The steam engine was now completed. They watched it huff, puff and spin.
âWhat was Vinyl like before the Transfer?â Ixia asked.
The young man paused, and his eyes fell still. The question seemed to take Magenta to a faraway place. A place he seldom visited. A place he avoided.
Ixia felt that this was not a place to be visited right now and quickly changed the topic.
The discussion and the test runs went on.
Magenta glanced at his loverâs tender, delicate face. He smiled for himself. An infinite playground? Why was it just not entirely satisfying? Was it just ego, or something more complex?
âTime to get Grizzel, heâs about to have a big surprise.â

âThe wyverns are hungry today,â Wing said.
There was a loud cracking sound, and Arcturus looked satisfied.

âThat one just chewed straight through the bone. These two are good ones, growing strong and hungry. This is a great forest patch for them.â
Arcturus was focused on two vigorous wyverns, each the size of triceratops, highly engaged in a tussle to compare each otherâs height. âI think these boys will soon mature. Breedinâ seasonâs cominâ. Competitionâs on.â
âWe should get Vinyl a gift. Something special.â said Wing, not paying attention.
âYou ainât touchinâ the wyverns.â
âWha...? Fuckâs sake, âcourse not!â said Wing, catching on.
âYou do your giftinâ then,â replied the dragon. âIâll be hunting down the local food places.â
âAlright dude, off to Syracuse.â
Wing jumped on the Dragonâs back, and they flew off towards the city, the giant wings beating the winds into submission.
As they flew, Arcturus turned is head towards his friend.
âWing,â he said, âMake sure you donât cause a mess. Leave people be.â
âI know, I know,â he replied. âBut these Paradisers are just so irritating.â
âYeah, and they think weâre a bunch of nutjobs. Iâd agree with them after what you did. They ainât goinâ anywhere so watch your mouth.â
Wing insisted. âBut you know, thatâs not how we were born, right? And you know that thereâs more to life than what they think of it. Theyâre just full-on escaping.â
âWho cares what you think? Weâre just a bunch of geezers who refuse to let go of past struggles to them.â The dragon gave him a very stern glare. âDonât mess up again.â
âYou can stop bringing that up anytime, bitch!â Wing fired back.
âNah! you ainât close to havinâ understood anything.â
Wing slapped the Dragonâs back, but the latter barely noticed.
âJust shut up and do your business. You create any drama and Iâm chasinâ you back home with hellfire. Let these people be.â
âFine, fine,â said Wing, begrudgingly as they landed a good distance away from the city.
