Chapter 1024
Spoiled by the President
A sense of helplessness overwhelmed Nell as she went after Cathy.
Before leaving, she shared a look with Gideon, indicating that he should take good care of the children and donât make out too much of what her mother said.
Of course, he understood what that look meant. After all, they had been together for so long that he knew her like the back of his hand.
Unfettered, he nodded his head.
Nell then followed Cathy into the garden by the backyard.
With a transparent roof, a greenhouse stood over the garden to protect the plants from excessive heat.
As the air-conditioning was always turned on, the plants grew well and the temperature in the greenhouse was moderately comfortable as well.
They went past the garden and when they entered another room, Cathy turned to face her daughter and said, âHow did you meet Gideon? Why didnât you tell me that heâs divorced with a child?â
Nell could not help but chuckle when she saw how furious her mother looked. She said âMom, itâs not what you think it is. Have a seat and just hear me out first.â
With a tug, she gently pulled her mother towards the sofa as she explained thoroughly about her relationship with Gideon â from the first time they met until they became lovers.
Cathy looked much better after listening to her explanation.
âFrom what you said, it seems like heâs not the kind of person that fools around with girls. Heâs not the irresponsible person that I thought he was.â
Still uncertain about their situation, a crease folded across her forehead. âDid he tell you about this part of his past before? Shouldnât you have asked him more about this? Who is Lizzyâs mother? Do they still see each other now? Do you know anything at all about these?â
Nell kept her silence.
She herself did not know much about Lizzyâs background.
When she initially learned of Lizzyâs existence, she was quite taken aback by it and was reluctant to even try to know her, but that was before Nell got to meet Lizzy.
This changed when Nell finally met Lizzy, and it was love at first sight. As Lizzy eventually became the apple of her eye, she decided to bury the hatchet about Gideonâs past.
Nell felt that Lizzy was both obedient and somewhat pitiful. Moreover, strangely enough, both of them shared a strong bond with one another.
It was a bond that was hard to describe, yet no one could not deny its existence.
In her heart, it did not matter who the childâs real mother was.
The most important thing was that they both liked each other. Ever since Gideon dated her, he had not cast a single glance in another womanâs direction which, to her, was already enough.
Nell let out a sigh as she thought about this.
She knew that her mother only threw a fit because she cared about her. Since Cathy had already taken her as her own, it was understandable for her to be anxious the moment she found out about this.
She could not help but smile. âI donât know the answers to the questions you just asked, Mom, but I do know that Gideon loves me with all his heart.
He would never, ever cheat on me. Thatâs why I decided to let it go and not look into his past.
âBesides, everyone in this world has a past. Before Gideon, wasnât I in a relationship with Jason Morton? Not only didnât he dig into my history with Jason, but he also helped me out with so many things. Shouldnât I at least return him the favor? Shouldnât I bury the hatchet if it makes things happier for both of us?â
Cathy gave a slight frown.
âIt isnât the same.â
She lowered her voice. âYou donât have a child from your past relationship. He does. This is totally different from your case, Nell. What if her mother comes back one day? What will he do? What happens to you?â
She let out a cold smile as she said this.
âThere are two types of men in this world: those who always f*ck up, and those who never do. No man stands in between. Donât fall for his tricks. Men are the best liars. I have fallen for it once, and I hope that you wonât do the same.â
Nell looked at her mother as her gaze darkened.
She suddenly understood why Cathy was angry. She had not been not worried about Nell at all. Rather, there was another reason behind her outburst.
Nell let out a soft laugh.
She took Cathyâs hand once again as she whispered, âDid you think of something, Mom?â
Cathy felt her body stiffened.
Nell looked straight at her mother.
Only after half a second did Cathy nod uncomfortably.
Following that, she saw the light in Cathyâs eyes slowly fade out.
âYes, I did think of the past and I donât want you to make my past mistakes, Nelly. This was also why I became so worked up earlier on. Did you know...â
âMom.â
Nell broke her off abruptly before she could continue.
Her gaze serious, she uttered, âGideon isnât Jason, and Iâm not you. I know youâre just looking out for me, but Iâm completely sure of who I want to live with for the rest of my life. Nobody goes through the same life experience, Mom. Weâre all sculptured in such a way that weâre all uniquely different from one another. As for Lizzy, I really donât care who her mother is. There will always be a spot for her in my heart as my daughter.â
With a sigh, Nell replied gently, âPerhaps you wonât believe what Iâm saying now, but time will always provide us with the best answers. Just be patient, Mom, and let time prove you wrong.â
By now, Cathyâs eyes had already welled up.
âWhat if time really showed you otherwise? Would you regret...â
âI wonât.â
Nell smiled. âLife is a long journey. No one is sure of what would happen next, and no one can guarantee that their next lover will shower them with more love than the previous one. I will never regret my decisions, no matter what the consequences would be. Itâs because I know that at this moment, I love him and Iâm willing to place my full trust in his character.

Cathy was at a loss for words. She did not know how to respond to what Nell had just said.
Though at that moment, she knew that Nell was not her.
The woman before her was smarter, bolder, and much more decisive than she would ever be.
It looked like Cathy was worried over nothing.
Thinking about this, she lifted her hand, smiled, and caressed Nellâs face.
âIâve thought about a lot of things lately, Nelly. Since you were a child, I knew that youâll one day grow up to be the smartest and bravest woman that Iâll ever know. Seeing you transform into her makes me feel so relieved.â
Nell nodded her head and smiled.
âIâm also grateful for a mom like you, Mom. At least I have someone who guides me and protects me from harm.â
All was silent as they stared into each otherâs eyes. A moment drifted past until Cathy lifted her hands to wipe away her tears. She finally gave a laugh. âAlright, since youâve already made up your mind, I wonât pester you about this anymore.â
