Chapter 39
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 39:
The sound of the bathroom door interrupted her reflections. A caregiver appeared, carrying a basin of water. Upon noticing Hadleyâs tear-streaked face, the caregiver nodded courteously.
âHello.â
âHi.â Hadley offered her hand. âAre you going to wipe his face?â
âNo, Iâm actually here to shave him,â the caregiver replied.
Understanding, Hadley observed Ernestâs face, noting the thick stubble that shaded his jaw. âIâll take care of that. I know how to do it.â
During Ernestâs initial hospitalization, Hadley had been the one to look after him. At that time, Nyla was overwhelmed with grief and illness, Eric was preoccupied with work, and Linda was expectingâ¦
Thus, Hadley had become the primary caregiver within the Flynn family. Caregivers typically deferred to such wishes from the family members. He set the basin on the nearby stand and passed her a towel.
âHere you go.â
âThank you.â Gratefully accepting the towel, Hadley dampened it and used it to warm Ernestâs face. She then spread shaving cream over his face and began the careful process of shaving him.
Engrossed in her task, Hadley didnât notice Linda enter the room. Limping slightly from her injured ankle, Linda approached and stopped by the bedside, staring at Hadley in astonishment.
âHadley, is that really you?â
Her expression turned into a frown. âWhat are you doing here? And why are you doing this?â
Looking up, Hadley responded, âI came to visit Ernest⦠and as you can see, Iâm shaving him.â
Linda chuckled lightly, a hint of amusement in her voice. âI can see what youâre doing.â
âAnd why bother asking, then?â Hadley retorted sharply.

âYouâ¦â
A silent standoff ensued as their gazes locked.
With a dismissive wave, Linda crossed her arms and sighed. âFine, youâve visited. Now you should go. We have caregivers; your presence isnât necessary.â
âIs that so?â Hadley responded smoothly, maintaining steady eye contact.
âYou just got here, and now youâre already sending me away? Whatâs troubling you, Linda? Feeling guilty about something?â
Lindaâs expression darkened. âWhat are you suggesting?â
âWhat am I suggesting?â Hadleyâs voice carried a mocking tone as she gestured towards Ernest. âEric isnât here, so thereâs no need to keep up the act.â Her eyes then flicked to Lindaâs abdomen. âWhat really happened back then? Can you live with your deceit, fooling everyone, even yourself? Think about it, Linda. Do you truly deserve Ernest?â
Linda looked bewildered. âWhat exactly are you implying?â
Hadley scoffed. âAll these years, donât you feel any remorse when you see Ernest?â
âIâm lost at your meaning!â
Visibly enraged, Linda gestured towards the exit. âLeave now! You have no place here!â
