "I never got to say anything to her last night."
My face scrunches up in confusion. "Where's- where's our dad?"
She doesn't answer, so I keep quiet.
Once we reach the top of the stairs, we head to one of the guest rooms down the hall.
Gemma slowly opens the door, and sitting on the bed wide awake, is Ruby.
Her head snaps in our direction, startled by our sudden appearance.
"Hi," Gemma says softly, breaking the silence.
Ruby averts her gaze. "Hi," she mumbles.
My sister beside me nudges my shoulder. I face her, and she nods her head toward Ruby. "Go," she mouths silently.
I take a few steps forward and sit on the bed.
"Uh hi, Ruby," I say awkwardly.
She glances up at me. "You're Opal?" she asks shyly, a tiny of embarrassment in her face.
I smile and nod my head. "That's me."
She smiles, too. She's so freaking beautiful, just as she was when she was 6 years old.
I feel the bed dip beside me, and I turn to see Gemma sitting as well.
"Where's Dad?" Ruby asks quietly.
"Dad- he's somewhere right now," Gemma answers.
So for about an hour, we sat there talking about life. And let me just say: I love my sisters to the moon and back.
