Chapter 74

Familiars

The heroic villainess

This chapter's song is: Animals by Maroon 5!

Sylvia's POV:

There are many unanswered questions in any world. It could be: do pineapples really belong on pizzas, or why do men have nipples if they don't need them? But there is always an unanswered question for me... What the hell was going through this person's mind when he decided to become a teacher?

I really don't understand why someone would want to become the human version of the devil. Don't they remember what it was like to be students themselves? And if they do, why are they still inflicting the same torture that they had gone through on us?

By torture, I mean homework. Right now, I'm in magical theories of Gamaria. It's an optional course of study but of course, at least 3/4 of the main characters have to choose this subject...

Violet, Allen and Aiden chose Riwisian history while but the others were in this class. I'm sitting yet again next to Ace, looking up for inspiration, down in desperation and left and right for information. You guessed it: pop quiz. Although the lessons have been spiced up with magic... Let's just say once you get used to the spiciness, it turns bland.

What kind of question is this anyway? What is the 22nd component of Le Golmfers' 22nd theory of the '2009 ways to cook an ogre'? I'm sorry, but Le Golfman or whatever his name is has 29 different theories with hundreds of components unique to each theory. So how the frick-frack click-clack smick-smack do you expect me to remember how to flambé a mother(curse word) overgrown troll?! (It's an ogre, girl...)

I sneakily try to glance over Ace's paper, which by the way, was almost completed. His handwriting put mine to shame, and not only did he write perfectly, but he also did it all within ten minutes. Whenever I sensed Ace looking at me, I immediately rolled my eyes to my sheet.

Luna: Oh my, is little miss Scilla trying to cheat? Shut up Luna, I'm not cheating; I'm just... Browsing for different suggestions...

Astro: that's something a cheater would say. How very shameful, master. I bet your brother could answer this quiz with his eyes closed. Well then, tell him to come and join me then but until then, shut up. I'm trying to focus.

The time soon passed and I was dreading the day when the results would appear.

"Oh my, it seems that pop quiz really sucked the life out of you, my dearest fiancée," Ace commented as I slump onto the desk.

"Shh Ace, I'm trying to sort out a future plan where grades are not needed," I say.

"Well, I have a future plan that will allow you to spend the rest of your days in comfort while being waited on, hand and foot."

"What is it?" I look up at Ace in hope.

"The position of my wife and queen of Hefelia, no grades needed," Ace smiles as I scowl at him before generally thinking that I should just take the deal and live the rest of my life as a couch potato.

"Alright, what do we have next?" I asked Ace as I stretched my arms.

"We still have magical theories, it's a double lesson." With that remark, I slumped onto the desk again, hopelessly.

"Sylvia, please cheer up," Rin says from the other desk. Lucas was almost always in every class that Rin was in and he always sat next to her.

"Pfft, it's only natural that a pathetic human like her would find this trivial subject hard," Lucas sneered.

"What did you say, Dracula?" I glare at Lucas.

"How dare you call me Dracula, I am the future emperor of the demon country, you would be wise to mind your tone," Lucas threatens.

"Ooh, the future emperor of the superior demon country needs help to woo a gi-" my sentence was cut off by my mouth being clamped shut by magic. "Mmm! Mmmmmmm!" I attempt to speak and open my mouth but it was no use.

"Now now Lucas, I hope you can let go of my fiancée, it's not very polite to block her mouth, it is her favourite body part," Ace says as he waves his hand over my mouth and dispels the magic.

"If she dares to say that again, I'll permanently close her mouth forever, I'd be doing the world a favour," Lucas says.

"Why you-" my mouth was again blocked by Ace's hand as he whispered into my ear.

"Now now Sylvia, play nice." I grumble in reluctance as Ace lets go of my mouth, and the teacher addresses the group.

"Back to your seats, students, the next theory we are going to look at is Me-"

"Sorry I'm late!" The door was yet again burst open by none other than Lily Margaret. Something was off though. Her bobbed hair was dishevelled and her face and clothes were dirty.

"Miss Margaret... How could you possibly be late to a double lesson?" The teacher asks.

"I-I w-was," Lily stammers.

"Never mind, I don't care, just take your seat," the professor sighs as he turns back to the blackboard. Lily walked to her seat in the back with her head down. Some of the girls were sniggering, so I could imagine that they were the cause of Lily's appearance.

I forgot... The bullying. Let's see, should I step in and help lily or mind my own business? (Audience, you decide.)

"As I was saying, we are going to be focusing on Merlin's magical beast theory. Merlin was a great wizard who discovered 13 of the most important theories that run this country. This theory calculated the probability of someone being contracted to a magical beast. He said that magical beasts only make contracts with those who they deem as worthy. This does not include nobility or status. If a magical beast chooses you, then you are already one of the elitists. Now, does anyone in this class have a contracted beast?"

Out of 30 people, only four people put their hands up: me, Lucas, Ace and Lily. "Well, that's expected of the future rulers, and congratulations to you too, miss Margaret. Now, will you all please show your contracted beasts as a demonstration of the majestic creatures in our world," the professor asks. Ace went up first, revealing a blue and white Phoenix which seemed to glow.

"This is Zash, he's a lightning Phoenix," Ace introduces Zash as he let out a caw and ruffled his feathers. The class oohed and awed at Zash, including me. It's not every day you see a lightning Phoenix. Soon, a dark mist surrounded Lucas' shoulder as a black fairy appeared.

"This is Brylls, she's a reaper fairy. She feeds off death and decay, so I'll remind you not to get too close to her, she can smell fear," Lucas says nonchalantly as the fairy smiled evilly at us. The oohs and awes stopped as people backed away from the fairy.

Next, it was my turn. Come on, Luna and Astro. "This is Luna and Astro, a midnight cat and moonlight wolf," I introduce the flying animals.

Gradually the oohs and awes reappeared. We all looked at Lily next. She smiled as she summoned her familiar. There was a pink mist before a pop was headed and a cotton-candy-coloured bunny appeared.

"This is Candy, she's a light bunny." Not many people clapped. I clapped to encourage others to clap because otherwise, it would've been awkward. I can imagine why people weren't really surprised after a lightning Phoenix and a reaper fairy.

"Yes, thank you, students, now there are exceptions with magical beasts like miss Scilla, who is contracted with two magical beasts, but Merlin says that you can contract as many beasts as you can so long as you have the mana and will to control them, I would like you to-"

"Hey, stop that!" Everyone turned their heads to Rin, who was laughing as Lily's familiar was tickling her with its tail.

"Candy, what are you doing?" Lily asks. Soon, Brylls was playing with Rin's hair and even Ace and my familiars couldn't help but join in on the fun.

Rin was getting surrounded by the familiars as they played around with her.

"Zash, stop that."

"Luna! Astro! What are you doing?"

"Brylls, get back here."

Our callings to our familiars were ignored as they surrounded a laughing Rin and played with her.

"What's going on professor?" A student asked.

"Well, it seems like miss Kagamine's beast-taming magic is in motion. No animal can hate her, and they would literally abandon their owner if they tried to hurt her," the professor says.

Soon, Candy started to sprinkle some magic dust on Rin and soon a flower crown rested on her hair.

"Oh my, how lovely! You're just the sweetest thing ever!" Rin says as she hugs Candy. However, one look from Brylls scared Candy from Rin's arms. I guess she was jealous.

"Oh, and what a gorgeous fairy, she's so beautiful," Rin compliments. At times like these, I can only applaud Rin for her natural ability to befriend even a bringer of death.

"Pay close attention class, this is a perfect example of the 'Anomoly of Merlin'! The idea of having a bond with a familiar while not being your own. This anomaly can only happen with Beast Taming magic! Truly glorious magic!"

The claps began again as Rin bowed gracefully as thanks.

"Now, let's talk about Merlin's theory..."
