Chapter 229
The Love From Vengeance
229: EYES ON HER LUKEâS POV âWhy? Whatâs wrong?â I asked Ariel, giving her a concerned face.
âI spotted Masonâs men heading towards the hospital. We have to leave now before they come and do something terrible,â she answered.
âHold on, those guys followed us here?â
âIâm afraid so,â Ariel replied lowly. She turned to Janice. âJanice, we have to leave.â
âAre they going to kill us, mommy?â
âNo, theyâre not. Weâre going to get out of this one alive.â
I stood up, feeling slight pain, but it was worth it. And by the way, those nurses only made things worse.
âWe better start going.â
Ariel looked at me, concern written all over her face. âAre you sure youâre alright?â
âYes, I am. You donât have to keep on asking me that. Right now, your safety is all that matters. You and your daughter. Our daughter, actually.â
Ariel looked at me, not saying a word, but her cast was not good.
âWhat?â I queried.
âLetâs just go.â She took her eyes off me and held Janiceâs hand.
âBut what about Uncle Andre? Are we going to leave him here?â Janice asked, and Ariel looked at me, waiting for a response. Cause she looked confused herself.
âHeâs unconscious. We have to leave him here in the meantime. Hopefully, those guys wonât find him in his room,â I uttered.
âDonât you think we should just hide ourselves?â Ariel suggested.
âSo they can find us and blow our brains out? Nice suggestion, Ariel. Nice suggestion.â
âHiding ourselves in this buildingâs not a bad idea. Just imagine running from the terror, and youâre shot from behind. How does that sound, huh?â
âThatâs not happening. Weâll be in our quickest mode. Moving really fast. Flash, Quicksilver, Supermanâ¦â
âOkay, weâre not in some superhero universe around here,â Ariel cut me off.
âI know; Iâm just trying to clarify some things. I donât want us to be sluggish in this one.
She shook her head. âSo much for being a fan.â
229 EYES ON HER âI really loved those guys during my childhood.â
âAnd you still love them.â
âMemories, I guess.â I shrugged.
âNo time for jokes right now. Letâs get out of here as soon as possible.â
We all heard a gunshot. Janice quivered, and I held her right away. âItâs okay, little one. Thereâs no need to be scared.â
âAre they coming for us, Daddy?â
âTheyâre not going to harm us, okay?â I assured her with a smile. She nodded, and I ruffled her hair.
I held Janiceâs hand and smiled at Ariel. âWe better leave now.â
âI love how youâre so bold, smiling even though weâre finding ourselves in a tough and difficult situation.â
I grinned at her. âI have you by my side. I shouldnât be afraid, should I?â
Ariel took her gaze downwards, letting out a sigh. âYou know what? Letâs just get out of here.â
I laughed a little, and the three of us left the room. We walked cautiously, looking everywhere, with me leading the way. Stepping further from where we were, we saw two nurses deadâbodies right on the floor.
I could tell Janice was extremely terrified seeing this. I held her tightly, not wanting her to be fully consumed by trepidation.
âThis isnât good one bit,â Ariel uttered slowly, still looking at the dead bodies.
âWe better leave as soon as possible,â I told them.
We fastened our steps, still moving carefully. We heard another gunshot, but that didnât stop us from walking. We were lucky that these men had not sighted us, wherever they may be.
This hospital was actually a large one, and I hoped we wouldnât cross paths with those goodâfor-
nothing folks around here. And I also didnât want them to find Andre. Those guys could be crazy to shoot him in his unconscious state.
We left the hospital with some nurses and patients running around. Traipsing to Arielâs car, we heard the men screaming at us to halt.
âStop right there!â were the words they vocalized. Ariel and Janice wanted to freeze, scared of losing their lives. But I was the one who pushed them to keep moving.
The men shot at us as they began to scamper in our direction. No bullet hit us; we were quite lucky.
The moment we burst into the car, I drove off at full speed, losing track of those idiots.
âThat was close,â Ariel said, trying to catch her breath like she was running a marathon or something 229 EYES ON HER âYeah, but we lost those guys. Iâm not going to let anyone hurt the both of you. Not while Iâm still alive.â
âThanks so much, Daddy. Youâre really a strong man.â
Ariel glanced at Janice right away. âHe told you that?â
âWell, I am strong,â I joked around.
âDonât flatter yourself,â she said, looking through the window.
I sighed deeply and decided to be silent, just focusing on the road. After a while, we arrived at a restaurant.
âSo, whoâs hungry?â I asked loudly, scrutinizing the building.
âMe!â Janice exclaimed, raising her hand.
We made our way into the eatery, took our seats, and made our orders. I smiled, watching Janice as she enjoyed her drink, and so did Ariel. But I could also see some pain in her eyes, and I think I knew what she was thinking, probably about Lukel.
Itâs obvious that she used to spend time with both of them at different restaurants. If only the little kid were here. There would have been intense joy within her heart. It is not being in the darkness. Smiles everywhere with no dull moment.
But the painful thing here is that we sometimes get what we wantâonly some things we wish for come to pass. But we just have to keep living in hope.
âAriel, can I have a moment with you in private?â I asked her âAre you sure about that? I donât think itâs a good idea to leave Janice all by herself.â
âDonât worry about that. Weâll still have our eyes on her. I just want to tell you something really important.â
Ariel looked at Janice. âIs that okay with you?â
âSure! Iâll be fine with these burgers around,â Janice replied, her mouth filling. I raised an eyebrow at Ariel, smirking at her.
I stood up, and she did that as well, following me as we left the building.
Ariel crossed her arms. âOkay, we have to make this quick. What do you want to talk about?â
âDonât be scared, Ariel. We have our eyes on her.â
âYou canât actually tell whatâs going to happen. Someone might come and try to do shit. Oh, God.â
âIs that what you want?â
She gave me a crazy face. âWhat? No!â
229: EYES ON HER âI know that. So, I really need to tell you about my feelings.â
âWeâre still following through with this conversation?â
âYes! You know very well how I love you.â
âNo, I donât.â
âWell, I do. And I want the both of us together again. The three of us, me, you and Janice. We can bring the family back, you know.â
âItâs not going to be that easy.â
âWhy not? You already know the truth. I didnât kill Lukel.â
âYes, I know that.â
âSo, tell me. Why do you think itâs not going to be that easy?â
Ariel looked at me pretty well. âYou really want to know, huh?â
