Chapter 296
Spoiled by the President
The maid glanced at Jean, then at Nell.
She clearly sensed the tension between the two women but dared not ask a thing.
She merely responded obediently with âYesâ and came over to help Jean.
Jean was fuming with rage as she eyed Nellâs calm and expressionless face. The latterâs words, âIâll be true mistress of the Leithsâ, kept playing in her mind.
She had an uncontrollable urge to pounce on Nell and rip her to shreds!
Still, she took a deep breath and suppressed her fury and displeasure with all her might.
âFine, very ballsy of you to speak to me like that! Well, we shall see! Nell Jennings, let me advise you as well. Wives can be changed at any time, but not aunts!
âIâve watched over Deon ever since he was a child. No matter how much he loves you, his feelings for you are just temporary. Just you wait, your days of glory will be over! One day, Iâll kick you out of the Leith family!â
After that, she held the maidâs hand and stormed off.
Nell found it easier to breathe once Jean was gone.
She looked up and inhaled deeply. It felt as if the anger within her was about to escape from her throat in the next second.
Some time passed before she cooled down.
She turned around and strode outside.
Gideon noticed something wrong with her when she got into the car. He frowned.
He placed the magazine he had been reading aside and asked her, âWhy? What did she say to you?â
âNothing.â
It was not that Nell did not want to tell him what Jean had said but she found it unnecessary.
At any rate, she trusted Gideon. Conveying this to him would not make any difference.
She breathed in and instructed Matthew, âDrive!â
Matthew nodded, started the car, and drove away.
Gideon stared at her intently in silence.
He had good eyesight and a keen and sharp sense of observation, so he could tell that she was hiding her emotions.
The womanâs sullen expression and reddish eyes blatantly revealed that she had been wronged.
No doubt, Jean had said something nasty to her.
Gideon became solemn.
He got out his phone and said, âIâm going to call her now!â
Nell raised her eyebrows and stopped him immediately.
âDonât.â
Gideon furrowed his brows.
Nell paused, calmed herself down and spoke, âShe has never liked me. She thinks that Iâm using this issue to retaliate against her and chase her out of the Leith family.
âThis is a total misunderstanding. If you call her, it doesnât matter what you say. Sheâll only think that Iâm complaining about her to you and picking a bone with her. Doing so will only cause a bigger rift and it wonât solve anything, so thereâs no point in calling her.â
Gideon muttered, âBut youâve been wronged.â
Nell forced out a smile.
âNot really, those who care will say that theyâve been wronged, but those who donât wonât feel a thing.â
As she spoke, she looked out of the window and gazed at the quiet road in the night.
Her words ached Gideonâs heart. He held her hand and pulled her into his arms.
âNelly, Iâm sorry. You were wronged because of me.â
Nell chuckled.
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou donât want to put me in a tight spot between you and Auntie, so you put up with her. But, youâre my wife, Nelly. If youâve been wronged, I feel bad, too. I know that Auntie has a brash temper. It was fine before but if she picks a bone with you, I canât sit on my butt and do nothing.â
Of course, Jean was their elder, but it did not mean that Nell had to suffer in silence.
Nell wrapped her arms around his waist. She felt the pain in her husbandâs words and sighed.
âHonestly, Iâm fine. Donât worry, I just donât want to complicate matters. Plus, it was just a verbal argument. Nobody will dare to trample over me. Your wife is no softie and no one can bully her as they like.â
Gideon agreed with her.
He loosened his grip and kissed her forehead.
âNelly, youâre amazing.â
They returned to Fengqiao Villa.
The next day, Jean left the capital according to the Old Madamâs arrangement.
Gideon ordered Matthew to investigate the stone-betting hall. Indeed, he discovered that the organizer had ties to the Graham family.
Steven Palmer was a pawn sent by the Grahams to manipulate Jean.
In the past, there had never been a feud between the Grahams and the Leiths.
However, in recent years, the Graham family grew in strength and influence. As they said, two tigers could not coexist on the same mountain. The Grahams wanted to maintain their power and fame in the country, so they tried to oppress the Leiths at all costs.
Naturally, the Leiths would not give in.
A few days later, the police shut down Stevenâs entire stone-betting hall on the grounds of fraud and other convictions.
For now, the issue had been settled.
Meanwhile, Janet was about to give birth.
Although Nell had said that she would not be going overseas, she was still worried about her friend.
Aside from the man whom Nell was not familiar with, Janet did not have any other friends or relatives to accompany her.
Fortunately, things turned out better than expected. The delivery was smooth and Janet gave birth to a baby boy who weighed almost three and a half kilos.
Janet named him Sunny and hoped that his future would be as bright as the sun.
As the godmother, Nell was overjoyed too. That day, she made Janet arrange for a video call between her and the baby.
Her heart melted when she saw a cute little dumpling on the screen.
Janet laughed. âIf you love kids so much, why donât you have one with Young Master Leith?â
Nell froze and pondered, then she said, âNo rush for it.â
First of all, she was busy filming and feared that having a child would mess up her work schedule, so she was reluctant to have one with Gideon at the moment.
Secondly, there was Lizzy to consider.
Lizzy was different from other kids. Growing up, she did not have a mother by her side, so she often stuck to Nell when she saw the latter.
She sensed the overwhelming insecurity Lizzy felt and her longing for motherly love.
Thus, she was worried that getting pregnant now might have a huge impact on Lizzy.
Nell heaved a sigh when she thought of this.
She also wondered why Gideon had to use that method last time to keep this child. Did he have a secret relationship?
Still, these were just random thoughts and she would not ask him such questions.
She looked at Janet and asked, âWhen will you come back?â
The fact that Janet gave birth to a son was a secret and the public knew nothing about it.
