Chapter 111
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âSiena, your daddy, is blowing up my phone again-he just canât take a hint.â I hissed and turned off my phone, so I wouldnât have to look at the missed phone calls.
âIt took you long enough!â Dario smiled from a distance and held a bouquet of roses in his hands.
âIâm sorry.â I apologized as I pushed the stroller and made my way toward him. âIâm not used to people showing up on time.â
âThat must mean Christian keeps you waiting, but fortunately for you, Iâm not Christian,â Dario spoke as he handed me the roses. âYou bought me roses? No one ever bought me roses.â I awkwardly laughed.
Even though I promised myself not to think about him, my mind went back to Christian. He never bought me roses, and I never asked for them. He would waste his money instead to buy me the most expensive gifts.
âI even brought one for your daughter.â He smiled and pulled out a toy rose. âI thought she might eat it, so.â He shrugged and handed her the rose. âShe will still eat it, but the effort is nice.â
âIs she laughing?â I asked after hearing her giggles. Dario smirked and raised his head to look at me. âOf course, sheâs laughing. Sheâs in my presence.â
âYouâre unbelievable.â I laughed at his serious reaction. It was weird to explain, but it didnât feel like I was talking to a stranger. I hated meeting new people, and I was an awkward person-but Dario and I clicked from the moment we met.
âSo what do you have planned for us today.â Dario wondered. âWell.â I started. The funny thing was that I hadnât even planned a thing and just went along with everything because he asked me to. âI thought we could take a walk so I can show you around, eat something-and then I can introduce you to my best. friend.â
âReally? Iâm excited to meet your best friend. Dario smiled. âWell.â I sighed. âHe used to talk just as much as you, but considering the circumstancesâ¦â
âVincenzo Garcia?â Dario asked with a guilty look on his face. âThis is not a sad conversation.â I laughed. and pushed his shoulder. âIâm glad it isnât. I canât stay serious for too long.â Dario laughed and wrapped his arm around my shoulder. âIs this okay with you?â
I flinched for a second and needed some time to get used to his touch. The only man other than my family who was allowed to do that was Christian. At least, thatâs what I made myself believe-
because, unlike him, I was loyal.
âThis is fine,â I spoke as I turned my face towards him and returned the smile. âI have to say. You look even more beautiful from up close.â Dario flirted. I hadnât realized how close our faces were until he made that comment, and I didnât know how fast to turn my head. âWe should go.â
Dario and I took a nice walk around the city, and I had no bad word to say about him. Perhaps if Christian took the chance to get to know him, he wouldnât hate him that much, and the two might even get along. âYou know, you remind me of Christianâs cousins.â I told him.
Dario was a gentleman like Johnny and had a playful personality like Luca.
âFirst a Garcia, and now I remind you of a Lamberti?â Dario scrunched up his nose while I laughed at his reaction. âDonât be like that. My daughter is a Lamberti.â
âOh, no.â He gasped and leaned over the stroller to tickle Siena, âI wasnât talking about you. Youâre just as sweet as your mommy.â
âShe really likes you!â I spoke after hearing her giggles. âShe only laughs with her family. Sheâs actually not a fun baby at all-I just say so because sheâs my baby.â
âKind of like Christian?â Dario commented while I gave him a confused look. âChristian is not a good fiancé at all. You just say so because heâs your fiancé. Dario smirked while I rolled my eyes.
His words were meant to be a joke, but he was right. Christian was not the good fiancé I made him out to be, but I always gave him a pass. There was nothing to say about his parenting skills because Christian was an amazing father, and I had nothing to complain about, but in terms of being a fiancé, he still had a lot to learn.
âWhy are you with him? I mean, I know about your past so that we can skip that part-but how did the two of you get together?â Dario wondered. It was nice to know that the news about my past had even reached the other side of the country.
âIâm with him because I fell in love with him.â I smiled as I thought about the past. âItâs almost like the story of beauty and the beast. He seemed unapproachable at first-but we somehow ended up falling in love with each other-â
âAnd he changed back into a prince?â Dario scoffed. âI highly doubt that.â
âSerena, letâs go.â He mimicked Christianâs tone while I laughed at his spot-on impression. He was right. Christian was far from the prince and pretty close to the beast. Only a beast would cheat on a pregnant woman, so why was I even defending him?
âSerena, did you fart?â Dario chuckled. âWhat, me? No!â I spoke embarrassed and looked at Siena.
âI think itâs her. She poops so much I became immune to the smell.â
Dario shrugged his shoulders and leaned forward. âBlaming the baby for your actions?â He spoke as he moved his nose closer to Sienaâs diaper. âNever mind, it really is her.â
âI told you it wasnât me. Youâre so stupid.â I laughed out loud. âMy bad,â Dario spoke and locked his hand with mine. âIs this okay, or is Christian going to kill me?â
âItâs fine, but I have to push the stroller,â I mentioned. A few days ago, I wouldâve cut off his hand, but after what Christian had done-something like this didnât faze me. âWe can push it together.â He spoke as he squeezed my hand.
Together we pushed the stroller until we were at a nearby park where I could change Sienaâs diaper.
âLet me take care of that.â Dario smiled and wrapped his hand around my wrist to stop me. âDo you even know how to change a diaper?â I chuckled at Dario, who had a serious look on his face.
âI love babies. I know how to change a diaper-thank you.â He smirked as he grabbed the diaper and the wipes from my hand. I watched him like a hawk while he changed Sienaâs diaper and was surprised by the results. He actually knew what he was doing.
âAll done!â He spoke to Siena, who babbled back. âWhat is she saying?â Dario frowned and looked at me. âSheâs a baby. How would I know?â I shrugged my shoulders. Only one person spoke baby language and translated everything Siena said, and that person was Christian.
I just couldnât stop thinking of him.
âYouâre gorgeous. Too bad you donât have a twin sister, I might just have to go for your brother.â
Dario complimented me. His compliments were nice, but it felt wrong, and I didnât know how to take them.
âThanks.â I smiled. âIâll tell Beau that youâre interested.â
âSo, how do you like this town?â I asked as he took Siena in his arms again.
âIâve seen some interesting stuff. I like it.â Dario spoke. âNow tell me, whatâs Christian up I had prepared myself for this to happen and knew they had some weird rivalry going on, but I was not ready to spend my entire day talking about Christian as if thinking about him wasnât bad enough already. âHeâs been busy with a lot of projects, right?â
I took a deep breath and held back my words to satisfy him. âYes.â I nodded my head and hoped for the conversation to end as soon as possible. âDo you know what kind of projects orââ
âWe donât discuss that, and I donât really care.â I immediately stopped him from asking. He was starting to look like the other girls, and we had such a great time-but somehow, everything led back to Christian Whenever someone had a conversation with me, it led back to Christian, and I slowly got sick of it.
âThatâs really good.â Dario smiled and finally got the hint. âWhy are you so interested in Christian?â I asked him. âI really like you, but heâs still my fiancé, and I wonât turn against him-just making it clear.â
âNo, I know Iâm just curious,â Dario smirked. âHeâs an idiot who doesnât realize how good he has it, but the two of you are still together-thatâs great.â He shrugged his shoulders. âHow would you know?â I chuckled.
Dario was right. Christian was an idiot who did not realize how far I was willing to go for him. He was a liar, a cheater-but even all of that couldnât stop the amount of love I had for him, and only I was allowed. to talk about him that way.
âAnyway, if you planned on getting more information so you can work on your evil plan to bring him down, which is obviously not going to work because itâs Christian-then you shouldnât have asked me, but his personal assistant instead.â I leaned back and shrugged my shoulders while Dario had a startled look on his face.
âW-what?â He muttered. âI told you I donât care about whatever all of you are doing-as long as all of you keep Siena and me out of it, I donât care. Iâm just here to live a quiet life.â I yawned.
âI see.â Dario nodded his head. âYou donât have any issues with the personal assistant? The two of you are good?â
âOf course we are. She has been here for four months-and she never caused any trouble.â I praised Gina. At the moment, she was probably the only one who kept him from turning into a mess.
âFour months? Thatâs a short time-I wouldâve expected at least six.â Dario eyed me suspiciously as I went into deep thoughts. âNo, four-we met her for the first time at the hospital, after I gave birth to Siena.â
âInteresting Dario chuckled to himself while I gave myself an imaginary facepalm. âI really need to stop talking about him-anyway, youâre a nice guy, and I like your presence, but youâre not getting anything out of me.â
âVery clear.â Dario smiled. âI already know everything I have to know.â
âI didnât know you were a wizard.â I joked as I prepared Sienaâs bottle. Despite the questions about Christian and the clear intentions behind them, being with Dario felt nice and comfortable. âI can give it to her.â Dario offered and grabbed Siena from my hands. âShe really looks like you. Itâs funny.â
âIt is.â I sighed. âI waited for months-just to push out another version of myself. Itâs a bit sarl.â
âI think itâs beautiful, and so is Siena,â Dario spoke and stared at her as he gave her the bottle. âNow I also want a baby. Canât we just make another one?â
âWe can make one right now.â I joked and pointed to the dumpster behind him. Dario gave me a disgusted look and shook his head. âYouâre even a bit too wild for me.â
âYouâre the one encouraging it,â I spoke as I stared into his eyes. It felt nice to joke around freely, without having to worry about him getting any mood swings or saying the wrong things. We matched so well, it almost seemed unbelievable. âSerena, you seem like a good person with a good heart, and people might take you for granted sometimes. I have something to say to you, but Iâll say it at the end of the day.â
âJust say it now. I hate waiting.â I complained and rolled my eyes, but Dario shook his head. âWe should visit your friend first. Iâll tell you after that-I promise, but I donât want to ruin your day.â He sighed.
I tried to read the expression on his face, but he still had the same kind smile as usual. âOkay, if thatâs what you want.â I giggled and grabbed Siena from his hands. âShe fell asleep in your arms, cute.â I pouted and kissed her cheek before I smiled at Dario.
âNow, letâs go and visit my friend-so you can tell me this ânewsâ of yours later on.â
