Chapter 671
Spoiled by the President
She did not imagine that their relationship would be such.
Spencer did not sit with them. Perhaps, he felt that it was inappropriate for a man like him to sit with the two ladies, or that there were no common topics of conversation between them.
Regardless, when they sat down, he ordered a cold drink and sat by himself.
At first, Lucy thought that it was weird, but seeing that Emilia did not seem to care, she did not probe.
Lucy looked at Emilia with slightly concerned brows. âDoes Aunt Foster know that you are back this time around?â
Emilia was surprised as if she did not expect Lucy to ask that question. Perhaps, she had not considered the question, but after a pause, she replied, âI donât think so.â
If her sister knew, she would resent her.
She had promised her sister to stay away from this city and from that person, never to come back again. However, she broke her promise and failed to keep her word. Twenty years later, she was back here again.
âSister, if you found out that Iâm here, will you hate me?â As she thought about that, a troubled expression appeared on Emiliaâs face.
Lucy did not know what to say for some time. She had an inkling that the relationship between Emilia and Natalie was not as simple as being unrelated sisters.
After all, if there were only sisters, why did Xavier secretly keep her photo in a book?
Wasnât that strange?
Based on a womanâs intuition, Lucy had a vague suspicion in her heart, but she dared not believe that it was true.
In terms of conscience, it was true that Natalie opposed Lucyâs relationship with Joel, causing a lot of trouble for the two of them, and also hurting Lucyâs self-esteem countless times before.
Nevertheless, Lucy did not hate Natalie because although that woman appeared to be quite mean, she was not entirely evil.
If she was truly cruel, she could have used a hundred different methods to stop Lucy and Joel from getting together.
However, Natalie did not do that. Perhaps, besides the compassion in her heart, she also considered the mother-son bond with Joel, hence she did not want to exacerbate the situation to the point of no return.
With that thought in mind, Lucy raised her head to look at Emilia with an assessing gaze. âI believe that Aunt Foster will be very happy to know that youâre back.â
Emilia was slightly startled. Her face paled, followed by a panicked reaction. Wrinkling her forehead, her tone towards Lucy was almost pleading as she said, âMiss Katz, I need a favor from you, please?â
She even used honorifics, which showed the urgency in her heart.
Lucy did not agree immediately. She asked, âWhatâs the matter?â
âPlease donât mention the fact that youâve seen me in the capital, and that Iâve come back to my sister.â
Astonished, Lucy frowned reflexively.
âWhy?â she asked before she could stop herself.
Emilia pursed her lips and did not reply.
The atmosphere plunged into a heavy silence.
After a long pause, she spoke up, âA long time ago, I did something very wrong to her. I should have been put to death, but she forgave me and rescued me from the gates of hell. When I left the capital, I promised her that I wonât come back to this land for the rest of my life.
âI donât want her to be worried or think that Iâm breaking my promise, so Miss Katz, can you please keep this secret on my behalf?â
Lucy stared at her. At this moment, she knew for sure that the relationship between Emilia and Natalie was not as simple as that.
Once again, Lucy did not promise her outright. She asked, âBut you did, in fact, break your promise, didnât you?â
Emilia paused. Then, she smiled desolately. âYeah, I broke my promise.â
As she spoke, her head hung low. She gently smoothed out a tiny wrinkle on her dress.
Lucy suddenly realized that it was now June or July, which meant sweltering hot weather outside. Even with the air-conditioning on full blast inside the mall, it was not really cold.
Normal people were dressed in short-sleeved t-shirts, but Emilia was wearing a long-sleeved dress with a thin sweater on the outside.
Her outfit was quite strange given the season. Lucy had a vague guess in her mind, but she had no way to verify it.
Finally, she declared helplessly, âI can only promise not to voluntarily mention you to her, but if she asks me directly, then Iâm sorry as I wonât be able to lie.â
Actually, Lucy also had her personal agenda in mind.
Although she did not know what had happened between Emilia and Natalie, based on what Emilia mentioned earlier, Natalie had ordered her not to come back here many years ago. This meant that there must be a big entanglement between the two of them.
As Joelâs wife, regardless of whether or not Natalie approved of her, she could not risk lying to her. In addition to that, she did not want to appear as if she was standing on Emiliaâs side. This would further complicate their mother-daughter-in-law relationship. Her actions were for her own sake.
More importantly, she knew that on the surface, Joel pretended not to care about his motherâs opinions, but in reality, Natalie occupied a very important position in his heart.
Neither did she want Joel to be caught between his mother and his wife, nor did she want to drive a wedge between mother and son.
Thinking along these lines, Lucy drew a long breath. âIâm really sorry, Sister Jareau, but this is as much as I can promise you. If you...â
âThatâs enough,â Emilia interrupted her rambling. Then, she raised her head and regarded Lucy with a grateful expression.
âMiss Katz, I understand your position. My request wasnât very reasonable in the first place, so Iâm already grateful that you are willing to promise me this much. Really.â
Lucy breathed a sigh of relief. On one hand, she did not want to lie to Natalie, but on the other, how could she harm Emilia?
No matter what happened back then, Lucy knew that this lady in front of her was a gentle and kind soul that treated everyone benevolently like an angel. Since she really liked Emilia, she did not want to cause her any trouble.
Perhaps, the best outcome, although none of them said it aloud, was for them to never meet each other again.
With that in mind, Lucy raised her wrist and glanced at the time. She said, âItâs getting late, Sister Jareau. Do you still want to walk around?â
Emilia lowered her head and coughed softly. Spencer immediately strode over to their table and supported her shoulders with his hands. He said, âItâs getting late. You should go back.â
