Chapter 1625
When Love Comes Late
Dazed, Devyn thanked him and exited the office.
She bit her lip as she walked toward the ICU, feeling defeated.
Stella followed close behind, concerned and unsure of how to help.
Peering through the ICU window, Devyn saw her mother, Maureen, connected to a ventilator, looking fragile and vulnerable.
Tears began to roll down Devynâs cheeks.
She remembered how, as a child, she always saw her mother as invincible.
But now, her mother seemed just a breath away from leaving her.
Witnessing her friendâs distress, Stella remained silent for a long while before softly asking, âWhatâs wrong with your mother?â
Devyn glanced at Stella and choked as she disclosed Maureenâs condition.
Her eyes were red, and tears streamed down her cheeks.
Recalling how Devyn appeared a few days earlier, Stella felt a surge of sadness.
She hadnât realized Devyn was struggling so much.
âWhy didnât you tell me sooner? I could help you sort this out,â
Stella offered.
Devyn clenched her fists and shook her head.
âThereâs nothing you can do.
Please, just go.
â
In that moment, Stellaâs kindness only highlighted Devynâs wrongdoing.
Yet, she knew she couldnât alter the harsh reality.
Devyn couldnât stand to see her mother in pain.
She was determined to do whatever it took to save her.
Assuming Devyn was reluctant to burden her, Stella suggested, âIâll get Matthew to see if he can help.
â
Just then, Devynâs phone buzzed.
She checked it and saw a threatening message.
âDonât do anything foolish.
Follow my instructions, or your mother will suffer.
â
After reading the message, Devyn felt a wave of dizziness.
She snapped at Stella, âStop.
Iâve told you to leave.
I donât need your help!â
Stella noticed Devyn getting all worked up and hesitated.
Her mouth twitched a bit, but ultimately, she chose silence, walking out of the hospital without a word.
Just as she exited, Matthew came up, wrapping his arm around her with concern etched on his face.
âWhatâs up? Why the sudden hospital trip?â
Stella met his gaze, feeling a bit worn out.
âDevynâs mom got sick real bad and things took a turn.
I came to be there for her.
â
