Chapter 589
Between Ruin And Resolve: My Ex-Husband’s Regret
Chapter 589:
The door was slightly ajar. She hesitated for a brief moment before gently pushing it open and stepping inside.
Alex lay in bed, his head wrapped in fresh bandages. A doctor stood beside him, speaking in a calm, measured tone.
âThe wound was properly bandaged, but keep it dry and avoid any strenuous activity. Itâs best to stay overnight for observationâjust in case of a concussion. Rest is crucial, and if you feel any discomfort, press the call button immediately.â
Alex gave a small nod. âThank you, doctor.â
The doctor returned the nod, then exited the room, shutting the door behind him.
Now, it was just the two of them. Alexâs gaze shifted to Sadie, and surprise flickered in his eyes. He struggled to sit up, wincing at the effort.
âSadie? What are you doing here? You donât have to worryâIâm fine.â He hissed, his breath hitching.
Sadie was at his side in an instant, pressing a gentle hand on his shoulder, helping him lie back down. A pang of guilt settled in her chest. She lowered her voice, her tone tinged with both concern and frustration.
âNext time, donât be so reckless. When thereâs danger, you have to think about protecting yourself first.â
Alex met her gaze, his eyes gentle yet unwavering.
He parted his lips as if to speak but hesitated, swallowing back whatever was on his mind. A long pause stretched between them before he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper, âI wonât let anything happen to you.â
Something about the way he said it unsettled Sadie, a warmth laced with an unspoken promise. Not wanting to dwell on it, she quickly redirected the conversation. âWhereâs Stan?â
Alexâs expression darkened, his gaze drifting downward.
âI sent him back to the company. There were a few things that needed handling,â he said, his voice quieter now. Sadie studied him, her concern deepening.

âYou should stay overnight. The doctor was clearâno unnecessary movement. Someone should be here with you.â
Alex simply shrugged, dismissing the worry with a half-hearted smile. âIâm not a kid, Sadie. I can manage.â His attempt at reassurance was thin at best. âWorst case, Iâll hit the call button and have a nurse fuss over me. Sadie, donât lose sleep over me. Just go home and rest.â
Sadie couldnât shake the unease gnawing at her. The thought of leaving Alex alone in this condition felt impossible. âNo way, Iâll have Jim help me hire a caregiver for you!â
Alex opened his mouth to argue, but before he could get a word out, Sadie had already pulled out her phone, her fingers moving with determined urgency as she dialed Jimâs number.
As the call rang, Alex watched her, a quiet warmth stirring in his chest. She still cared.
Jim, being the head doctor, should have had no trouble finding someone reliable to stay with him. But the seconds dragged on, stretching into a minute, then longer. No answer.
Sadie slowly lowered her phone, a crease forming between her brows. She was torn. Leaving Alex alone in this state didnât sit right with her. âMaybe I should stay. What do you think?â Sadieâs voice carried a hint of hesitation.
Alexâs eyes lit up instantly, though he was quick to school his expression into something more neutral.
