Chapter 49
Love The Game
Averys POV
"Do I have to?" I whined as Sara and I changed in the locker room after practice. I had just asked Sara to prom yesterday and now she wanted to go dress shopping and get our nails done blah blah blah. And it didn't help that we had enough time to do it today. Braddock had let us out of practice almost an hour early so that we could have more time to get this stuff done over the weekend and not next week during practice.
"Come on it'll be fun." Sara said giving me a small smirk.
"Why can't you just take Sophie?" I groaned. Sophie had become a regular in Saras life. It didn't bother me as much now because I knew she was straight, she was even kind of slutty but whatever. None of my business.
"Because she already has a dress. And you need to get a dress too." Sara said matter of factly. I just fumbled with my jeans. Trying to put on jeans post workout is a struggle.
"Why can't I just be a dyke and wear a suit or something?" I said completely kidding.
"Because you're not a dyke and we both know you'd never wear a suit." Sara said closing her locker and facing me with a little smile.
"Come on. If we finish fast we can go to that Chinese place you love so much." She said giving me a small begging look.
"Fine we can go." I said rolling my eyes and closing my own locker.
"Oh and I invited Kara because she needs a dress too." She said as she pulled her back pack on her shoulder and walked away.
"If you can bring someone can I bring Kris?" I called after her.
"Sure. Now hurry up the mall closes at 10." She said walking out of the locker room. I just sighed and watched her ass sway as she walked away. This was going to suck.
I walked to the other side of the locker to find Kris still tying her shoes. As I walked up she looked up at me and said
"No way."
"You don't even know I what was gonna ask." I said pouting.
"Yeah I do. The whole locker room does. You're not very quiet, Ave." she said laughing.
"Come on Saras making me and I know you need to go anyways so come on." I said while adjusting the straps on my backpack. Kris just looked at me and thought it over.
"What makes you think Sara even wants me there?" Kris asked eyeing me.
"She doesn't hate you Kris." I said throwing my hands in the air.
"Come on, you've put me in worse situations. Remember your little intervention with me and Mack at your house? You owe me at least one." I said trying hard not to make it sound like I was holding a grudge for that.
"Okay okay. Follow me home so I can drop off my car." She said in surrender.
"Deal." I exclaimed. I shot my mom a text as to what we were doing and we were off.
âââââââââââââ
After I followed Kris home I had to wait another ten minutes for her to go inside drop her stuff off and then do whatever it is she did then come out. I was getting impatient. I was tempted to just go inside and just eat whatever it was her mom had made, but before I could act on my impulse Kris walked out and got in the car.
"Well it took you long enough." I grumbled
"Calm down. Here peace offering." She said handing me the container of food her mom had obviously packed for me.
"Oh thank god. How'd you know?" I said tearing the lid off to reveal the grilled chicken with green beans.
"You were tailing me the entire way home, and you always get bitchy when you're hungry. Theres no way I was about to go dress shopping with you when you're being bitchy." Kris said handing me the fork she had brought along.
"haha thank youuuuu." I said while stuffing my face.
"Lets just get this over with." Kris laughed.
"Okay fine." I drove off and back to my house where Sara was going to pick us up. When we got back to my house Sara and Kara were already outside waiting for us.
"See I told you you took forever." I said messing with Kris.
"Hey I had to get you food. They'll understand." Kris said waving a finger at me. I pulled into the garage and Kris and I got out.
"What took you guys so long?" Sara asked popping out her hip and putting a hand on it.
"Kris was getting me food." I said cheerily. With that comment we hopped in Saras car and we were off. I let Kara sit in the front seat next to Sara so kris wouldn't feel uncomfortable. I mean we were all on the same team but Kris didn't really hang out with Kara and honestly I didn't really either. Sara and Kara had become better friends somehow. I don't really know when that happened but it did.
The car ride to the mall was long and somewhat quiet. Kara and Sara were talking about stores they wanted to go to and what color dresses they should get and blah blah blah blah. Kris and I were just sitting in the back seat rolling our eyes. At one point I started mimicking Sara and the girly way she was talking with her hands and all that. Kris just laughed but then I heard Sara say
"You know I can see you right?" Sara said cocking an eye brow at me in the rear view mirror. I felt like a kid who got in trouble fighting with their sibling.
"Love you babe." I said as Kara and Kris just laughed. Sara just made a little "mhm" noise. When we finally got to the mall Kris and I just followed Sara and Kara. The first store we went to was Dillards. God I hate this store, and so does Kris. I hate it though because everything is so close together and white. It doesn't make sense but in my head it does.
"This is gonna suck." I whispered to Kris and we looked through dresses.
"Yeah tell me about it." She said as she flipped through dress after dress.
"Hey Ave what do you think of this one?" Sara said pulling out white dress with red flowers on it.
"Its nice." I said. I didn't really like it. It was an off the shoulder dress that was sort of puffy at the bottom.
"Thats a no." Sara laughed putting it back on the rack.
"What about this one?" Kara asked pulling out a a long dark red dress with a halter strap.
"Ooh that ones really pretty. Ollie will love it." Sara said giving her a little wink. Kara just laughed. I just walked back to Kris who was still going through dresses.
"You found one yet?" I asked Kris.
"No." She said still flipping.
"Me neither." I said.
"You haven't even started looking." Kris said giving me a look.
"Well if I wait long enough Sara will probably just pick one out for me. I'm basically killing time until it's time." I smirked.
"Must be nice." Kris said rolling her eyes. I know she didn't want to be here, and anyways Kris probably wouldn't even buy a dress. One of her cousins competed in beauty pageants and had a ton of elegant dresses. She would probably just borrow one from her like she did every year. I looked back at my baby and Kara who were giving the dresses their undivided attention.
"Lets go walk around." I said making sure Sara and Kara weren't paying attention to us. They weren't. Kris and I headed out of Dillards and back towards the main part of the mall.
"Thanks for coming." I said as we passed another girly ass store.
"You're welcome. I know you hate this shit as much as I do." She said
"I hate doing this stuff." Putting my hands in my pocket.
"If it were up to me Sara and I would just go out to eat and then maybe the after party. Just skip the whole dance thing all together, but I know she loves getting dressed up and being shown off." I said pulling my hand out of my pocket to run it through my hair. I had on my jeans from school and an Aerosmith t-shirt on, I prolly looked like a dyke in all honesty.
"You know I'm glad you have Sara." Kris said looking straight ahead and not at me. I just looked at my feet.
"Why do you say that?" I questioned.
"Because she makes you happy, and she pushes you out of your comfort zone. The Avery I knew would have never gotten in a fight or gone to a party. When it was just us you seemed happy for a bit, but now that you have her you're different. And I'm just glad you have her." She said as we made out way over to the cookie stand. I didn't know what to say. But what else is new.
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked
"You're my best friend, and I know I put you through absolute hell, and I'm sorry for that. I've just been thinking about it. That night at the party when Mack took me home she told me what you said to her that day she showed up at my house while you were dropping me off." She said after ordering a chocolate chip cookie and me ordering an oatmeal raison cookie.
"Well I meant it. I just wanted you to be happy." I said. Taking a bite out of my cookie.
"Ave there's something I need to tell you." She said in all seriousness. We sat down at one of the little benches near the cookie shop.
"After the party I slept with Mack." She said taking another bite. "And she wants to take me to the prom."
"Are you going to let her?" I asked not too shocked. Kris was a really smart person book wise, but when it came to common sense she didn't really have it. I kind of figured something like this would happen.
"I don't know. She put me through hell, she put you through hell. I shouldn't let her anywhere near me, but I still love her Ave. I just feel like I can't get over her." She said as we watched some moms pulling their kids into another store.
"Kris you know I love you, and I support whatever you think is best for you. But I hate what she did to you. I don't hate her. I know she hasn't had it easy, but that's not an excuse. I think you nee to tell her no." I took another bite and ran my hand through my hair.
"I know." She said.
"So." I said
"What?" She asked giving me a side eyed look.
"Was the sex any good?" I asked laughing.
"Shut the hell up." Kris answered while shoving me. I almost fell off the bench.
"I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I really don't want to know." I said laughed.
"Well it was going good but I was really drunk and well I kind of passed out." She laughed and so did I.
"Come on lets get back before Sara really gets mad at me." I laughed.
"You should prolly take her a cookie so she won't be as mad." She smiled as we got up from our bench.
"Thats a good idea. I'll take one for Kara too." I said
