Chapter 479
Spoiled by the President
Looking at the lights in a distance, Nellâs thoughts were slightly jumbled.
Noticing that something was off, Gideon asked, âWhatâs wrong? What are you thinking about?â
Nell collected her thoughts, then shook her head and smiled.
âNothing, I was just thinking about how Gale Shelby has sought me out multiple times, just to make me accept my identity as a descendant of the Shelby family, but Iâve refused repeatedly.
âToday, he even brought out that piece of jade and spoke about my fatherâs bequest, yet I still rejected him. That is because I do not want to be related to the Shelby family. Am I being too heartless?â
Gideon regarded her with a strange look.
Nell laughed. âDo you think itâs weird that Iâm thinking like this?â
Gideon did not try to hide it as he nodded honestly.
âYou were very disdainful towards them before, so this is... quite surprising.â
Nell sighed lightly.
She stretched out her hand and stroked her abdomen gently. A soft smile played across her lips.
âIâm surprised at myself too. When this thought emerged in my head, I was wondering if I have been possessed by a saint. Why would I change my mind so drastically?
âAs a father, he caused the death of my biological mother. As a husband, he failed to protect his wife. As a man, he did not fulfill his responsibilities.
âI did blame him before this, and I did not want to admit that my biological father was such a man.
âBut now that I have a child of my own, some of my views have shifted.
âI donât want to be bogged down by things in the past, about who was wrong and who was right. All of that feels burdensome and unimportant now.
âThey are already dead. No matter how others think of them, they will never know. The only ones who are suffering are the ones who are alive, so whatâs the point in that?â
The night breeze blew at her hair, lifting the stray strands around her face. Her petite face looked a little lost and weary amidst the moonlight glow.
Gideon felt his heart clench and a dull pain filled his heart.
He reached out to grab her hand, pulling her into his chest.
Nell had to stop and look up at him.
Gideon was looking at her with an intense expression. His gaze was filled with concern.
âIf I knew that this issue was going to cause you so much distress, I would have protected you and prevented them from finding you forever.â
Nell broke into a chuckle. âWhat is this?â
He maintained a steadfast expression. âAlthough you may sound resolute, I can see that your heart is still wavering. You have, at some point, considered going back to the Shelby family?â
Nell pressed her lips tightly and fell silent.
After a while, she nodded gently.
âGideon, do you know what it feels like to be lonely?â
Gideon felt a pang in his heart as if he was gripped by a giant hand.
He nodded. âI know.â
âIt feels like youâre a floating duckweed, with no origin and nowhere to go to. I used to think that Shaun Jennings was my father, and mum was my mother. Although I hated Shaun Jennings, my thought process was simple.
âLater, I learned that both of them were not my real parents. Even though my mother treats me well and I love her, human beings are just funny that way.
âYou cannot help but wonder, how are your biological parents like? What are their personalities? What do they look like? What have they been through?
âWho are the rest of your relatives? What do they do? Are they well? Do they know you exist?
âIsnât this kind of thinking naïve? Even then, for some unknown reason, I have those thoughts in my head. It seems like there are so many things tangled together in a faraway mist. If I donât take the initiative to go nearer, then those things will forever remain blurry to me.
âWhen my child is born in the future and asks me, who my grandfather and grandmother are, then what will I say?â
Gideon squeezed her hand tightly and hugged her.
In return, Nell stretched out her hands and hugged his slim waist. Her tone was downcast.
âGideon, Iâm a little sad.â
âI know.â
His voice was low and husky as he clasped her waist tightly and pressed her body against his chest.
âDonât be sad. You still have me, grandpa and grandma. You also have Lizzy, and now we have another baby. Everything else is not important.â
Nell held his arm and squeezed it tightly without saying a word.
The night wind blew in between them, emitting a soft whisper.
After a long time, Nell finally let go.
Letting go of him, she raised her head and smiled. âAlright, Iâm fine now! Letâs go home.â
Gideon regarded her with a penetrating gaze.
âOkay.â
He held her hand, and they continued their walk home.
They were not too far from the villa, just about a few hundred meters away. The doctor advised that even though Nell was pregnant, she still needed to do some appropriate exercise. Therefore, Gideon would take a walk with her every night.
After they got home, Nell felt tired, so she quickly fell asleep.
That night, she had the same dream.
She was on that boat again, on the sea. She was shoved into the water, and her body was sinking, sinking, sinking...
Suddenly, Gideon appeared. He supported her waist from bottom-up and pushed her to the surface.
Then, a huge wave crashed over them. She watched helplessly as the tide swept him away and pulled him into the bottomless sea...
Nell suddenly woke up.
It was quiet all around. The house was dark, except for a dimly lit floor lamp in the corner.
She closed her eyes and let out a sigh of relief.
Turning to look at the wall, she saw that it was late into the night. The clock on the wall pointed to 12:00 am.
She did not know how long she had been sleeping. All she could hear was the wind whistling outside. Beside her, the man was not fully lying down.
His body was leaning sideways against the headrest and his eyes were just barely shut. The dim light cast a shadow on his handsome face, highlighting his facial features even more.
Nell raised her hand to wake him, but before her fingers made contact with his body, her gaze landed on his slightly frowning eyebrows.
His appearance was naturally rugged and handsome, but that frown still made her pause.
His eyelashes were very long, not just long but thick too, and they cast a faint shadow on the underside of his eyes.
Other than that, there were faint dark circles around his eyes. It seemed like he had not been sleeping well.
Nell thought carefully. Lately, he had been busy with various matters. Just after sending off his maternal grandfather, he was busy with the wedding preparations. It must have been tiring.
So, the hand that intended to wake him faltered. Nell got up gently, wanting to pour herself a glass of water.
However, no matter how careful she was, the dozing man immediately opened his eyes when she moved.
He had clearly fallen asleep, but the moment he awoke, his eyes were fully alert. There was no hint of sleepiness in them.
The constant vigilance he had cultivated over the years allowed him to stay alert at all times. Even when he had fallen asleep, he could regain full consciousness within a second of waking up.
âYouâre awake?â
