Chapter 32

☾ 32: Werewolf Realm ☾

Azure

The next day Mason, Laine, and I walked through the portal to the werewolf world.

"Cassy you have to talk to me eventually," Mason said as we entered the new world.

"Actually, I don't. I don't need to talk to either of you." I replied.

"What did Laine do?" He asked.

"Ask her girlfriend," I said as I rolled my eyes.

"Heather is not my girlfriend," Laine said.

"Oh really?" I turned to her. "So you two didn't go on a date? In that case, I assume no kiss was involved?"

Laine remained quiet.

"Exactly." I continued.

"It didn't-... I don't like her in that way." She tried reasoning.

I looked over at her for a minute and then turned to continue walking.

"Cassy, wait up. In case you forgot, you need me to get to your mom's." Mason said.

"Oh, so you can lie about where she lives too?"

"For the hundredth time, she told me to lie!" He sighed.

I ignored him as I continued walking.

Once we arrived my mother was patiently waiting as we walked in.

I exchanged greetings with her and expressed my anger at all the lies. She understood saying it wasn't the best idea but the only one she could think of at the moment. She apologized profusely promising never to do so again.

"Mason, why don't you take Laine to Cassy's room? Let me and Cassy talk alone for a moment." My mother said.

"Why my room?" I asked.

I knew there was nothing in it considering I haven't even been there myself. Still, it was an odd thought to have her wait in my room.

My mom shot me a look I could only assume was the look kids feared from their parents. I didn't say anything else because if I'm being honest it looked terrifying.

As soon as Mason and Laine left, my mom began explaining a few things to me.

"I heard about the attack at your father's. I'm sure you're curious as to why they wanted you dead. Your father and I have been hoping you would be the key to binding our two worlds together as one. Somehow, word of our plans got out and many free angry saying that it was wrong for us to have had you, much less in secret."

"How exactly am I supposed to bring vampires and werewolves together? Haven't the two been fighting for centuries?"

"Your father and I are working on that but the main priority now is to keep you safe." She replied.

I didn't even know what to say at this point so she changed the subject.

"Your dad also told me about your developing feelings for-."

My eyes widened.

"Woah! Hold on! I know you're my mom and all but you're also kind of a stranger right now but either way my... Uh... private... life is private."

It's just way too soon and too weird to talk about with anyone much less parents you've barely met.

"Alright, I understand. Just know I'm here if you need me." She smiled and looked as though she was trying not to laugh.

"Thanks... Can I go now? To my room?" She signaled to the door and I made my way over.

I opened the door to see Mason and Laine pause their conversation.

"I should go talk to your mom," Mason said as he walked out.

"You can go too," I told Laine.

"Not until we talk." She said as she patted the spot next to her on the bed.

"I'll stand, thanks. Just talk."

She sighed. "Heather and I aren't dating."

"Oh really?"

"Yes, she had told me about her dad..."

I looked down remembering what I had nearly done.

"As a true friend I wanted to comfort her especially knowing it was your doing. She ended up confessing she had liked me for years and wanted to take me out on a date. I was surprised, to say the least, and she kept talking about how she only wanted the best for me and she felt she could provide that. It was kind of weird the way she worded some things but I decided to give her a chance especially since whatever was happening between us was on hold."

"And you're not together after that?" I asked finally looking up.

"The date was great and she did kiss me but... all I could think about was you the whole time. I realized now how much of a fool I was to hold onto the hope of us as it looks like you got over me easily..."

"Laine I didn't-."

"Let's just not talk about it. It's fine! I just don't want things to be weird between us... So are we cool?"

"Yeah..."

I couldn't help but feel a bit bad.

My mom suddenly popped into the room.

"Okay, girls it's getting late! Honey, I hope you don't mind if Laine stays in your room tonight. I can bring an extra pillow and blanket if-."

"It's fine," I said dismissively.

"Oh... but I thought-."

My eyes widened again. "Mom! I said it's fine!"

"Alright alright! If you two hear any noises it's just a few guards I have on patrol. Have a goodnight." She said and shut the door.

Of course, I had to end up with parents who find it their sole mission to embarrass me. Don't get me wrong though I do kind of like this level of normality.

"Are you sure you want me to sleep here? I mean what about-."

"It's fine. Katherine's not my girlfriend." I said hopping into bed.

At least I didn't think she was. Damn, I'm awful at relationships.

I could tell Laine wanted to comment but she didn't. Instead, she simply got under the covers as well.

I tried falling asleep but it was impossible. The sound of Laine's pulse pounded in my ears reminding me I haven't had any blood today. I soon felt my eyes turn red.

I got up quickly and walked over to the window trying to clear my mind.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

"Yeah... I'm just thirsty.."

There were countless animals on this planet. It won't help the cravings much but any bit counts.

"Drink from me." I turned around and looked at Laine who was comfortably sitting on the bed.

"What?! No! Don't be ridiculous! There are plenty of animals around here."

"Cassy I'm not stupid. I know that's not going to help much." She held her arm out to me. "I don't mind. I know you won't kill me."

"Laine, I'm not drinking from your arm."

"Oh? Do you prefer from the neck?" She said as she brushed away her hair to reveal her neck.

I didn't fail to hear the slight playfulness in her voice.

"What? No!" I said slightly embarrassed.

Laine rolled her eyes and looked around the room. She reached over, spotting a jagged piece of wood on the nightstand, and cut her arm along it. The scent of blood hit my nose and before I knew it I was sitting in front of her.

She held her hand out again. "Here."

"Laine are you sure? It might hurt-."

"I'm sure." I took her hand gently and looked up at her.

She rolled her eyes with a hint of a smile. "Quit being so dramatic and hurry up!"

"Fine!" I yelled as I bit into her arm.

She had a blood type different from what I normally drank. It was amazing. When I felt a little squirm from her hand I stopped.

"Sorry. Too much?" I asked.

"Oh no! I'm fine." She examined the bite mark as I wiped my mouth.

"Your blood is amazing by the way," I said randomly.

"Um, good to know?" She laughed.

"I'm serious. It must be rare or something." I bit into my arm and held it out to her.

"What are you doing?"

"It will heal you faster," I stated.

Her eyes widened. "I think I'll pass I'd rather not drink blood."

I pondered for a moment. Maybe she didn't have to drink it? If my blood could heal who says it has to be consumed for it to take effect?

With that in mind, I held my arm over her bite and let my blood drop onto it. Slowly her wound began to close up as it healed right up.

"Cool," Laine said in amazement.

I was realizing now that I may have had a bit too much of her blood for two reasons. One, I was feeling a bit like I had too much alcohol. Two, I wanted more. At the party, it took a couple of people before I began feeling this way, this time it only took a few sips. That must have been due to me not having much blood the day before.

"Cassy?" Laine questioned.

"Um, Laine... So usually when a vampire has some blood they kind of get a high from it..." My eyes traveled to her neck.

"Okay?"

"I don't know why... I only had a sip... but the thirst is only growing."

"Um, Cassy...?"

I need to snap out of it but the more I think about it the more my mind becomes fuzzy.

"Just one more sip?" I asked.

I can stop. I'll have to stop.

"I-I guess?" She replied nervously.

I was only an inch away from her neck when my canines came out. I looked around trying to find a distraction before my teeth made contact.

Then it came to me.

I pushed Laine down onto the bed and looked at her. Her eyes told me just how confused she was but she was also shocked.

I looked at her up and down taking in our position as my heart raced. Soon enough I noticed my fangs were gone.

Before I got up I took another look at Laine's face. She always managed to look gorgeous and as I stared into her eyes all our moments together rushed through my mind.

"Cassy?"

I snapped back to reality at the sound of her voice.

"Sorry... It was the only way to distract myself from draining you." I said as I sat up.

"It's fine... You didn't hear what I said?" She questioned as she sat up as well.

"You said something? What was it?"

She smiled softly. "Don't worry about it. I'm kind of glad you didn't hear."

"What? You can't leave me in suspense!" I said as we both got under the covers to sleep.

"Would you mind if I do something a little selfish?" She asked.

"What do you-?"

Her lips connecting with mine interrupted my words. It came just as fast as it went. She turned around her back to me and left me speechless. As sweet as that kiss was, I couldn't help but think about Katherine.
