A Life Debt Repaid By Cheng Xiaocheng Chapter 393
A Life Debt Repaid
âWhy?â Cordy asked, working hard to keep herself calm.
âIâll explain when I get back,â John replied.
âAre you going to announce your wedding date?â Cordy asked bluntly.
John was left silent for heartbeats, while Cordy made herself very clear.â Itâs already expected. It doesnât affect me at all.â
âThatâs not all-â
âYouâre scarily selfish, John,â she said, putting weight behind every word.
John felt his breath leave his lungs right then.
At the same time, Cordy continued, âWhether this marriage is by your will or otherwise, Jessica Stuart considers you her partner now. Itâs a legitimate relationship, so why would you keep clinging to me? Is this fair to her? Sure, Iâm not that much of a saint to sympathize with someone who wants me dead, but it still disgusts me how irresponsible you can be-to her and to me.â
âI will never marry Jessica Stuart,â John repeated, his tone somber and obviously repressing his rage.
âThatâs your business,â Cordy snapped, losing control as well. âYou can do whatever you choose. Iâm just doing my best to live my life, so could you please stop harassing me?!â
âJust donât come to Rocktown. I promise that from now on, I wonât bother you until Iâve resolved my personal affairs,â John promised.
âDo you even know who sent me the invitation?!â Cordy demanded in turn.â Itâs William Stuart himself!â
âI know.â
âDo you think I would still get to operate a business if I said no to him?â
âThe most important thing for you to do is avoid the spotlight. Youâre drawing too much attention.â
âDo you really think I wonât draw attention even if I did? Iâm an eyesore no matter what I do now, John, and itâs all because of you!â
âI will make it up to you.â
âI donât need that!â Cordy snapped, refusing him.âIâm definitely going to that charity ball in Rocktown. Whateverâs going on between you and Jessica -whether itâs the announcement of your wedding date or a shotgun wedding, it is no skin off my back!â
âCordy, please just listen to me. Donât get impulsive about thisâ¦â
âYou think Iâm going just to upset you? Do you think I want to go at all?! I have to go, and thatâs a fact! If I didnât, Iâd be disrespecting the Stuarts, and William Stuart can use that to coerce Patrick Stuart into cutting me off!â
âYou never should have worked with him.â
âHah!â Cordy snorted coldly-so John knew, but did not care about her situation.
âYouâre the one whoâs saying that Iâm getting too much attention. How much longer do you think Iâd survive without him shielding me?â
âYou shouldnât depend on him,â John told her.
âAnd I have even less reason to depend on you,â Cordy retorted curtly.
âEither way, Iâm not letting you attend the ball next week. HI give you a reasonable explanation when I can,â John simply said, and hung up right then.
He was as stubborn as he was cold.
Cordy put her phone down a little heavily in turn.
She was rarely angry, but John was really driving her out of control.
Still, she ultimately decided to ignore him, and thought nothing of what he said.
That is, until Saturday-when she was ready to leave for Rocktown.
She realized that Johnâs threat was not merely verbal as she opened the door to find Jay standing there, with two burly men in black standing beside him, their visages intimidating.
âWhatâs this?â Cordy asked with a frown, although she had an idea already.
âJohnny sent me,â Jay replied. âDonât blame him-heâs just doing this for your own good.â
âFor my own good?!â Cordy snorted, the rage in her voice uncontrollable while she clenched her knuckles, ready to swing it! âIf he cared, he should respect me instead of coercing me like this!â
Jay stared at her in silence for a while, before slowly saying, âHeâll explain why.â
âI donât need that,â Cordy growled, working hard to calm herself. âPlease let me leave.
Jay.â
âIâm sorry,â Jay replied, his reaction staunch.
His demeanor was different than usual, too.
In the end, a Levine is a Levine-their blood flows with apathy!
