Chapter 1638
When Love Comes Late
âSlater, thereâs a fire in the studio.
Can you come right away?â
When Matthew and Slater arrived, Devynâs studio was filled with thick smoke, and a big fire was burning.
The firefighters were working hard to put out the flames.
Looking around, Slater couldnât see Devyn anywhere.
He nervously grabbed one of the studio employees and asked, âWhereâs Devyn?â
The employee, still shaken from escaping the fire, was startled by Slaterâs question, taking a few seconds to respond.
Raising his voice, Slater repeated, âWhereâs Devyn?â
âSheâs inside,â the employee said, pointing toward the studio with a shaky hand.
âSheâs trying to save her design sketches.
She hasnât come out yet.
â
Slater let go of the employee and stared at the fire, feeling his heart race.
Without hesitation, he tried to go into the studio, but a firefighter stopped him, saying, âSir, itâs dangerous.
Please step back.
â
âMove! Someoneâs inside!â Slater pushed past the firefighter and yelled, âDevyn!â
But there was no answer.
Feeling anxious, Slater broke free from the firefighter and went inside.
Right after, two rescuers hurried in after him.
Covering his nose, Slater called out for Devyn, but stopped after one shout.
Devyn was desperately searching for her design sketches in the flames, seemingly oblivious to the danger of the fire as she protected each sketch.
Seeing this, Slater grabbed Devyn and pulled her toward the exit.
She struggled, but Slaterâs strength overpowered her.
Dragging her away from the fire, Slater scolded with frustration.
âForget those papers! Your lifeâs more important! Donât you get it?â
But Devyn wouldnât give up.
She struggled, begging, âTheyâre not just papers! Please, I need to go back.
My designs, my computer, and my USB are in there! I have to save them!â
Struggling to break loose from Slaterâs hold, she pushed and pulled, but he held on tighter, determined not to let go.
Slater pushed down on her shoulders and said firmly, âThatâs enough! The flames raged so wild, that nothing could be saved.
Everything meant to be gone was already ash!â
âNo, it canât be!â Devyn denied, vigorously shaking her head, unwilling to believe it.
âYouâll only get hurt if you go back! What if something happens to you? Whatâs your mother going to do then?â
After hearing this, Devyn looked like all her energy had been drained, and she stopped struggling altogether.
She sobbed uncontrollably, her words catching in her throat, âMy sketchesâ¦â
