Our Reunion

Caught Up in Between

BECCA

Strangely, when I parked my car near Lily’s house, I was calm and collected. I think listening to one of my favorite bands helped me. Twenty-One Pilots’ music always did the trick to calm my mood, and that’s why I had this playlist with their songs on my iPhone.

I climbed out of the car and was ready to go to the trunk to get my things when the front door opened and Lily rushed outside. She looked sweet and lovely as always with her dark brown hair and brown eyes. She had a ponytail and was wearing jean shorts with a strappy t-shirt.

“Finally!” she exclaimed and hurriedly hugged me tight. “We need to get going, Becca. We are late.”

“Late? What?” My eyes went wide. I was dumbfounded. Lily went to the passenger’s seat of my car and climbed inside. I raised my eyebrow and followed her. “Lily?”

“Becca, we are scheduled to meet with my seamstress about your dress. You told me that you would be here at 2 pm… And with all this stress, I forgot that I agreed to meet with her at 2 pm as well. Thank God that you got here in time, but we need about fifteen minutes to get there. So, drive, please.”

“Okay, at least tell me the address and the directions?” I started the engine and drove off. Lily explained how to get there, and I was driving very confidently. I knew this part of her town well.

“I'm sorry about that, Becca… It’s not how I planned to meet you.”

“I know, Lil. It’s just the stress of the wedding.”

“Uh huh.” Lily took a deep breath and turned to look at me. “Well, I am sure that I need to use this opportunity to talk to you, face to face. I want to know how you are? How is your life in New York? How are Chase and Jenny? What is the job offer you received?”

“I am fine, more or less. I am still getting used to the Big Apple, but with Chase and Jenny by my side, it’s all easier. They both send their congratulations on your big day.”

“Thank you. I am happy that I had a chance to get to know Chase. He is a nice man, and I loved seeing how he cares about you.”

“Jenny is also very nice. She’s like a female version of him, and they are perfect together.”

“Maybe looking at them will give you a push, and you will also want to start a family?”

“For that, I need to have a boyfriend first. But I am single, and while I am still settling in, I don’t want to add any havoc to my life.”

“Relationships are havoc? Nice thought, Becca.”

“Sometimes they are,” Lily shook her head at me.

“Okay, tell me about your job?”

“I will be a junior editor at a small publishing house. But it’s trendy now, and its boss is a genius. He’s 32 years old, and he made a name for himself all on his own. He has a strong personality, and I could learn a lot working with him.”

“Single? Taken?”

“I honestly don’t know. But he has a reputation. He’s not the dating type of guy.”

“Oh… Is he handsome?”

“You could say that.” We were almost there, and I already saw the sign.

“Why do I have a feeling that his description is reminding me of someone we both know?”

“You are all the same. You, Chase, and even Jenny… Yep, he sounds like Drew. Happy?”

“You know, hon, it’s not a good idea to mix your professional and personal life. I am talking from experience. You remember, right? About Tom?”

“Lil, relax! I remember your fling with your boss and how you were forced to quit your job after the breakup. I don’t want anything with Justin Wilson, except to work for him.”

“I was thinking the same.” I started parking my dad’s car.

“Lily, I saw him once. Yes, he is handsome and attractive, but I am not interested in a relationship with that type of man.”

“Yeah, if he sounds like Drew, he might be the type who avoids commitment.”

“Is he still single?”

“Yeah. And I think he is totally okay with that. He’s not in town; he went to Texas for a business deal, but he will be at the wedding.”

“Looks like I will have a little time to spend without worries.” I parked my car, and we both climbed outside.

“I think you’re forgetting that my brother will be there too, and he’s already in town.”

“Then, where are the paparazzi? I thought they were following his every step.”

“Hmmm... You know too much for a person who 'doesn’t give a damn' about Logan.”

“Shut it, Lil.” She caught me, and I became angry. Why didn’t I keep that to myself?

“Relax.” Lily giggled, and we walked inside the shop.

She went straight to a woman in her fifties. She looked very strict, and I became nervous instantly. I think all of us sometimes meet people who scare us for some unknown reason or just make us feel insecure.

“Becca, what are you doing? Come here!”

I shook my head and walked straight to Lily. The seamstress looked at me over her glasses, and I saw a little smile appearing on her lips. Phew, some of the tension I was feeling disappeared.

“Hey, I am Rebecca.” I smiled and waved my palm.

“The infamous maid of honor. I hope you were watching your figure, Rebecca. Lily gave me your measurements four months ago.”

“Let’s see,” I answered and followed her to the changing room. This woman was smaller than me, and still, I felt the power radiating from her. She took a dress, handed it to me, and walked back to Lily.

“If you have a problem, call me.” With that, she closed the curtains, leaving me alone.

The dress was perfect. It was a light violet color, very nice and eye-catching.

I took off my dress and slipped inside the gown. It fit me perfectly, like a glove. It was a strappy maxi dress with a tie at the waist. It highlighted every curve, and my boobs looked delicious in it. I turned around and realized that this dress was fully lined. Damn! I felt so beautiful in it!

“Well?” I said, opening the curtain and saw Lily and the seamstress with big smiles on their faces.

“I told you, Mary. She’s gorgeous! And her body!”

“You were right. This girl looks very promising. She is the best bridesmaid.”

“She’s also my best friend.” Lily winked at me, continuing to smile. This moment was perfect.

“If you don’t mind some advice, I would suggest you do an updo hairstyle. It will show your neck, and your chest will be even more displayed.” Mary came closer and made me turn around.

“I was thinking about a halo braid hairstyle, but I wanted to talk about it with you, Lil.”

“Yeah, I'm sure it will be amazing. I like this new hairstyle, by the way. It suits you. And about makeup, Becca, my makeup artist will be there, and she will do makeup for all of my bridesmaids.”

Lily was looking at me with admiration, and I started to feel my eyes watering. It was wonderful that we were able to stay friends after graduation, and even the distance wasn’t a problem for us.

“Okay, girls. I honestly thought that I would need to make some changes. But it looks like Rebecca, you are the most responsible one.” Mary placed her hand on the small of my back and ushered me back to the changing room. “Lily, all of the dresses will be at your place tomorrow morning.”

“Thank you so much, Mary! Mom said that she would be waiting for you to have coffee or tea, whatever you want.”

“Of course! I don’t want to waste an opportunity to see my godson finally. The last time I saw him, it was winter?”

“Probably. Logan is very busy and…”

“Practices, games, women, partying… I know, Lily.” I was changing while listening to their conversation. Mary wasn’t just the usual seamstress. She was friends with Mrs. Jones and also she was Logan’s godmother.

“I hope he will settle down soon. He is dating one girl now, and she’s very nice. Do you remember the advertisement for my wedding dress? Well, he is dating the model; her name is Teresa.”

“Please, Lily, don’t be ridiculous. Logan and models? That’s nothing serious.”

“Not this time.”

“He told you that?”

“No. But I saw them together.”

“Very convincing.”

I heard some noise. I was trying to change into my dress as slowly as possible. I wasn’t a fan of eavesdropping, but sometimes it was the best opportunity to find out what you want to know.

“Lily, darling, I have worked with people for more than 20 years now. And I am telling you, it’s not in Logan’s nature to be with that kind of girl. It’s just for fun.”

“I don’t know, Mary…” Lily lowered her voice, and I couldn’t make out what she was saying. I sighed and walked outside.

“So? So, where to now?” I said with a fake smile on my lips. Lily glanced at her watch, and I saw her brow furrow.

“Home. We have a few hours for you to settle in and prepare for the party. But we need to get moving, Becca.” Lily started walking to the door.

“Mary, thanks again! For everything. See you tomorrow. But not too early. John and I are having our bachelor and bachelorette parties tonight, and I'm sure we'll be sleeping at least until noon.”

“Duly noted.” Mary chuckled and looked at me again. “It was nice to finally meet you, Rebecca. See you!”

“It was nice to meet you too, Mary. Have a nice day!”

We sat in the car, and I started the engine. Well, the first part of the day went perfectly. Let’s hope that everything goes without a hitch.

“Becca, I talked with my parents and with Kate. You will be staying at our place and John’s parents as well. So it’s no big deal.”

“Kate didn’t want me to come to their place?”

“Well... I won’t lie to you. She would be happy to have you at their house. But her and Tim’s relationship is very rocky right now. You will see it for yourself.”

“Mom told me that Logan argued with Tim because of Kate.”

“Unfortunately. That’s why... Never mind.” Lily cleared her throat. “Let’s go back to our conversation about my brother and the paparazzi. No one knows that he’s already here.

“He and his agent spread the news that he would come home only to be at my wedding. And as the place is secure, everything should be perfect. But most of the time he has spent inside the house, and it’s been two days... So, he’s kind of bored to death. Especially as Drew isn’t in town.”

“What is he doing?” I glanced at Lily.

“Reading. Talking to my parents and me. Watching movies.”

“What about his girlfriend? Is she here with him?” It would be better if I knew about it beforehand.

“No. Not yet.”

“Okay.” I saw their house already. I pursed my lips.

“Today he went with John. They needed to buy something for the party. When I left, they hadn’t returned yet.”

I parked Dad's car and climbed out of it. Lily was waiting on the porch while I retrieved my things from the trunk. I took a deep breath and followed Lily to the front door. Okay, Rebecca, you can do this.
