âHey! What are you guys doing?â someone shouted angrily from the side.
The pressure on her arms and legs was gone, and she could breathe again.
Rayna gasped desperately for air as the person removed the pillow from her face and patted her on the cheek.
âAre you okay, Ms. Garland?â
After taking a moment to regain her composure, Rayna slowly opened her eyes.
The person calling out to her worriedly was the woman who had greeted her the other day.
âWhat happened? Who are you?â
âSomeone wanted you dead, so they planted their men in the police station. After finding out about your arrest, Mr. Hamilton got me in here so I could look after you,â the woman replied softly.
Jefferson?
Rayna lowered her head and saw eight women lying on the ground.
They had been beaten up so badly that were barely breathing.
Rayna broke into an icy-cold sneer when she looked up and saw the broken surveillance camera. âOh, so this is why I couldnât request a solitary cell.â
âAre you currently experiencing any sort of discomfort, Ms. Garland?â
Rayna shook her head. âNo, and itâs all thanks to you. Whatâs your name?â
âEmerald Clocklore.â
âClocklore? Are you and Ringo related?â Rayna exclaimed.
âNo, weâre not.â
After asking Emerald a few questions, Rayna finally understood what was going on.
Jefferson had sent Emerald over to Norwal City after recognizing Rayna. She had been working for Faymon Group in a lower-
level position.
She was the one who made the arrangements for Geraldâs car accident.
Emerald had been protecting Rayna in secret ever since she received her orders two weeks ago.
After finding out about it, Rayna didnât get mad at all.
âWhile I donât like him having people follow me around, my babies and I wouldâve been dead if you hadnât been by my side tonight.â
Usually, Jefferson would be the first to step in to save her whenever she was in danger.
Sometimes, Rayna wondered why the two of them simply couldnât be together even though he was such a nice man.
After a while, some of the women were starting to regain consciousness.
Rayna glared at her and asked, âWho sent you all to kill me? How much did that person pay you all?â
âIt was Mr. Cyrus,â the woman replied.
Rayna grabbed her by the chin and said with a sneer, âDo you really think I donât know Cyrus? That guy always resorts to dirty tricks! He would never attempt something this bold!â
âItâs up to you whether you believe it or not!â the woman replied with a frown.
Emerald yanked her out of Raynaâs hands and punched her in the face. âTell us the truth!â
That punch was so hard that it left the woman stunned for a few seconds while blood flowed out of her nose.
After coming back to her senses, the woman screamed at the top of her lungs, âHelp! Someone is trying to kill me!â
The door opened immediately, and the police officer, who had been gone for the entire night, came rushing into the cell.
The look on his face turned gloomy when he saw what was going on. âWhat are you all doing?â
The woman screamed, âGet me out of here! Theyâre trying to kill me!â
âOh, looks like Iâve made myself a really powerful enemy here! He got so many people involved just to get at me!â Rayna sneered when she saw the police officer call for backup.
âWatch what youâre saying, Ms. Garland!â said the police officer.
Rayna shot him a cold glare in response. âWhat? I didnât mention your name, did I? Why are you getting so nervous?â
Realizing that Rayna was trying to trick him into spilling the beans, the police officer panicked and stopped talking immediately.
He waited for his colleagues to arrive before escorting the women out of there, leaving Emerald and Rayna in the same cell.
âWho else do you think couldâve done this if not Mr. Cyrus?â Emerald asked.
Rayna glanced at her tummy that had gotten slightly bigger.
Suddenly, she recalled how Emma had glared viciously at her when leaving with Selena. In fact, Emma had even threatened to get at her.
âI think I know who it is,â Rayna replied with her lips pursed.
The date of Raynaâs trial was drawing closer, but she had yet to receive a call from her assistant.
It was possible that someone at the police station was deliberately preventing her from receiving the phone call.
Emerald told Rayna not to lose hope, as Jefferson would definitely be on his way to rescue her.
When her trial was three days away, a police officer brought a visitor over to the cell.
âRayna Garland, you have a visitor.â
Rayna assumed it was a lawyer at first.
It wasnât until she looked up and saw the beautiful face outside the bars that she froze in shock.
âHello, Ms. Garland. I came here to collect something. I heard about your lawsuit, so I figured Iâd drop by and pay you a visit,â
Wendella said politely, her high heels clacking loudly on the floor as she made her way over.
Rayna flashed her a polite smile in return. âItâs an honor to know a famous diplomat like you, Ms. Sainz.â
Wendellaâs lips curled into a faint smile as she replied, âOh, Iâve already resigned. As you know, I had to return to the country because of my marriage. Itâd be hardly appropriate for me to continue working overseas after getting married.â
Rayna frowned upon hearing that.
Wendellaâs smile widened when she noticed her response. She continued, âI know youâve done a lot to help Faymon Group in the past. I also know that youâve been very useful to Curtis. I would like to help you in your time of need as well.â
Raynaâs heart was aching, but she did her best to hide it. âThank you very much, Ms. Sainz. My trial is in three days. Could you help me contact Mr. Faymon and tell him about my situation? I would appreciate it if he could testify for me in court.â
âHeâs really busy. I havenât been able to get through to him. Curtis told me heâd pick out a wedding ring when he left for his business trip. It seems he really has his hands tied with work,â Wendella said with an awkward expression.
Of course, Rayna could read between the lines and knew exactly what she was implying.
So much for coming here to collect something... I bet she came here to humiliate me on purpose! I canât believe a diplomat like her is resorting to such petty tricks! This is such a waste of resources that her parents have provided her with!
Rayna flashed her a faint smile. âOh? Are you getting married to Mr. Faymon soon? In that case, allow me to congratulate you, Ms. Sainz. Thereâs no need to contact Mr. Faymon if you canât get through to him.â
âI hear they have really strong evidence against you, Ms. Garland. You are going to lose unless you have someone testify for you,â Wendella replied.
âYeah, I know. The trial is still three days away, so Iâm in no rush. Who knows, Mr. Faymon might just return on that day,â Rayna said nonchalantly.
Noticing that Wendella had gone silent, Rayna continued, âAfter all, I am Mr. Faymonâs ex-fiancée. He had that duck stew delivered to me because he didnât want me to go hungry. No one expected things to turn out like this. Heâll definitely try to help me out if he knows Iâm being sued, so I have no need to worry.â
âIs that what you have in mind, Ms. Garland? Are you not afraid of getting him in trouble?â Wendellaâs expression turned gloomy.
Rayna let out a soft chuckle as she replied, âHe wonât help me if he feels that way. Oh, please donât get the wrong idea, Ms.
Sainz. Thereâs nothing going on between me and Mr. Faymon. I just happen to know him very well, and heâs partially responsible for this incident.â
âOh, I understand. You knowing him well doesnât affect my trust in him at all.â
âThatâs good to know. The last thing Iâd want is for you to think that Mr. Faymon still loves me. I donât want to ruin your relationship like that.â
The corner of Wendellaâs lips twitched slightly.
She thought she had mastered the art of dealing with people after working abroad for so many years, and yet, Rayna had bested her with ease.
âYou sure have a way with words, Ms. Garland!â Wendella said with a forced smile.
Rayna pursed her lips. âThank you. Mr. Faymon said that too. He never dared argue with me because he knows he canât win.
Instead, he finds other ways to bully me.â
The look on Wendellaâs face was as cold as ice. âI still have some stuff to take care of. Iâll be on my way now!â she said and stormed off immediately.
âBye, Ms. Sainz!â Rayna called out to her from behind.
