Chapter 1492
Steven asked again, âIâve been yakking my jaw off, Iâm parched, Can I come in for a drink?â
Jeo was soft-hearted, and Steven had just done him a solid. He wasnât about to leave him high and dry. âCome on in.â.
Jeo went inside first to brew a pot of coffee for his ex-son-in-law. He wasnât sure if Steven would fancy his best coffee, though.
Steven wasnât a big fan of the strong aroma of this coffee, but beggars canât be choosers. Any coffee was good coffee. âI can drink anything.â
Jeo quickly brewed the coffee and poured a cup for Steven. âI do owe you one for standing up for Hannah earlier.â
Steven said, âHannah is my wife. Speaking up for her is a no-brainer.â
Jeo said, âYou guys are divorced, and sheâs not your wife anymore. You know that the last person Hannah wants to see is you. So, once youâve finished your coffee, scram before she wakes up.âe2
Steven felt like heâd been stabbed in the heart, but he kept a poker face. âAlright, Iâll play by your rules.â
Jeo said, âAnd donât show up here anymore.â
Steven paused for a second as he lifted his coffee cup, but quickly regained his composure. âSure, rest assured, I wonât darken your doorstep unless Hannah agrees.â
Steven agreed readily, and Jeo thought that was the last heâd see of him. But the next day, Steven showed up in the village again. He wasnât here for Hannah; he was here for business. He was warmly welcomed by the local authorities and was taken to their model village for a visit..
After yesterdayâs events, Steven became the talk of the town. Everyone had only good things to say about him. As soon as he entered the village, people recognized him. âHoly cow, isnât that the son-in-law of the Ableson family? Why is he with the leaders who are touring the area?â
Someone said, âMaybe heâs the driver for the leaders.â
The person who made this comment got punched. âOpen your eyes. Which driver walks ahead of the leader?â
âSo, who is he?â
âLooks like heâs a big shot.â
âI heard heâs an investor from Harbor City and is going to invest billions here to boost tourism.â
âWho told you that?â
âIt was in todayâs news. Didnât you watch the news? Oh, I forgot, some of you canât read.â
The news wasnât confirmed, but the word that Steven was an investor from Harbor City spread like wildfire. Neighbors once again crowded in front of Hannahâs house. Their attitudes had changed dramatically, all smiles now. âHannah, where are your folks?â
It was the afternoon, and the autumn sun was just right. After lunch, Hannah was lounging in the rocking chair in the yard, soaking up the sun. She took off the hat shielding her face and looked at the people entering the yard. âMy parents are at the store. What can I do for you folks?â
Kate answered, âWeâre here to see you, not your mom. Your dad said yesterday that you havenât been feeling well lately, so we brought some chickens and eggs from our coops to help you get better.â
