Chapter 967: The person who killed me is one of your brothers.
Pampered by my three brothers: the return of the neglected heiress
There were only two types of people who would enter Finnâs ward without knocking: the first was Nina, and the second was someone who had bad intentions for him. Even the nurses would knock before coming in.
Who would have thought there was a third option?
"Penelope," Finn called, smiling the moment he recognized his visitor. "I didnât expect you to come here so soon."
"You got into an accident right after you met me, asking me to protect Nina," Penny remarked as she walked in, casually sitting down in the chair beside the bed. She took her time, leaning back and resting one leg over the other. "How have you been, Finn Davis?"
"Fine â better, actually. And you?"
"Iâm not the one who had an accident and fell into a coma. So, Iâm okay."
"Yet."
Penny slowly raised an eyebrow at him. "Yet?" she repeated, then chuckled. "No, never."
"Penelope, I was careful, but look what happened to me."
"Then that means youâre not careful enough, Finn Davis."
Finn pressed his lips together, chuckling with his mouth closed. "Youâre right. I might not have been careful enough to avoid falling for such an obvious trick."
"While you were in a coma, do you know how many assassination attempts were made in your life?" she asked, as though it were of little importance. "If you were careful enough, youâd have someone by your side to make sure you donât die in your sleep."
"I did come to you before I fell into a coma, didnât I?"
"Are you saying the accident was part of your plan?"
"I canât say it was part of my plan per se... but somehow, I knew my life was in danger." Finn maintained a friendly smile, though it didnât quite reach his eyes. "Iâm just glad I was able to reach out to you before it was too late. So, I guess I wasnât as careless as you make me out to be?"
Silence quickly followed his remarks as the two of them stared at each other. After a while, the corner of Pennyâs lips curled into a satisfied smirk.
"Welcome back from the dead, Finn Davis," she said, her voice full of satisfaction, which made his smile stretch even wider. "I thought youâd be a little different after your accident, but youâre still as sharp as I remember."
"If youâve spared me a minute of your time to come here, I shouldnât disappoint you, can I?"
"Iâm glad coming here isnât a waste of my time."
"And Iâm honored you feel that way."
"So?" Penny tilted her head to the side. "Which one should we discuss now, Mr. Davis? Was this a good time to catch up on what happened in the past? Or should I first ask why Jonathan is targeting you? Or perhaps the fact that you asked Yugi to protect Nina the moment you woke up?"
She paused, her eyes gleaming with intrigue. "Where should we start?"
"Telling you that Iâm not physically or mentally fit to discuss anything right now isnât going to cut it?"
"Try me."
"No need," he chuckled, moving the tablet from his lap to his side. "I already got my answer."
Penny didnât come here to play with him; she came for answers. Before the accident, Penny had just discovered the truth about Finnâthat, like her, he could remember his past life. However, she hadnât forced him to reveal more details, thinking that she had plenty of time to decide how much trust to place in him.
The accident changed everything.
This time, Penny was no longer hesitant to trust Finn. She had seen what she needed to see and learned what she needed to know.
"I might not be able to trust you completely, but I believe you in some things," she said truthfully. "For instance, I know you would never intentionally hurt Nina. That alone is enough for me."
Finn smiled. "Thank you for that, but the feeling is mutual, Penelope Bennet. I do not and cannot trust you completely. I hope you understand that."
"I would understand that, as long as you tell me the things I need to know."
"I donât have any issue telling you what you want to know, Penelope." His smile weakened, and he sighed. "Itâs just a matter of whether my truths are things you can handle."
"I can handle anything."
"Anything?"
"Test me."
"What if I tell you the person who killed me is someone you know?" he asked without a secondâs hesitation. "What if the person who killed me, while I was sitting in that same position as you are now, watching poor Nina lying on a hospital bed... is someone you call family?"
"..." Penny didnât answer, her eyes scanning Finnâs expression for any trace of deception. But she saw none.
He was hinting at the truth.
Penny drew a deep breath, her lips quivering slightly despite her strong front. "Yesterday, Jonathan told me something very interesting."
"He said... that one of my brothers..." she trailed off, forcing a smile as she looked him in the eye. "... killed Renren. Do you think thatâs possible?"
"I donât know if Zoren is dead, but if he is, then sadly, I died before him. So, I canât provide any details about that," Finn replied calmly, speaking of death as if it were of little concern to him. "But if youâre asking me whether your brothers are capable of doing something so horrendous, Iâd say... yes."
Finn paused, letting that sink in. "Iâm not saying anyone in particular, Penny. Iâm saying all three of them are capable of such a thing. After all, you and I, are probably more aware than ever how our lives have changed in this lifetime. You and I both know that not everyone around us is the same as they were. At least, a few of them arenât the same anymore."
"Thatâs clear to me after I woke up yesterday," he continued solemnly. "Back then, you and I... weâre also capable of soiling our hands. If we are capable, then anyone is as well."
"Youâre not being clear, Finn Davis."
"The person who killed me is one of your brothers." His answer was quick and unfaltering. "Thatâs what Iâm saying. Do you want to know which one, Penny?"
