Sanyog - A Coincidence

She took the first bite of the onion pakoda and exclaimed … wow… so tasty … Sameep … you also have it … she added … and this red onion chutney its something different … too spicy but very delicious , my mouth is watering … I will finish the whole plate if you don’t grab it in time … ask Mayank also to have pakodas , he must be hungry also … so nice person … he assists you everywhere and looks after all your needs …

I thought … why I am here … to talk about pakodas or about Mayank and his care for me … no doubt … Mayank is really a good soul … but not now …

Did you say something … Sanyogita asked …

I replied, ‘nothing… really pakodas are very tasty and this chutney is different from the chutney we used to get in Indore , there they used to serve sweet and sour chutney of Imali …

Oh!... Sameep you remember everything … she exclaimed…

Yes … I do … some moments are crystal clear … I answered …

She further asked …. Do you remember that letter ?

I was shocked by her question and looked at her … she was gazing at the blue water and the ripples shining in the midday sunlight …

Sometimes Sameep we are caught … she added

What? I questioned

See these shining ripples on the surface of the water gang … she said

Yes , I replied … they are really pretty and catchy …

Now … you have hit the point … catchy … she said …

What do you mean … I asked

That letter Sameep … she said

That letter or those letters , I asked …what about those letters …

That’s what changed my life or my life’s direction and everything … she said

You never revealed about them anything at that time … I said

I was caught … trapped … Sameep …she replied

Trapped in what ? I questioned

Trapped in the ripples of attractive words … she said …

Who send you those letters , I don’t know , I said … and after so many years … what’s the relevance of talking about those letters …

How many times , Sameep , I wish , I wouldn’t have received those letters or I wouldn’t have read those letters … I regret it now … taking into consideration my nature at that time … I shouldn’t have read those letters … right … she said

Yes… right … you were such a studious and focused girl … how you received those letters and you read them , its still a surprise for me… I explained

That’s very right … but destiny Sameep … you can’t avoid what’s written here … she indicated towards her forehead…

From when you started believing in destiny, Sanyogita , you were the girl who only believed in right deeds …I asked

Sameep, she replied silently … you learn lot of things during the journey of your life …

Oh! My god , I exclaimed … you learned this …

Sameep … she shouted … stop teasing … I am very serious … this is very serious discussion ….

Ok… really sorry … but seriously I am hungry … you gulped all the pakodas in one go … I said smiling …

I am ashamed of myself … she spoke in a serious tone … pakodas are so tasty , I couldn’t control myself …

I was kidding , I added … but let’s order something else …

Panipuri … she said aloud …

I think , I will starve today , I said laughing …

What do you want then , she asked with rounded eyes …

I said to myself … I want your company till my last breath…

Sorry … did you say something … she asked

The lady vendor came to my help otherwise I would have caught … Sir, we have pithal and bhakari plate … shall I make you one for you?

Sure … I said … and asked Sanyogita … do you want one?

I will taste first , she replied …

Madam , you will love it … the lady intervened …

I said, ok make it two …

Sanyogita tell me now … who wrote those letters to you …

Is it necessary now … when we are enjoying this scenic view with local cuisines … she said …

I adamantly said , yes … I want to know … (without thinking ,whether its right or wrong to interfere in her life after so many years …)

She replied , why are you trying to scratch the healed wound …

What kind of reply is this … I asked in a frustrating tone … am I not your friend …

Yes , you are Sameep … one of my best friends … she replied …

I was doubtful … (one of or only one )

Sameep after our first failure in UPSC attempt after our post graduation you decided to go to Delhi … she said

Yes… I moved … because it was necessary for my family … I replied

Back in Indore … how much lonely I was … she stated …

Hamm… then … I asked

I still used to go to the library , our college library , Sameep … I used to study there … I used to linger under than Banyan tree where we used to discuss hours long without bothering about the audience who watched the free show … did you every think about me in Delhi… what would have happened with me … how I will be surviving without you …and suddenly she halted …

I was awestruck by her last statement …

There was a complete silence between us …

The lady interrupted and kept two plates of pithal and bhakari in front of us and of course Panipuri also …

I was sure … Sanyogita was in very awkward situation … so I changed the topic and said … I am hungry … let’s concentrate on food first …

We really enjoyed the taste and almost ate two to three bhakaris per head …

Mayank approached running … Sir … please hold this … and he handed two kulfis … he added … Sir … this local kulfi is vey yummy … on Sinhagd fort also, these kulfi vendors are there …

Sanyogita … said … thank you Mayank … we needed this most … a dessert at the end of the tasty meal … have you had your lunch?

He nodded and smiled … enjoy Sir and mam and left …

Suddenly , Sanyogita said , Sameep , those letter were written by Sumangal …

Dr. Archana Pandit
