I Could Change That
â ï¸Nathan's P.O.V.â ï¸
"Wait, let me get this straight," Will says, holding up his hand. "You confessed your undying love for this girl, and you're not even gonna ask her out?"
We're currently at my house, relaxing in the living room on this Thursday afternoon.
"To be honest, that's messed up," Derek comments, as he steals a few chips from my bowl.
"Guys, she just found out that her sister is still alive," I state, "so I'm not gonna stress her even more by asking her to be my girlfriend."
Will lets out a sigh and turns to Kyle. "What do you think about all this?"
Kyle shrugs his shoulders. "I respect Nathan's decision on how he's dealing with this."
"Okay," Will says, throwing up his hands in defeat. "But you better claim what's yours before others do."
I raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"It's Opal Rodriguez, Nate. Before you came, I had some friends that claimed they liked her," Will tells me. "Hell, even I liked her at one point."
I stare at him blankly for a few moments. "When was this?"
"When was what?"
"When you liked her?" I question.
Will shrugs. "It was probably last year," he admits. "Don't worry, though. It's all gone now."
I nod my head.
"Yea, don't you like her best friend now?"
I quickly turn to Derek beside me. "Bella?"
He nods his head. "Yea. Will likes that chick now."
I raise my eyebrows in shock as I turn to face Will again. "And when was this?"
He scratches the back of his neck awkwardly. "At the party a few months ago," he mumbles. "But anyway she's not really talking to me now."
"Wish I was at that party," Derek sighs.
"Kyle, do you like anyone?" I ask.
"Maybe I do. Maybe I don't. The world may never know," he replies.
~
I ring the doorbell and wait for someone to answer.
After a while, the door clicks open. "Oh hello, Nathan. How are you?"
I give Opal's mom a smile. "I'm good, thank you."
She opens the door wider. "You can call me Angela if you'd like, dear. Now come inside."
I nod my head and step into the house.
"I assume you're here for Opal?"
I nod my head.
She gives me a cheeky smile. "She's probably in her room reading. It's the first door on the right."
"Thank you, Angela," I tell her, before heading upstairs.
I find a closed door and give it a knock.
"What's the magic word, ugly?" Opal voice calls out from behind the door.
"My ass, gorgeous," I reply.
"Oh shit," I hear her mumble, and soon the door opens, revealing her in a shirt and sweats. She still manages to look breathtaking.
"Hey, Minnie Mouse," I greet her, and she runs her fingers through her hair.
"Sorry, I thought you were Gemma," she says, biting her lip in embarrassment. "Why are you here?"
I stick my hands in my pockets. "I just wanted to see how my favorite girl is doing."
She gives me a smile and shoves my shoulder lightly. "Shut up. I'm girl number 42."
I pull on a frown. "Babe, I thought I told you you're my main chick."
She's practically beaming now, and I can feel my heart skipping beats. "You still remember that?" She asks.
"You think I'd forget?" I question back, slowly leaning closer.
She bites her lip, trying to hold back from smiling even wider.
"If- if you guys are gonna k-kiss, I can look away right now if you want," I hear someone say in the room.
We turn our attention to the young girl sitting on the bed. She looks so similar to Opal and Gemma.
"Oh, I forgot," Opal says, facing me again. "Nathan, this is Ruby. Ruby, come here."
The young girl nods her head and slowly walks to us. "Hi," she says quietly.
"Hey, Ruby," I tell her, giving her a smile. "I'm the guy that's in love with your sister."
I feel a hard smack on my shoulder and immediately burst out laughing.
"Nathan, shut the hell up," Opal says. "We aren't even dating."
I could change that, though.
We hear a small chuckle come from Ruby as she stares at our little conversation. "You guys are cute," she comments, an adorable smile on her face.
I throw a smirk at Opal before facing the young girl. "I know right. But I don't think she likes me back."
"I-" Opal quickly stops herself before letting out a tired groan. "Did you come here just to bother me?"
"What if I did come here just to bother you?" I ask, a cheeky grin on my face.
She leans closer. "Then you're going to have to leave, sweetie."
"Well, I'm going outside to relax," Gemma tells us, as she passes by the room.
"Gemma, can I come?" Ruby asks quickly.
"C'mon, baby girl," Her older sister replies, and Ruby rushes out of the room to follow her.
I turn back to Opal. "It's just you and me, Minnie Mouse."
She rolls her eyes, before saying, "I haven't heard that in a while."
A smirk creeps on my face. "I could say it all day if you like," I tell her, giving her a wink.
She lets out a sigh before smiling at me. "Let's go outside," she says, taking my hand. "You look like you need some fresh air."
~
I watch as Opal tries her best to run away from her little sister, but Ruby is faster than she looks.
In no time, Ruby taps her sister's arm. "Opal is it!" She announces proudly.
I start running when Opal's eyes land on me.
She starts running like a maniac, as Ruby catches her breath beside Gemma, who's currently sitting on the bench with a book in her hands.
I immediately feel someone jump on my back, and I turn around before hitting the ground, so I don't fall on my face.
Opal lands on top of me, still laughing from our little chase.
Once she calms down, her brown eyes seem to search for something as they stare at mine.
"How are you?" I ask breathlessly.
She lets out a chuckle. "Happy, actually. I feel quite happy."
I smile at her.
"How would you feel about being my girlfriend?" is the next fucking question that leaves my mouth. Shit.
Her eyes widen, and I panic into thinking of something else to say.
But my mind goes blank when she leans down, closer to me. Strands of her hair tickle my face. She leans close enough until her lips are practically touching my ear.
"Better catch me if you want me," she says quietly. Then she leans away with a playful grin on her face, before standing up and jogging away.
"You're it, smartass," she calls out to me.
I immediately force myself up and run after her.
She lets out a yelp when my arms wrap around her waist and I pull her toward me.
She's laughs in my grasp, her hair falling onto her face. I steady her and brush away the hair with my fingers. "I caught you, Minnie Mouse."
"No shit, dumbass," she says jokingly, as she leans forward and plants her lips on mine.
It didn't take that long for me to kiss her back.
