Chapter 431
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Edgar opened his mouth to speak but was silenced by a sharp look from Jake. âMr. Reeves,â Edgar began, rubbing his temple, âMiss Nixon is right. You need to consider your safety. If your real identity is exposed, the Reeves family wonât let you off so easily.â
Jake shifted his position, crossing his long legs with an air of casual elegance. His fingers drummed rhythmically against the armrest of the sofa. He sat there, the serene backdrop making him look as though he belonged in a painting.
âDidnât you notice anything unusual about her?â Jakeâs tone held a note of suspicion. âA drug that strong wouldnât have any side effects.â Jakeâs voice grew firmer as he continued, âEdgar, no matter what I do next, donât try to stop meâand donât inform Kallie behind my back. I know youâve been in touch with Lenny. What exactly did he tell you? Be honest.â
Edgar sighed deeply before answering. âHe said there are definitely side effects. But unless she chooses to reveal them, no one will know.â
Jakeâs eyes darkened as he absorbed the information. âIf she doesnât want to tell me, I wonât push her. Just make sure she isnât troubled further.â
Meanwhile, in her room, Kallie was suffering from a splitting headache. Curled up on the bed, her clothes were soaked with cold sweat. The door hadnât been fully closed when Kallie entered, and Sophie caught a glimpse inside.
âMommy?â Sophieâs voice was soft as she gently pushed the door open, calling out to Kallie. When Sophie stepped inside, she froze in shock at the sight of Kallie trembling on the bed.
âMommy! Mommy!â Sophie dropped her toy and rushed to Kallieâs side, tears streaming down her face. âMommy, whatâs wrong? Are you in pain? Let me help you!â Kallie managed to open her eyes, Sophieâs tear-streaked face filling her with guilt and sorrow.
Kallie tried to lift her hand to wipe away Sophieâs tears but found herself too weak to manage it. âDonât cry, sweetheart. Iâm okay.â She forced out a smile. Kallie was unaware that her smile only made her look more unwell.
Sophie, terrified, began to back away, her sobs intensifying. âMommy, donât worry! Iâm going to get Jake! Everything will be okay!â
âSophie Nixon!â Kallie called out sharply, using Sophieâs full name in desperation. âDonât go! Iâll be okay!â Her tone was harsh, stopping Sophie in her tracks.
Reluctantly, Sophie returned to her motherâs side. âBut I hate seeing you in so much pain. Jake is amazing. He stayed with you when you were sick, and because of him, you got better. If I call him now, Iâm sure youâll feel much better.â
Kallie sighed softly, brushing a hand through Sophieâs hair to comfort her. âIâm really okay, sweetie. I just need some rest. If you stay here and sleep with me, I wonât feel any pain.â
Sophie nodded, her expression serious as she slipped off her shoes and climbed into bed beside her mother. Kallie leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on Sophieâs forehead. Holding her daughter, Kallie felt the pain begin to subside, soothed by the warmth of their connection.
But Sophie, curious as always, couldnât stay quiet for long. âMommy, do you not like Jake?â she asked hesitantly.
Kallie paused before responding, âNot really.â
âThen do you like him? You never treated other men who liked you the way you treated Jake.â
âI didnât treat Jake any differently,â Kallie replied.
âDifferent. Youâre more patient with Jake,â Sophie commented, her voice innocent but observant. Kallie was momentarily at a loss for words. After a brief silence, she asked with a sigh, âDid Jake tell you to say this to me?â
