Unwanted Advances
Caught Up in Between
BECCA
The next morning, I woke up very early, even though I had gone to bed closer to 3 am. Kate and I spent almost two hours just talking. We discussed our hometown, our parents, our plans, and our desires. We also talked about her pregnancy and my possible move to Philadelphia.
Why 'possible'? Because Drew hadn't made me question my feelings for Logan. He made me question the whole foundation of my relationship with him. What if I wouldn't be enough?
I got up, hopped into the shower, and collected my things. Then, I got dressed in my floral summer dress and went to the kitchen. Tim was ready to go to work, so we had a chance to say goodbye to each other.
I was really happy that I had the opportunity to see him again. He was a good man, and I was sure he would be a great dad.
Kate cooked breakfast for me, and I ate it with gratitude. We chatted a little more, and by 11 am, I was already saying goodbye to her. I honestly hoped that everything would be fine with her pregnancy and that she would become a mommy soon.
She wished me luck, kissed my cheek, and stood on the porch waving at me. I waved back at her and started the engine. With a heavy heart, I drove back to my hometown.
During the whole ride, I distracted myself by listening to music. 'It Ain't Me' by Selena Gomez was my companion this time. I put it on repeat and sang at the top of my lungs along with her.
I couldn't erase this thought from my mind, no matter how hard I tried. Logan hadn't called or messaged me. He stayed silent... Well, I probably hurt him with my behavior, but it wasn't a good sign that he hadn't tried to reach me.
When I was almost near my parents' house, my phone started ringing. I instantly felt very nervous; what could I say to him?
But when I glanced at the ID of the caller, I realized that I was worried for nothing. It was the call from Chase. I honestly felt disappointed. I called him back as soon as I parked the car.
âHey, Chase! How are you?â
âHey! I am fine. To prevent your other question, Jenny is also very well. We went to watch a movie for the second evening in a row. Well, we were doing it for a while, before you moved in with us.â
âHaving your own tradition is cute.â
âHow are you, Rebecca? Honestly.â
âI don't know, Chase... Everything is so messed up right now...â
âHow was your meeting with Drew? With Logan?â
âErm⦠Logan and I⦠Can I call you back? I just got back to our hometown, and I see my mom. Sheâs waiting for me on the porch.â Liar. But I had no idea what to tell him.
âOkay.â Chase sighed. âYou know that you can always count on me. I am always there for you.â
âI know. Thank you for checking up on me. Say hi to Jenny from me.â
âSure thing. Bye, Rebecca!â
I ended the call and stared off into the distance. When I looked back at my parentsâ house, I saw my mom standing on the porch. She was waiting for me. I put my best smile on and climbed out of the car.
âMom! How long have you been standing there?â
âLong enough to be able to notice that something is bothering my girl.â
âI am fine, really. Just tired. I didnât get enough sleep last night. I spent it with Kate; we were talking until 3 am.â
âLetâs pretend that I believe you.â Mom turned around and went back into the house. I took my suitcase and followed her. âYour dad is at work right now. He will be home this evening.â
âOkay.â
âMaybe there is something you want to talk about?â Mom stopped near the stairs, placed her hands on her hips, and stared at me.
âNope. I'm good.â I put my foot on the first stair.
âSweetheart, youâre unbelievable⦠Come back downstairs soon. I have lunch prepared for the two of us and a bottle of excellent wine.â
âI'll be down shortly. I need to do something very urgent.â I wanted to write a draft letter to Justin Wilson.
In my room, I took my laptop from the table and nestled comfortably on my bed. Well, letâs get started. In the end, I was able to finish the final draft of the letter after an hour. I typed, then deleted the body of the letter a thousand times. Now, I need to save it, and everything will be okay.
I went downstairs, and my mom instantly pulled me into the living room. She had already placed plates and glasses out for us; now, she went to get the prepared dishes. I sat at the table and took a slice of cheese to plop it into my mouth. The doorbell rang, and I called out to Mom.
âAre you expecting someone?â
âNo. But I told Miley that you would be home tonight. Maybe itâs her.â
âOkay.â
I stood up and walked to the front door. When I opened it, my mouth formed a big âoâ. There was Logan with a bouquet of pink tulips and a bottle of wine in his hands.
He was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. When our eyes locked, my lips instantly stretched into a big happy smile. He came here. To my hometown. For me.
âHey. Youâre here.â
âYeah. Kate told me that you already left when I came to see you.â
âDid you lose your phone?â
âNo. I wanted to surprise you.â
âLoganâ¦â
âRebecca, who is it?â I heard my momâs voice from behind and then her footsteps. She approached me and stopped a few steps back. âOh my God!â
âMom, itâs Logan. Logan Jones. Lilyâs brother.â
âAnd a star quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles. I knowâ¦â For my mom to be speechless in a situation like this? She should be shocked by his sudden appearance on our doorstep.
âOh⦠Where are my manners? Logan, I think we have seen each other a few times, but we never had a chance to be introduced. I am Lydia.â
âItâs nice to meet you, Lydia. This is for you.â He stepped closer and handed the bouquet to her. She took it and smelled the flowers. They were her favorite. I think he asked Kate what he should bring with him. A mental reminder to thank her for that.
âCome inside. We were just going to have lunch.â Logan followed my mom inside the house, dropping a light kiss on my lips on the way. Fuck! I want him all to myself.
Before I closed the door, I looked outside. He came here in his dadâs car. Phew, I didnât have to worry about his expensive car being seen near my parentsâ house.
When I stepped inside the living room, my mom was chatting almost non-stop. She already placed a plate down for Logan, and now she was putting the bouquet in a vase. I came closer and sat on the chair near him. I took his hand in mine and saw him smiling warmly at me.
I was so damn happy right now! We ate a very delicious lasagna and drank the dry red wine that Logan brought with him.
We talked. Mom was bombarding Logan with a massive avalanche of questions about his career, his team members, and even his thoughts on his sisterâs wedding. When I felt my stomach was full, I just sat with a goofy smile on my lips and listened to both of them.
Until my mom decided to be as straightforward as possible. Well, in all honesty, I canât blame her. I talked to her on the phone and hadnât said a word about Logan, not even when I came home today.
âSo⦠Itâs a pleasure to have you here as a guest, Logan. But I am a little confused. What happened between you two at the wedding?â
âLogan and I⦠I donât know⦠We have decided to try to be together. I am planning to move in with him, so⦠I wrote a letter to Mr. Wilson with my explanation as to why I wonât be working for him. All that I need to do is send it.â
âI have a huge house in Philadelphia. Rebecca wonât need anything. She said she wants to find a job. Well, while she will be looking for it, she will live with me, and I will give her everything.â
âThatâs a big step. Living together might be challenging.â
âMom, I had this experience with Cody.â
âAnd you, Logan? Have you lived with someone before Becca?â
âNo. I honestly hadnât met someone with whom I wanted to try. Rebecca is the only one and... I love your daughter, Lydia. I would never hurt her, and I am completely serious about this relationship. I want to make her happy.â
âI hope so, Logan... The way my daughter looks at you worries me.â
âMom!â Why was she like that?
âRebecca, I talked to you before you went to the wedding. I was kind of expecting something like this to happen. Itâs just... I didnât have a chance to see you two together before today and... You both have so much affection toward each other, so itâs easy to notice how strong this bond is between you.â
Mom straightened up her back and stared at both of us. âI hope that you know what you are doing.â
âI know that I want to be with Logan.â I furrowed my brows and stared back at her.
âRebecca, no need to be that hostile toward me. I am your mother. I saw how you were hurt and not once. I want you to be loved and happy more than anyone.â
âI promise you, Lydia. I will do everything for Becca. She will be happy with me.â
Mom was silent for a few minutes. She was just observing us. Then her lips stretched into a smile, and her eyes softened.
âWill you stay for dinner? I'm sure Henry would want to meet you properly.â
âYeah. I will need to go back home tomorrow evening. I'll fly back to Philly.â
âOkay. I hope you like Chinese food because we were going to order it for dinner.â
âI'm up for anything. But your lasagna was a masterpiece. I donât think this food could compete with yours.â My mom stood up and took the plates from the table.
âI'm starting to like you more, Logan.â
With light laughter, she turned around and went to the kitchen, leaving Logan and me alone. I turned to look at him.
âCan we go for a walk?â As soon as I asked, I saw Logan tense. He nodded at me, and we stood up. In a few minutes, we were outside the house.
