Elizabeth, dressed in her hospital gown, sat on the window ledge. One foot dangled outside, suspended in midair. Her hair was disheveled, and her eyes were swollen red from crying..
âGet down,â David said. âStop making a scene.â
Elizabeth sobbed. âIâm not making a scene! I really donât want to live anymore. After you left last night, I couldnât sleep at all. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw a child crying, asking me why I didnât want him, why I was trying to kill him. Mr. Ellison, I followed you without complaint. I never enjoyed any luxuries, never got an official title. I never resented you for any of it. But now, I canât even keep my own child? Thatâs too cruel. And worse, my childâs fate is in Carolineâs hands? I canât accept that. If you had no choice, if there was some unavoidable reason why we couldnât keep this baby, I would understand. I would be willing to sacrifice for you. But why should Caroline be the one to decide-â
David cut her off, his voice calm. âCaroline wants you to keep it.â
The hospital room fell into an eerie silence.
