Chapter 1551
The Day I Kissed An Older Man
Annie nodded and said, âYes. Our family used to be considered normal working class people, but
Uncle Jeremyâs protection enabled US to become quite well off. You could even say that I was the
daughter of a rich family. Now that Uncle Jeremy isnât around, those who used to do business with our
family for my uncleâs sake no longer do so anymore. Thatâs life, am I right? One look at the men that
my familyâs been introducing to me on these blind dates, and youâll be able to see just how far weâve
fallen. They never wouldâve dared to introduce someone like that to me when Uncle Jeremy was
around.â
Aaronâs initial focus was on Annieâs situation, but he did not realize how big of an impact Jeremyâs
disappearance had on her family. Things had become very
challenging for them.
âNow that your uncle is gone, perhaps you can ask your parents if theyâre interested in having a son-in-
law who can turn things around?â Aaron suggested. âI might not be as influential as Jeremy, but I do
have some connections and influence in the cityâs business scene.â
Annie was bewildered by his suggestion, and she turned away in embarrassment. âStop with your
jokes!â
âIâm not joking! Why do you always think Iâm joking with you?â Aaron frowned.
âBecause Iâve heard you say so many sweet nothings to so many women,â
Annie said, averting her gaze from him. âI canât tell the truth from lies, so Iâm not even going to bother
trying! And I donât want to get hurt again. All the men Iâve had the bad fortune of encountering are
jerks!â
Aaron was a little helpless when he heard that, but he smiled and said,â Well, I am a bit of a jerk, so I
donât blame you if you donât believe me.
However, Iâm not lying when I say I can help your family in this crisis. Are you sure youâre not going to
take advantage of my offer?â
Annie hesitated and glanced at his irresistibly handsome face. However, she looked away at once,
fearing that another lingering look might lead her to agree.
After all, her self-control was very weak! âIâm sure. I donât want to owe you any favors.â 1 Aaron looked
into her eyes. âWhat if I donât see this as a favor? Iâm more than willing to make myself useful to you,
even if only to make amends for any harm I might have caused you.â
âNo.â Annie shook her head. âYou donât have to make amends because you never hurt me in the first
place. I did it to myself. If you truly want to help me, I hope youâll leave me alone right now and stay as
far away from me as possible!â Aaron seemed a little hurt as he asked, âDo you hate me so much that
you wonât even look at me? Can we at least be friends if you donât want to accept my help?â
âI donât hate you,â Annie clarified, âbut I donât want to be friends with you either.â
Rather than becoming upset, Aaron smiled. âThen tell me why. Give me a reasonable explanation, and
Iâll respect your decision.â
Annie could not offer a logical explanation as she was unsure of herself. She was afraid that her
emotions would spiral out of control, thus beholding her to his charm. The last thing she wanted was to
catch feelings again. The hurt she suffered from each successive failure was too agonizing for a
romantic like her!
âI⦠I just donât want to be friends with a jerk like you. Do I need to give you a reason?â
Aaron smiled and said, âYou donât, but I canât bring myself to watch after knowing that your family is
having it rough. Setting aside my history with you, I still must look out for you because youâre
technically my bossâ niece.â
âTo put it bluntly, Corinne only acknowledges me as her niece because of Uncle Jeremy, otherwise, Iâm
not worthy of calling her my aunt. Corinne has suffered a lot because of Uncle Jeremy, and no one
knows where he is right now. So, I hope you wonât feel compelled to help me just because of that.â 1
Aaron then argued, âYou can refuse my offer to help, but you canât refuse Corinneâs help, right?â
Annie then pointed out, âDonât tell her about this! Didnât you hear what I just said? Sheâs suffered a lot
because of Uncle Jeremyâs disappearance, and I donât want to burden her any further.â
âI donât think you grasp your auntâs character very well,â Aaron replied with a smirk. âLetâs look at it from
a different perspective. You might be reluctant to accept help from strangers, but does your family
share the same view? Can you bear to watch your parents constantly endure the pressures of the
family business? These issues can all be resolved very easily.â
