Chapter 1613
When Love Comes Late
Stella recalled Devynâs reaction whenever she saw Matthew.
She nodded thoughtfully and went upstairs without saying anything more.
Matthew waited until Stella entered the bathroom before he returned downstairs to look for Erin.
âDid anything happen the day Devyn came to Prosper Bay?â Matthew asked in a low voice.
Erin thought for a while.
Then, she replied, âI brought milk to them as you ordered.
When Devyn offered her help, she accidentally spilled the milk on Stella.
So, I took Stella to change her clothes.
Other than that, I donât remember anything special.
â
Matthew frowned, and his expression became serious.
âSo, only Devyn was left in the study at that time?â
Erin nodded affirmatively, stating, âYes, for a short while.
I then went in to tidy up, and Stella returned shortly after.
â
Matthew nodded contemplatively.
âUnderstood, youâre free to go.
â
Once Erin departed, Matthew retreated to his room, his mind consumed by thoughts.
He was nearly certain that Devyn had acted deceitfully behind Stellaâs back.
However, lacking tangible evidence, his suspicions remained unsubstantiated.
Moreover, Stella harbored a close bond with Devyn, refusing to entertain the notion of her friendâs betrayal, even if he voiced his suspicions to her.
Furrowing his brow, Matthew became engrossed in contemplation.
Emerging from her shower, Stella noticed Matthewâs furrowed brow, indicating a preoccupation with something troubling.
Rushing toward him, she voiced her concern.
âWhatâs troubling you? Has something happened at the company?â
Matthew snapped out of his reverie, shaking his head.
âNo, nothing of the sort.
Iâm just a bit fatigued.
â
Stella grasped Matthewâs hand reassuringly, settling beside him.
âIn that case, you should rest.
â
Gazing into her tender eyes, Matthew contained the turmoil within him and tenderly ki*sed her forehead.
âYou too.
I understand your eagerness to be chosen and to interact more with Bella.
There will be ample opportunities ahead.
Donât let sadness overwhelm you.
â
Stella responded softly, âI know.
â
Despite her words, melancholy lingered within her.
As they readied themselves for bed, Stella tossed and turned, unable to find solace in sleep.
Aware of her thoughts, Matthew refrained from probing further.
Instead, he held her close, offering gentle reassurance.
In his embrace, Stella found solace, eventually drifting into a peaceful slumber.
Once she was asleep, Matthew rose cautiously and dialed Nikolaiâs number.
The phone rang persistently before finally establishing a connection.
