Chapter 1896
When Love Comes Late
She escorted Bella to the elevator and watched as they stepped in.
Then she turned around to find Cordell standing still, waiting for her.
Stella hurried over, asking nervously, âWhatâs wrong with Matthew? Is there anything wrong with his health?â
Recalling Matthewâs previous complaints of headaches, Stella grew increasingly anxious.
Glancing around, Cordell murmured, âItâs not suitable to talk here.
Letâs find somewhere more private.
â
Stellaâs heart sank at his somber tone.
Meanwhile, Matthew took her hand and shook his head, which only added to her confusion.
Cordell took them to his office.
Once there, he assured her, âDonât worry, Stella.
Matthew is fine.
Itâs actually about you.
â
Stella felt a wave of relief.
âAbout me? What is it?â she asked.
âItâs about you and Bella,â Cordell replied.
Caught off guard, Stella felt as if she had been struck by lightning when Cordell revealed, âBella is your biological mother.
â
She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came.
After a moment, she shook her head and protested, âDonât play such a joke on me.
We had a maternity test before.
It said Bella and I arenât relatedâ¦â
Although she had secretly hoped Bella could be her mother, Stella dreaded being disappointed again, dismissing her hopes as mere fantasy.
Cordell handed her the test report, explaining, âWhen Bella last came for a physical examination, Matthew asked me to arrange another maternity test.
Here are the results.
If you still have doubts, we have Bellaâs
biological sample here.
We can test it again.
â
Stella scrutinized the report, her gaze fixed on the conclusion stated in the last line: âThe test conducted by the center confirms a biological mother-child relationship between the owners of the two samples.
â
Her vision blurred as she read the report over and over, her mind going blank.
Holding the report, Stellaâs hand trembled involuntarily.
Mixed emotions surged through her, a blend of turmoil and excitement.
Matthew grasped her hand, trying to soothe her.
âThere was an error with the earlier report.
It seems someone tampered with it.
â
Memories flashed in Stellaâs mind.
She remembered the day she got a few strands of Bellaâs hair in the coffee shop.
As her thoughts clarified, a name surfaced.
âElizabeth! Itâs her!â Stella exclaimed, looking urgently at Matthew.
âThat day I collected Bellaâs hair at the coffee shop, Elizabeth was there too.
She knocked over a cup of coffee.
She must have swapped the original sample at that moment.
â
Matthewâs response was noncommittal, his expression unreadable.
Stella murmured, a realization dawning upon her, âDid she already know Bella is my mother? Is that why sheâs always been against me?â
It seemed the only plausible explanation for all the events that had transpired.
