Chapter 888
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

The assistant, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, nodded vigorously.
Thankfully, by evening, Clayton was out of danger. The first thing he did when he woke up was look for Kallie. Kallie was sitting right there beside his bed.
Claytonâs eyes lit up when he saw her.
âKallieâ¦â he began.
Clayton trailed off when he noticed Calvin sitting next to Kallie. Prompted by Kallieâs subtle glance, Calvin greeted Clayton.
âClayton, are you feeling okay? I finished school early today, so I came to the hospital with my mom to see you.â
Claytonâs initial joy evaporated, but he forced a smile and patted Calvinâs head.
âIâm fine, buddy, just a little under the weather,â he replied.
Calvin nodded seriously.
âYou need to get better soon, Clayton. Elma said she is eager to meet your future girlfriend.â
Kallie chuckled.
âThatâs true. Itâs time for you to settle down.â Kallieâs words were a clear message to Clayton.
Claytonâs grip tightened on the white bedsheet, and his eyes reddened. He wanted to question Kallie on why she treated him with such harshness despite everything he had done for her. But the sight of Calvin silenced him, a wave of resentment washing over him.
Kallieâs children with Jake were a constant thorn in his side.
Kallie rose from her chair and carefully adjusted Claytonâs quilt.
âThe doctor stressed the importance of rest, but I feel thatâs not enough. Iâll arrange for some private nurses and consult a specialist about your heart condition. You were always so healthy. Thereâs no reason for you to languish like this,â she said, her voice laced with concern.
The mention of another doctor triggered a wave of anxiety in Clayton, causing him to cough uncontrollably.
âThereâs no need for that,â he rasped.
Calvin shot Clayton a curious look.
âClayton, I understand you donât want to be a burden, but your health is paramount. My momâs just looking out for you. The doctors here keep hinting that somethingâs amiss, but with the advancements in medical technology and our vast resources, I refuse to believe there isnât a solution out there.â
Clayton glared at Calvin, but he couldnât muster a convincing counter-argument.
âI know my own body.â
âItâs simply not necessary,â he stated.
Kallie glanced at her watch and gently patted Calvinâs head.
âAlright, sweetheart, youâve been here long enough for today. Iâll have Gilbert drive you home.â
Calvinâs brow furrowed.
âMom, arenât you coming home with me?â he asked, disappointment tinging his voice.
Kallie shook her head.
âClayton needs someone to keep an eye on him. Iâll stay a little longer, but Iâll be back tonight. If youâre tired, go to bed early,â she explained.
