Chapter 1626
When Love Comes Late
Remembering Devynâs earlier reaction, she sighed.
âYou might be onto something with your hunch.
Looks like Devyn mightâve done something to upset meâ¦â
She furrowed her brows, replaying her chat with Devyn.
âBut it seemed like she was under some pressure or something.
â
Matthew pondered for a second.
âWhat makes you think that?â
Stella spilled all sheâd seen and heard at the hospital.
âWhen I offered to help, she got a text and hurried me away like she didnât want to be seen with me.
â
Matthewâs face turned serious as he mulled over it.
âLetâs not jump to conclusions.
Weâll see how things unfold, no need to stress.
â
Stella nodded.
âYeah, now that Bella has selected her favorite work, letâs put an end to this matter.
The big deal on our plate now is our wedding.
â
Back at the hospital, as soon as Stella left, Devyn hit up someone on the phone.
Her hand shook as she waited for the call to connect.
The woman on the line not only held her brothersâ lives but also knew where her mom was.
She felt like she was being played by that woman and she had no clue who she was.
When the call finally went through, Devyn exploded, yelling, âWho the heck are you? Why are you messing with my mom? I did everything you askedâ¦â
Devyn broke down in tears.
She wasnât fully convinced it was the same person who showed up at Maureenâs room until that text popped up, and then it clicked.
Their only mode of communication was calls and texts, leaving Devyn clueless about who the mysterious woman was or why she was dragging her into this mess.
Elizabeth didnât deny a thing.
Instead, she chuckled and said bluntly, âLooks Like youâre
slacking.
Iâm just reminding you to step it up.
It isnât my problem that your momâs condition suddenly deterioratedâ¦â
âYouâ¦â Devyn tried to retort but Elizabeth cut in, âWeâre in this together now.
Youâre about to inherit Bellaâs gig with a bright future ahead.
Donât make me sweat over this.
â
Devyn shook with anger, convinced this person was behind her momâs sudden turn for the worse.
Looking at her mom in the ICU, it took Devyn a moment to speak up.
âIâll do whatever you want.
Just leave my mom be!â
Elizabeth sneered.
âI couldnât care less about your mom.
Keep doing what I say, sheâll be fine.
â
Devyn swallowed her rage and asked sternly, âWhat about the promise for the kidney donor?â
Hearing the despair in Devynâs voice, Elizabeth stayed cool.
âDepends on how well you do your job.
If you make Stellaâs life hell and make me happy, youâll get what you need.
â
With that, Elizabeth coldly hung up the phone.
Devyn wanted to say more but all she got was that annoying busy signal, so she reluctantly dropped her phone.
