CH 63
101st Confession
<CHAPTERÂ 63
âYes. Sheâs getting engaged. Itâs not finalized yet, butâ¦â¦.â
Herwin trailed off, but that wasnât what mattered to Henry right now.
âIf she hadnât told me today, I wouldnât have known anything and I would have watched her get engaged to another man! What the hell do you think youâre doing?â
Herwin remembered Henryâs fondness for Lucia since they were children.
âYou canât be serious, you still like Lucia?â
âYes, I do, sheâs like family to me!â
Henryâs feelings for Lucia were not rational.
In response, Herwin let out a small sigh of relief.
âWhat are you doing now, arenât you going to catch her?â
But the next words made him look up from his downcast gaze.
âYouâre going to let her go to another man, maybe even get married, and youâre going to stand by and let that happen?â
ââ¦â¦What are you talking about?â
âWhat do you mean, get out of here andâ¦â¦!â
Henry stopped shouting when he saw Herwinâs bewildered expression.
Then he remembered what Lucia had said.
âHerwin doesnât like me.â
Slowly a look of horror crossed Henryâs face, then he looked down at Herwin with contempt.
ââ¦â¦. You donât like her?â
Herwin stiffened and avoided Henryâs gaze.
âI⦠have someone else I like.â
Throbbing-
Even though Herwin spat it out, his chest felt heavy for some reason. The dull ache in his chest made him wonder.
It was the first time Henry ever heard the word âlikeâ come out of his mouth.
Henryâs face hardened.
âCome to think of it, you never said you liked my sisterâ¦â¦.â
Henry said in a low voice. Yes, Herwin had never said he liked Lucia.
But when they were together, it was plain to see that they were interested in each other, even if they didnât say so. So-
âWhy did I give up on my sisterâ¦â¦.â
Dejection followed by anger. Henry clenched his fists until his knuckles were white.
âYou didnât say that in front of Lucia, did you?â
When Herwin failed to meet his eyes, Henry realized he was right.
Henry chuckled and stared at Herwin with cold, sunken eyes.
âYou donât know what made me give up on my sister, do you?â
Herwin slowly raised his head.
âIâve been fond of her ever since I was a little kid, but I gave her up because I thought you and Lucia liked each other, and youâre not a waste to me⦠but it was all for nothing.â
âYou donât like Luciaâ¦â¦.â
âYeah, I was going to give up, but now I donât have to. You can be happy with that girl you say you like for the rest of your life. Iâll never see my sister engaged to another man.â
Henryâs eyes narrowed as he spoke.
âI thought you said you didnât like her.â
A faint sense of despair settled on Herwinâs face.
How could that face be that of a mere friend; it was the face of a man who had been robbed of his favorite person.
Even though his feelings were visible on his face, he didnât seem to realize it.
âPhew, let him suffer alone.â
The wagon has left. He would have to deal with what happened next on his own.
As Henry was about to leave a confused Herwin behind, he remembered something.
âDoes our parents know about my sisterâs engagement?â
âNo.â
âNo wonder. They wouldnât be here if they did.â
Henry shook his head in disbelief.
They had been waiting for news of his and Luciaâs engagement ever since Herwin graduated from the Academy.
âIf they know the story, theyâll turn it upside down.â
He winced at the thought of his parents traveling down to the capital in a month.
When Henry left, Herwin ran a hand through his hair.
âWhat the hell am I supposed to doâ¦â¦.â
Should he ask Lucia to be engaged to him?
ââ¦â¦. You donât like her?â
Yes, he doesnât like Lucia. Itâs Arista he likes.
âYouâre not going to marry me.â
If he rushes into marrying her when he doesnât even like her, Lucia will see right through him and pull away from him.
The thought of Lucia no longer seeing him made his heart grow heavy.
He felt like he was walking through a labyrinth with no way out. He had no idea what to do about this.
Eventually, Herwin buried his face in his hands and closed his eyes. He felt like he had been left in a pitch-black place.
* * *
âHaha⦠Mom, how long are we going to have to do this?â
âOh, dear, weâre just getting started, donât be so weak, go grab some other clothes here.â
âYes, please wait a moment.â
Arista shook her head when she saw her mother, who was more excited than she was about picking out her clothes.
Sheâs been in a bit of a funk lately, so sheâs been stuck in the rehearsal hall, and when her mother tells her with tears in her eyes that even if she has a daughter, she feels like she doesnât have a daughter, eventually, Arista was forced out by her.
Weakened by her motherâs tears, she decided to stay and do as she wished for just this one day, but she soon regretted it.
Arista, who had already changed five or six outfits, looked at her mother, whose eyes were shining brightly with a fat face.
âMy God, you look so beautiful, my darling, I donât know whose daughter you are, you look like an angel.â
âYou said that just a moment ago.â
âHo-ho-ho, did I? Ah! Arista, you should try this on. I think it would look great on you.â
Aristaâs face turned white as she looked at the endless rows of clothes on the rack. Arista slowly backed away, making an excuse.
âI just need to use the restroom.â
âOkay. You should hurry.â
The Duchess could only smile. With the frightening implication that she wouldnât let her escape, of course.
At the thought of running away, Arista narrowed her shoulders and savored the little bit of breathing room.
âHa. What time is it?â
Sheâd only been here for half an hour. Shopping with her mother was a standard two hours. Arista sighed heavily as she realized she had a lot of miserable hours ahead of her.
ââ¦â¦ Letâs go to the restroom first.â
Arista limped to the restroom. Moving as slowly as possible, Aristaâs ears perked up when she heard a familiar voice.
âSo, honey, youâre saying that Viscountess Romario used to be in a relationship with him?â
âShe was, Iâm sure. It was something that anyone who knew would know.â
The voice, deliberately thin, belonged to Becky, Lucasâ lover.
Wondering if Lucas was there, Arista turned and headed toward the source of the voice.
âHmph, thatâs right, thank you, sweetheart, youâre the only one.â
âIf youâre so grateful⦠how about tonight?â
âUgh, you too. You canât say that here.â
Arista frowned at the obscene conversation. Suddenly, she noticed something strange.
The voice of the person talking to Becky was very unfamiliar. Even if Lucas was faking his voice, it didnât have the same tone.
âNo wayâ¦.â¦â
Arista frowned and entered the room where the voice came from.
Becky, who had sent her a fierce glare from Lucasâ arms, was now giggling in a strangerâs arms.
Arista froze, not quite comprehending the current situation.
Realizing that a person was standing in the doorway, Becky quickly turned her head.
When she spotted Arista, Becky stiffened. Meanwhile, the man with her looked her up and down and cleared his throat.
âHmmm, thereâs someone.â
âOh, Iâm sorry. I must have the wrong room.â
âNo, thatâs okay, I can direct you if youâre lostâ¦â¦.â
The man gave her a snake-like stare, and Arista stiffened, looking down at the two of them arrogantly.
âNever mind. It looks like youâre having a good time, and I apologize for interrupting.â
As Arista walked away, the man chuckled hollowly.
âPretty face, but no personality. Of course, we both know youâre prettier.â
Becky, who had been staring at the spot where Arista had left, snapped to attention.
âHuh? Uh-huh, yeah, Iâm prettier.â
âAnything else?â
âNope. Thatâs enough. Thanks.â
Confused, Becky quickly regained her composure. The man touched her gently on the waist and whispered.
âIf you ever need my help, let me know, but what the hell does Agnes want to know?â
âHe wants to know what itâs like to have her sister betrothed to the Marquis of Casper.â
âHmph, I see, in that case, I can understand why heâd want to find out.â
As he now insisted on playing with her, Becky smiled seductively and clung to his neck.
Even as she did so, her mind wandered to Arista, whom sheâd seen earlier.
âYouâre not talking to Lucas, are you?â
No, sheâd only seen her once before, so she might not remember her.
The way she didnât falter when she saw her, it was clear she didnât remember her.
Relieved that Arista didnât recognize her, Becky quickly put her out of her mind.
* * *
ââ¦â¦Thatâs all the information I have.â
A few days after Aristaâs encounter, Becky went to Lucasâ office and told him what she had learned.
As he listened, Lucasâ face grew harder and harder, and he looked angrier than Becky had ever seen him before.
Feeling a chill run down her spine, Becky gently took his hand.
âBaby, are you angry?â
âHuh? Noâ¦just a little freaked out. Thanks, Becky. I never would have figured it out if it wasnât for you.â
âNo, youâre welcome.â
Lucas planted a quick kiss on her cheek, and Becky smiled softly.
âSo, what are you going to do now, tell your sister?â
âOf course, Iâm sure she doesnât know about this, but I need to tell her right away, or at least break off the engagementâ¦â¦.â
Becky smirked at the mumbling Lucas.
âI thought they said he was an idiot.â
Sheâd heard the rumors about Lucas before they met.
She was a little worried because heâs such a family man, but heâs pretty nice.
She doesnât understand why heâs been dumped by women.
She thought it was stupid that women would fall for someone who supported and loved them unconditionally.
âWhere do you get a man like this?â
The next countess is the one who has won, and a man who loves her as if he would give her everything, will not be easily found anywhere.
Of course, meeting another man was another matter.
She couldnât control her infidelity in the first place. She never thought she could look at and love only one person.
âYou just have to hide it well.â
It would be better for Lucas than if the whole truth came out.
âBrother, are you in there?â
There was a knock on the door and Arista appeared. Becky, who was smiling in triumph, shuddered when she saw Arista.
So did Arista, who was about to enter. After a brief pause, Arista quickly looked away.
âArista, what are you doing here?â
âI need to run a quick errand. Can you take a look at this?â
âUm, let me seeâ¦â¦.â
As Lucas looked over the documents Arista handed him, Becky pursed her lips and hid her anxiety.
âWill she recognize me?â
Nervous, Becky couldnât take her eyes off Arista, but Arista didnât give her the slightest glance.
âIâll take care of this. Thanks.â
âOkay, okay. Iâll leave you to it.â
âOkay, bye.â
Contrary to what she feared, Arista didnât talk about what happened that day.
âMaybe she doesnât remember â¦.â¦â
Becky breathed a sigh of relief that she didnât recognize her.
âBecky, are you okay? You donât look so good.â
âYeah, Iâm fine! When are you going to finish your work?â
âUmm⦠itâs going to take me a little while, so just wait a little while, and Iâll be done.â
âReally? Iâll trust you then!â
Chirp.
Arista glanced at the closed door as she listened to the laughter coming from the office.
After a long, cold stare, Arista scoffed and walked away.
