Chapter 51

Love The Game

The Saturday of the prom consisted of hair, makeup, and a couple of make-out sessions. I had been at Saras since about 2 o'clock that afternoon. She had already gotten herself ready so she did my hair and make-up. She curled my hair and tied some back in some fancy little twists. Afterwards she did my makeup. Just simple foundation a little contouring and some eyeshadow. It was a sort of gray and silver ashy look Sara said. I don't know. When we finally finished it was already 4 o'clock which was right on time. I had made reservations at this really fancy sushi place for me and Sara to eat at 5:30. Prom didn't start till 7. I didn't actually tell her that I had made the plans. For all she knew we were just going to eat at whataburger before. Once we slipped on our dresses I looked at Sara and just gawked for a minute.

"Stop staring." She said. She was the maroon dress she had picked out and her curls had been straightened.

"I want to kiss you but I know if I mess up your lipstick you'll kill me." I smirked

"You're absolutely right." She smiled back at me. Popping out her hip and putting her hand on it.

After what seemed like a thousand pictures Sara and I got in my car and left for the sushi place. When we got there it was packed with people waiting for a table. When we walked in I could hear a few people whispering about our dresses and prom and whatever. I walked up to the hostess and said "Reservation for Atkinson." At that she lead us to our table. As we sat and ate it felt like our first date again. We were talking about any and everything. I loved going out with Sara. I loved being able to talk to her about everything. It was already 6:30 when we finished eating, which was perfect because it would take us about 45 minutes to get back to the hotel that prom would be held at. Fashionably late.

When we walked into the hotel we were escorted into the ballroom. Before we walked in I stopped to take a breath. This whole ballroom and dance and everything just wasn't me. Stepping onto a court in front of a hundred people and playing a game was easy. Shooting a free throw with everyone on the opposing side booing was easy. This was hard. I don't know why but it was. Sara just stopped and turned around to and look at me and extend her arm.

"Come on. I know you don't like this stuff but its going to be fine. I'll be with you the whole time." She said and smiled at me. I reached for her perfectly manicured hand and walked in with my beautiful date.

As we walked into the ballroom I felt like I was walking into a scene from a Disney movie. The theme this year was light up the night. The whole ceiling was littered with circular lanterns that looked like they hand candles in them and smaller Christmas looking lights connecting the bigger lanterns. There were round tables with white clothes over them and chairs with white clothes over them as well. In the middle of the room was a square dance floor with a Dj set up closest to the wall. There were a people in dresses and tux's everywhere. In one corner of the room they had set up a place to take pictures. The background looked like the scene from tangled. As Sara and I waded through the people we finally found the table that Sophie and some guy, and Ollie and Kara were at. Kristina was there too with a guy that went to west oaks. He was taller than her and it was obvious she was happy about that. There were hardly ever guys that were taller that Kristina. As we made our way over I looked around the room for Kris. When I finally found her she was at a table with some softball people. Kris was friends with a lot of them, I wasn't. We made eye contact for a second and I smiled and waved. When Ollie saw us he got out of his chair to give us a hug.

"You guys look beautiful." He said as he pulled out our chairs for us to sit in.

"Thanks. You guys look amazing." Sara said to everyone. After some small talk we decided to go dance. They were playing every type of music. It went from somewhat rap, to country to Spanish. I was actually having a great time. I wasn't a bad dancer but compared to Sara I looked like it. The way she moved on the dance floor was so sexy and so mesmerizing I couldn't help but watch her. She knew how to dance every song. After a while we made a circle of just our little group. The music was so loud I could feel it in my chest. This was great.

Ollies POV

Kara and I got to the prom sort of early, but I didn't mind. Kara was in a royal blue long dress that was kind of skimpy on top. I think she called it noodle straps or something. Since she was in royal blue I had a matching blue vest that went with my black tux. We looked hot as hell. When we first got there, there weren't too many people but as we sat down and ate more people started showing up.

"So did you want to go to Jakes house for the after party?" I asked Kara as we waited for Avery and Sara, who were definitely going to be late. Avery was never on time. We were sitting with Kristina and this guy she had been talking to from west oaks. Sophie had just walked in with some guy I didn't know.

"He's having like a bon fire thing right?" She asked as she took a sip out of the glass of water they had at every table. I felt like I was at a wedding, but the good kind.

"Yeah it is. I know Avery said that they were probably gonna go." I replied as I adjusted my tie.

"Yeah that sounds like fun. Were you able to get some drinks?" She asked trying to whisper it. I just smiled because I did. My older cousin who was really cool got her some Smirnoff and me some beer.

"Yeah we're all set." I said giving her a thumbs up. After about ten minutes of talking to this guy Kristina was with I didn't like him. I think his name was Jon. He just seemed like an asshole, but that's none of my business. Kara has been complaining about how Kristina has been a shit friend lately. I hate listening to girl drama but being the boyfriend means listening to girl drama. Sophie and her date were here too but they weren't talking much except to each other. If I'm being honest it looked like they had pregamed before this and were going to go at it on the table at any second. At about 7:45ish I saw Sara and Avery walk in. They looked so cute together in our school colors. I wonder if they did that on purpose. Avery looked a little uneasy at first. When they walked up to the table I got out of my chair to give her a hug and to get them settled in.

"So what took you guys so long?" Sophie slurred a bit at Sara. I just gave Kara a look which she returned.

"Ave surprised me by taking me to that expensive sushi place in town. It took us a while to drive back." Sara said giving Avery a really cute smile.

"Yeah and a few other reasons." Avery smirked. Everyone knew they hadn't. Sara wouldn't let her before prom. It would have messed up their hair and makeup. There was no way Sara was going to let Ave mess up what she'd done.

"Shut up Avery. We didn't do anything." She said to everyone as she shoved Ave a bit.

"I'm just kidding geez." Avery laughed. After a while just sitting at the table talking got boring. I was looking around when I heard a George Straight song come on. I looked at Kara and smiled.

"Can I have this dance?" I asked as gentlemanly as possible while I stood up and extended my hand.

"You may." She said as she grabbed my hand and stood up. I saw the rest of the table look at their dates and follow behind us. As I led Kara to the dance floor I couldn't wait to get there. When we did I grabbed her hand and slid my other hand down her back. I pulled her close and we moved as one. The song was 'you look so good in love'. I was slow and I liked it. I was taller than Kara by at least 3 inches. We fit together perfectly. As we moved I couldn't help myself, I sang the lyrics to her and she just smiled at me. Her eyes were sparkling underneath the lantern light. I could have danced all night with her.

After an hour or so of dancing they announced that they were going to do superlatives. Making our way back to the table Sophie and her date we're all over each other still. Kristina and Jon seemed to be doing okay. He had his arm around the back of her chair and he kept whispering things to her that she would laugh at. I didn't see Avery and Sara though.

"Hey where's Ave?" I asked just in general.

"I saw her and Sara go to the bathroom." Kara said to me as we waited for them to announce superlatives.

"Thats going to be a while." I laughed.

As they went through the superlatives Ave and Sara still weren't back. They were announcing the superlative itself, then the girl that won it then the boy. We went through best eyes, most likely to succeed, funniest person. It kind of took a while and all the winners were lined up waiting for it to be over. Then they moved on to 'most outgoing'.

"The most out going girl is Avery Atkinson." Said the announcer. I looked at Kara who just shrugged at me.

"Umm is Avery Atkinson here?" The announcer asked looking around the room just like everyone else.

"Last time for Avery Atkinson?" The announcer said. At that time Avery made her way out of the bathroom with Sara close in tow. The twirly thingys Sara had put in her hair were down and her curls were messy. She had just a smidge of lipstick smeared on the left corner of her mouth, but the way she was walking made it seem like she owned the room, although I know she was super embarrassed. As she made her way up to the dance floor where they were announcing she accepted her sash and waited for them to announce the boy. Sara came back to the table and her cheeks were red.

"Well you look like you had fun." Sophie said as she eyed Saras somewhat messy hair. Sara just gave her a dirty look.

"And the most outgoing boy is Oliver Evans." The announcer said. I looked up in surprise. Kara gave me a high five and I made my way up to get my sash and stand next to Avery. As I took my place next to her she didn't look at me she just said

"Not a word." I just laughed and replied with

"Okay. But fix your lipstick." I wiped my own lip to show her where to wipe. As she did I could see her cheeks turning red.

"You look pretty though." I said feeling bad that she was anxious.

"I'd rather be on a court." She griped. I just laughed. Across the room I could see Kara making faces at me. I wanted to laugh but everyone would see me laughing so I had to try not to, but when I heard Avery laughing we both just burst out laughing. The announcer just gave us a look. We had to stand there until they went through all the superlatives and then the kind and queen. The king and queen were the same stereotype king and queen. Cheerleading captain and the quarterback. When they accepted their crowns we all got to get off the dance floor. Prom was over. Time to party.
