Chapter 41
Back to the Past: Breaking the Love Spell
Gordon and Hildaâignored Maria. But Maria went overboard and continued, âYouâre an entire family of
idiots. We decided to have this celebration only after checking her scores.
âYou donât even know whether Carlisle got into college. Yet, you had the guts to hold a college entrance
celebration? Are you trying to become a laughing stock?â
At the same time, Gerard looked on in disdain. Did they want to compete with him? What did they have
that they could use to compete with him?
Other than the fact that Hilda was prettier than Maria, Gordon had nothing else. Carlisle was useless,
just like his own father. Would he even be able to break the mold?
Just then, Rainville Hotelâs manager walked over. In a polite voice, he prompted, âMr. Zahn, the party is
about to begin. Please make your way upstairs!â

Gerard adjusted his necktie, put his hands behind his back, and followed the manager upstairs.
Around half an hour passed. The atmosphere in front of Sunago Restaurant became livelier.
Gordon was giving their guests a warm welcome.
âMr. Moore, I didnât think that you would come!â
Gordon was beaming as he handed a cigarette to an old man who looked over 50.
He was Fletcher Moore, head of Helios Village, Gordonâs hometown.
âHow did your son score on the test, Gordon?â Fletcher casually asked as he accepted the cigarette
from
Gordon.
âCarlisle has just left school. I havenât asked what his score is. But he did say that he got into Riverland
University!â
Gordon took out a lighter and lit Fletcherâs cigarette for him.
âYouâre believing him just like that? That brat wouldnât lie to you, would he?â
Fletcher took a puff of his cigarette. His every word hinted at his distrust of Carlisle.
âMr. Moore, Iâm sure that youâre aware of the hard work that Carlisle has put in this past month. He did
his
revisions from dawn till duskâ¦
âAlright,â Fletcher interrupted Gordon. Then, he took out 20 dollars from his pocket and handed it to
him.
âYouâve invited me anyway. As head of the village, I will show you respect. Hereâs some congratulatory
money. Iâm giving it to you regardless of whether Carlisle got into college or not!â
The smile froze on Gordonâs face. Although he wasnât very educated, he could read between the lines
of what Fletcher had just said.
Fletcher was under the impression that Gordon held this party just so he wouldnât embarrass himself.
Did
he think that he wanted to cheat others of their money?
âTake your money back, Fletcher. We donât want it!â Hilda pushed Fletcherâs hand away.
âDespite your incapabilities, I see youâve quite the temper, Hilda!â Fletcher scoffed. Then, he stuffed the
20 dollars back into his pocket.
Hilda responded in a cold voice. âWho says that I canât lose my temper? Itâs true that we havenât earned
much money all these years. But that doesnât mean weâd let just about anyone shame us!â
Fletcher was about to argue back when a few bikesâstopped by the roadside suddenly. They were
Carlisle,
Sean, and a few of Carlisleâs classmates.
âMom, Dad, what are you arguing about?â
Carlisle had heard Hilda from a ways away. He had a pretty good guess once he spotted Fletcher.
He parked his bike by the side of the road. Then, he handed the envelope to Gordon. âHere is my score
report, Dad!â
Gordon was stunned to see the envelope that Carlisle was handing over to him. For some reason, it
made
him feel nervous.
Then, more of Carlisleâs classmates arrived.
Upon witnessing this, Fletcher felt a sense of foreboding. Could it be that Carlisle had really qualified
for college?
With shaky hands, Gordon took the envelope. He opened it carefully and pulled out the thin transcript
slip
from within.
1400 points.
Gordon widened his eyes and held his breath.
Hilda went over and took a peek. She also gaped in shock.
Fletcher observed both their facial expressions. Then, his gaze narrowed.
By the looks of it, Carlisle had really gotten into college. He just didnât know how much Carlisle scored
on
the exam.
âWell done, my son.â
Hildaâs eyes turned red. Tears kept streaming down her face. She gave Carlisle a big hug.
He scored 1400 points!
