BILLIE AND VALERIE WERE sprawled out on the couch, an awkwardly large bowl of popcorn between them, the tv showing a rom-com that neither of them were really watching. billie had her head resting on valerie's shoulder, her feet propped up on the coffee table, while valerie scrolled aimlessly through her phone, occasionally chuckling at something random she found online.
"hey, vei," billie said suddenly, her voice muffled from the position she was in.
"hmm?" valerie responded, not taking her eyes off the screen.
"i just realized i could totally win at this," billie said, a mischievous smile creeping onto her face.
valerie looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "win at what? you're literally watching the movie, not even paying attention."
"exactly," billie said with a grin. "i bet if we turned it off, i could still guess the plot. give me a minute."
valerie snorted, clearly not believing her. "yeah, sure. go ahead."
so billie started making up a ridiculous plot for the rom-com they weren't paying attention to. "okay, so the girl's gonna fall for the cute guy, but then-plot twist-he's secretly a spy. oh, and the best friend? they're definitely secretly in love with her, too. classic move."
valerie laughed so hard she almost dropped her phone. "okay, i'll give you that one. but i'm betting it's not even that dramatic."
billie threw her hands up in mock victory. "we'll see," she said, laughing.
they turned the tv off, and billie proceeded to enthusiastically narrate what she thought was going to happen next in the movie. "and now the girl's definitely going to end up with the other guy, right? and she's gonna pick him because he's been secretly supporting her all along, but she had no idea. classic romantic comedy trope."
valerie rolled her eyes, smiling. "you're ridiculous."
they both ended up laughing so much that they almost forgot they were even trying to predict the plot anymore. it was just one of those lazy days where time passed without them noticing, and everything felt easy.
later, when the credits were rolling, billie nudged valerie's side. "i'll totally win at the next thing," she said.
"you're on," valerie grinned, throwing the popcorn bowl onto the couch before pulling billie into a playful arm lock. "but next time, you have to try harder. no more cheating."
"who's cheating? i'm just naturally good at this stuff," billie said, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
valerie didn't even try to argue. she just smiled, resting her head on billie's, feeling at peace in this little world they had created.
