Chapter 24
His Demands: An Age Gap, Billionaire Boss Romance (Silver Fox Daddies)
âWhat the hell is going on, Ivan?â she demands, her voice sharp, cutting through the silence in the room. Her eyes, usually so warm, so understanding, now bore into me with an intensity that demands truth.
The tremors in Julieâs body show the fear coursing through her, but itâs her anger that resonates more profoundly. Sheâs literally shaking, her eyes ablaze with a mixture of fear and fury. I reach out, trying to bridge the gap between us, to offer some semblance of comfort.
But she recoils, stepping away from me once more. Her withdrawal stings, more than I care to admit.
I know I canât keep evading her questions. But how do I explain a past so dark, so dangerous, without dragging her further into the mire? âItâs complicated,â I say, my voice steady but lacking conviction.
Her glare intensifies, and I can see the frustration building within her. âThatâs bullshit, Ivan. Stop lying to me. Am I in danger? Is Barb in danger?â Her voice cracks slightly, betraying the fear beneath her anger.
The question hangs heavily in the air, a stark reminder of the threat that now shadows our lives. âYou wonât be,â I say, trying to sound more confident than I feel. âNeither will your aunt. Iâll make sure of it.â
But my answer only seems to fuel her frustration. âWhat the hell does that mean?â she snaps, her patience wearing thin.
I take a deep breath, knowing I owe her the truth, or at least as much of it as I can share without putting her in more danger. âJulie, itâs complicated. My past with the Bratva⦠itâs something I thought Iâd left behind. Theyâre not people you walk away from easily. And now, theyâve come back, and theyâre using you to get to me.â
Julie looks at me, her eyes searching for assurance in my words. I can see the conflict within her, the struggle to reconcile the man she knows with the shadows of the man I used to be.
âSo youâre a Russian mobster?â she asks. I note the lack of surprise in her tone.
âI was. A long time ago. But I left that world.â
She chuckles but it holds no humor. âBoris seems to disagree with you on that.â
âIâll handle this, Julie,â I say, my voice firm. âTrust me. Iâll find a way to protect us both from whatever he has planned.â
The tension in the air grows thick as I try to navigate the conversation, my mind desperately searching for solutions. âIâm sending you to my cabin upstate. Itâs remote and safe. Youâll be out of harmâs way until I handle this.â
Her response is immediate and fierce. âYouâre not sending me anywhere, Ivan. Iâm not some package to be shipped off for safekeeping.â Her stance is defiant, her eyes ablaze with a determination both admirable and frustrating.
I try to reason with her, to explain the gravity of the situation. âJulie, you donât understand the kind of danger weâre dealing with. The Bratva isnât just some street gang; theyâre a powerful criminal organization with a very long reach.â
Her face falls, a look of betrayal and hurt that cuts deeper than any physical wound could. âIvan, why didnât you tell me this before? How could you keep something like this from me?â
I reach out to her, but again she steps back, her trust in me clearly shaken. âI thought I could protect you from it, keep it buried. I didnât want my past to taint the life weâre trying to build together.â
âBut now it has,â she whispers, her voice barely audible. âAnd you think sending me away will fix this?â
I shake my head, struggling to find the words to convey the depth of my concern for her safety. âItâs not about fixing it, Julie. Itâs about keeping you safe. I canât risk anything happening to you.â
Her eyes glisten with unshed tears, a turmoil of emotions playing across her face. âAnd what about you, Ivan? Whoâs going to keep you safe?â
I set my jaw, a resolve firming within me. âIâll handle Boris and the Bratva. Iâll find a way to end this, once and for all. But I need to know youâre out of the danger zone first. Please, Julie, trust me on this.â
Julieâs stance is resolute, her eyes demanding honesty. âIf you want me to trust you, I need to know everything. All of it. I need to know who you really are.â
I take a deep breath, knowing that the time for keeping secrets has passed. âIt all started with my fatherâs death,â I begin, my voice heavy as memories Iâve long tried to bury begin to resurface. âHe was killed by a powerful Bratva in Russia. My mother, my brother, Fyodor and I had to flee. We ended up here, in New York. It was a hard life and we struggled to make ends meet.â
Her expression softens slightly, but her gaze remains intense, urging me to continue.
âI was young, angry, and desperate,â I confess. âThatâs when I got involved with the Mikhailov Bratva. They offered protection, a sense of belonging, and a way to make money. It was easy to get into as it was what I knew from my homeland. I was good at it, too good. I climbed the ranks, did things Iâm not proud of.â
Julie swallows hard, her eyes reflecting the shock of my revelations. âBut how did you get from there to here? To being a respected businessman?â
âThat came later,â I explain, meeting her gaze. âThe former leader of the Bratva, he saw potential in me beyond the criminal world. He released me from my obligations after Iâd made them millions and secured enough for myself to start anew. Thatâs when I started my company. I left that world behind, Julie. I havenât been involved in any criminal activities for over a decade.â
Her brow furrows, a mix of understanding and disbelief. âIf you were relieved of your obligation, why does Boris think youâre still beholden to them? Why come after you now?â
I shake my head, frustration evident in my tone. âI donât know. Maybe thereâs been a power shift within the Bratva, or maybe they just never truly let anyone go. But one thingâs clear, theyâre using my past to manipulate me now.â
Julie steps closer, her anger subsiding into concern. âIvan, this is serious. You canât just handle this on your own. We need to go to the police, get protection.â
I hesitate, the thought of involving law enforcement a complicated one. âItâs not that simple. Going to the police could escalate things. I need to handle this carefully, strategically.â
âBut what about us? What about our safety?â Her voice trembles slightly, betraying her fear yet again.
I reach out, taking her hands in mine. âIâll do everything in my power to protect you. I wonât let anything happen to you, Julie. Thatâs a promise.â
I squeeze her hands gently, trying to convey my determination. âIâll find a way to end this threat, once and for all. I have resources, connections. Iâm not that young, desperate boy anymore. Iâm a man with something to fight for nowâyou, our family, this business. I wonât let the Bratva destroy what Iâve built, what weâve built together.â
Julie nods, a silent understanding passing between us. âJust⦠just be careful, Ivan. I donât want to lose you.â
I pull her into a hug, holding her close. âYou wonât lose me. Weâre in this together. Weâll get through this, I promise.â
Settling onto the sofa, I hold Julieâs hand gently, grateful that she hasnât pulled away. Her presence, her touch, itâs a calming lifeline in the chaos thatâs threatening to engulf us.
Her hand tightens around mine, her resolve clear. âThen Iâm staying with you. Like you said, weâre in this together. Weâll face this together.â
The thought of placing her in the direct path of danger is unbearable. âNo, Julie. Itâs too risky. I couldnât bear it if something happened to you because of me.â
She searches my face, her own determination matching mine. âAnd I canât bear the thought of being safe while youâre here, facing this alone. Weâre in this together, Ivan. For better or worse.â
Her words strike a chord deep within me. Sheâs rightâweâre a team, in every sense of the word. But the thought of her in harmâs way is agonizing.
I take a deep breath, weighing my options. âAlright. Weâll go to the cabin together. Itâll give us some time away from the city, away from prying eyes. We can plan our next move from there.â
She nods, a small smile of relief crossing her lips. âThank you, Ivan. That means everything to me.â
âBut first,â I continue, âI need to talk to Fyodor. Heâs not just my brother; heâs my closest ally. If anyone can help us navigate this situation, itâs him.â
Julie leans into me, her presence a comforting warmth. âThen letâs do it. Letâs talk to Fyodor and figure out our strategy.â
I wrap my arm around her, drawing her close. In her embrace, I find strength. Together, weâll face whatever comes our way.
