Chapter 1876
Mr. Kane Got Blacklisted
Stella recalled the days spent at the Saun family home.
Watching Wenhamâs tender care for the pot of roses, she noticed his demeanor softening. Was he seeing those roses as reminders of someone he lost long ago?â
âDad originally planned to build a greenhouse in the yard for them. He wanted to plant more roses, but then Darcie had an allergic reaction. So, he put that idea on hold,â Trevor shared.
Stella gave a wry smile. âThatâs quite the coincidence, isnât it?â
Her skepticism lingered. Riveraâs temperature rarely dropped below minus four or five degrees. Roses arenât that fragile. They shouldnât have perished after just two days of frost, even if they were a cultivated breed.
Of all the flowers, Darcie was allergic to the roses that Freesia loved so much. The issue did not seem entirely coincidental.
âTrevor, why did you deliberately knock over that bowl of oats when we were downstairs? Did you find out something? â Stella asked in a low voice.
Trevor shook his head. âIâm not sure. The nurse said the person who approached them was a man, but Darcie has never been with any man.â
âCould she have hired someone?â
âWhy would you risk using someone who isnât a trusted confidant for something as serious as taking a life?â
Stella fell silent. It was true; only those with a common interest were truly reliable.
She felt a chill run down her spine. âIf it really was her, then what kind of mindset did Darcie live with all these years?â She shuddered at the thought.
âStop thinking about it,â Trevor said, patting her head comfortingly. âFocus on taking care of the baby and yourself. Iâll handle everything else.â
Stella closed her eyes. If the plane crash resulted from foul play, it was likely that Darcie had taken precautions. Trevorâs investigation might put her in danger.
âShould we tell Dad about this?âBooks Chapters Are Daily Updated Join & Stay Updated For All Books Updatesâ¦
Trevor sighed. âAnd what would we say? We have no evidence, Stella. Dad cares deeply for his late wife, but he and Darcie have been together for twenty years. He canât act on an unproven accusation. It might even make him feel guilty for suspecting her.â
After a while, Trevor added, âIâm not fond of Darcie, but I really donât want it to be her. I was actually relieved when I found out it was a man.â
âIf it werenât for the plane crashâ¦â
Stella regained her senses and understood. Should Darcie be responsible for the incident, her father would likely be the most devastated.
Just as she was lost in thought, the sound of a car engine came from downstairs.
Trevor got up and said, âLetâs go. Keegan is here to pick you up.â
However, when they got downstairs, it wasnât Keegan who arrived, but Marshall.
He was wearing an all-white suit, standing in the living room talking to Wenham. Stellaâs first instinct was to turn around and go upstairs.
But before she could move, she heard Marshall say, âHappy New Year, Stella.â
Stella gave an awkward smile and replied, âHappy New Year.â
Then she asked, âWhy are you here so late?â
Marshall held up the bottle of wine. âI saw your post and thought, why not celebrate New Yearâs Eve together with a few drinks?â
