Chapter Nineteen
Forever Yours
I was nervous and I just wanted the ground to swallow me whole.
I was fully dressed, my makeup done by Funke, my hair let down in all it's curly glory. As I stared at myself in the full length mirror of my room, I wished that it was all a dream and that I would wake up in Andrew's arms and we'd laugh about the silly dream I had.
I still miss Andrew, so fucking much and every hour we spend apart, I'm reminded that things are never going back to the way they were, this was my life now and I had to deal with it.
Miles was running a bit late, he was supposed to be here five minutes ago and every minute he isn't here makes me want to change my mind about the dinner.
I'm scared to meet his family officially. A lot of questions have been running through my mind ever since. Questions like 'what if they don't like me?' or 'what if I mess up?'
I just don't want to fuck things up. Even if they aren't the in-laws I always dreamt about but they are my in-laws to be and the last thing I need is for them to not like me. I like to have peace in my life and one way is to be at good terms with Miles' family.
"Riya, Miles is here," Funke said as she peeped into my room, her head the only thing I could see.
I nodded, breaking my train of thought. I looked at myself one more time in the mirror before clutching my purse tighter and walking out of the room.
"Have I told you you look so fucking gorgeous right now?" Funke mentioned from behind me and I chuckled.
"Yeah you have. Thank you again," I mock curtseyed and she laughed.
Miles was standing in my living room. His hands tucked into his black pants pocket. He was dressed simply but casual. Black button up with black dress pants. The top three buttons of his shirt was open, giving a little view of his well sculptured chest.
He looked up when my heels clicked loudly on the tiled floor. I couldn't read his reaction because all I got was a blank stare as he looked at me. When I was close to the end of the stairs he made his way over to me and offered his hand which I took.
He placed a small kiss on my cheeks, "you look amazing." He complemented and I felt my cheeks flush.
"Thank you," I tried to avoid eye contact. "You clean up nice." I said not knowing exactly how to tell him he looked handsome at that moment.
He shrugged, "come on, let's not be later than we already are." He said and I took the bag that held two bottles of wine sitting on the couch and walked ahead of him.
"What took you so long?" I asked as I let him open my front door for me.
"I kind of lost track of time," he said and took the bag from me as I stepped out of the house.
"Have fun tonight guys!" Funke called from inside the house and I mentally face palmed myself, I had forgotten that she was inside.
"You too!" Miles called back before shutting the door behind him.
He opened the passengers door for me and I rolled my eyes at him. Though he does this everytime we go out together but of recent, the tiniest gestures from him makes my heart almost skip a beat.
As he closed the door for me my phone started ringing so I quickly fished it out of my purse and answered the call, it was my mother.
"Hey mum, Happy Thanksgiving." I said.
"Happy Thanksgiving dear, how are you?" She answered and I couldn't help but notice that she sounded tired.
"I'm fine, you? You sound tired,," I stated and she sighed.
"I am. Anyways, the pastor called today and it's like we're going to have a slight change of plans," she started and I began to feel uneasy about whatever she wanted to say.
"Okay? What is it?" I put the call on speaker phone so Miles could hear what mum had to say as he drove.
"The pastor wouldn't be available on that day and most likely all of January, he's burying his mother and the day his family chose was January nine so, we have to pick another date. I chose February sixth since he'll still be busy in January so what do you think?"
I looked at Miles and he nodded, "I don't really care." He whispered and I chuckled.
"Sure, February sixth is okay," I replied mum.
"Alright, I'll tell Mrs Jacobs now, you have a nice night."
"Alright, goodnight." I hung up.
"Shouldn't they just take this as a sign to cancel this wedding?" Miles said and I agreed with him.
"They're all stubborn," I shrugged.
"Tell me about it," he rolled his eyes.
"So any heads up?" I looked at him, hoping I could get all the help I needed.
"Everyone's around save for Caden, he's in college and apparently too busy to come." He started and I listened closely to everything he said. "Noah is the first, he's been engaged for a year now according to him, they're taking it slow, he's twenty nine and going to take over the family business some day."
"Second is Dorothea, she's been married for six months, she's twenty seven. She works with us but she's also into photography, more of that than the family business." He stole a glance at me, "then I'm the third, twenty five. Fourth is Caden, twenty, who won't be around today, then Maeve, seventeen, high school junior then the last is Millicent, fifteen, she's just stared highschool."
The car came to a final halt and he unclicked his seat belt then turned fully to look at me. "They're all cool and very different, Dorothea and Millicent are the quiet ones, Noah is really loud, Maeve is like me, sometimes loud and sometimes quiet, Caden is the wild one, I feel like you'll like him better."
I sighed as I took in all the information, my nerves aren't completely calm but I can walk straight. "Alright," I undid my seat belt and began to.climb out of the car.
Miles rushed out of the car so before I could step out completely, he was by the door and holding it for me.
He held out his hand and I placed mine in his, "you ready?"
I nodded, "I guess."
"You'll be fine, trust me." He smiled and that did a little trick of calming my nerves better.
He began to lead the way to the front door as we walked hand in hand, none of us making an effort to let go of the other.
The house was big, probably as big as my dad's. There were three cars parked plus Miles' making it four.
"The pool is out back," Miles stated and I nodded.
When we got to the front door, I took the bag I brought from home from Miles and as he opened the door, I felt my heart leave my chest.
