Chapter 49

Mr.Billionaire Meets Ms.Clumsy

"Ms Walker." Doctor Rodriguez stopped Emilyn.

"Doctor Rodriguez, hi." Emilyn turns around and greets him. "Is there something wrong?"

"No, I just want to inform you that someone wants to see you."

"Here? In the hospital?" Emilyn furrowed her eyebrows, he nods. With a curious mind, Emilyn follows Doctor Rodriguez to his office. He opens the door, and someone turns around behind the desk. Is him.

Doctor Rodriguez left excuses himself and left them alone in his office, "Please take a seat." He said.

"Mr Evans, if you are here to talk to me about me leaving your son. I'll be leaving." Emilyn places her hand on the doorknob.

"You need a donor right? I have what you need," he said. Emilyn hand froze on the doorknob and turn around to face him.

"What do you mean?" She asked.

Mr Evans leans forward and places his hand into a triangle formation on the table, "I've got a donor which matches your grandma." Emilyn hand on the doorknob fell and Mr Evans smile grew wider, he knew he got her attention.

"Okay, so what's the deal?" Emilyn asked, knowing he'll not give it to her easily.

With a side tug on his lips, he said, "If you leave my son, I'll give you the information of the donor and your grandma will be saved. Also, I'll cover the surgery fees."

"Why are you doing this? Why do you want me to leave your son so badly?" Emilyn asked.

"To tell you the truth, I'm not fond of you. With your status in the world and ..."

Emilyn interrupts him, "My status in the world has nothing to do with dating Christopher."

"What can you bring to my family? If you date my son, can you elevate his status even more?" Emilyn scrunched her eyebrows at his sentence. "You have no asset to be in my family or to Christopher's life."

"I'm sorry if I don't have any 'special assets' for you." She quote. "I have no other intentions towards your son. I love your son only for him, not anything else."

"Alright, let me tell you something." Mr Evans leans back on the chair. "I'll give you three days to think about it. Take my offer and leave my son or don't take my offer and your grandma dies." Emilyn narrowed her eyes at him and clenched her hands into a fist.

"Thank you for the offer." Emilyn showed him a small smile and unclenches her fist. " but I won't take it," She said firmly and open the door.

"You still have three days to decide." Mr Evans said before she left the office.

***

"Hi, is Mr Evans in?" Emilyn asked when she presses the intercom, the wall beside the tall black gate.

"State your business." The voice said sternly.

"I'm here to see Mr Evans, tell him Emilyn Walker is here to see him."

"Ms, you don't have an appointment with Mr Evans. So, I kindly ask you to leave this area.

"I'm not leaving until I see Mr Evans," Emilyn said firmly. "Tell your boss that Emilyn Walker is here to see him." She patiently waited for the voice to speak again.

"Ms, you may enter." The voice said, and the gate open. Emilyn walks onto the pathway to the house. When she reached the front door, the door is open, and someone is standing right at the door.

"Hi, Ms I'm here to escort you to Mr Evans office." She told her. Emilyn gave her a nod, and she leads her into the house.

"Here we are, Ms.," the girl said and excused herself. Emilyn knocks on the door; she enters until a voice told her to go in.

"Well, well, look what we have here. So, you decided to take my offer." Mr Evans said. "I've expected three days, but I'm glad you made your decision." He smiles.

"No," Emilyn said firmly. Mr Evans smile turns into a frown. "Sorry, but I don't need your charity."

"Ms Walker, do you know what are you doing? You are throwing your grandma's life away for the love of my son." He scoffs. "How pathetic."

"It is not pathetic. I would not take your dirty offer in exchange for my grandma's life and also giving up on your son." Emilyn spat. "I can find a match for my grandma by myself and with the help of the hospital."

"You do know that the doctor who is taking care of your grandma is my family doctor." Mr Evans continues. "I can simply take that privilege away, and leave no care for your grandma."

The anger boils within Emilyn, she clenched her fist into a ball and said, "take it away for all I care, I still have the capability to find another doctor."

"I don't need your charity, I don't need anything of yours," Emilyn told him with a rise to her voice. "Thank you for your time." She pressed her lips into a thin line. Emilyn turns around and heads towards the exit.

When she got out of the office, Emilyn let out a breath, and tears threaten to fall. She wipes it with the back of her hands and gets out of the house as quickly as she can.

***

"Do you think what I did was right?" Emilyn asks her grandma at the hospital after telling her everything.

"What do you think?" Grandma Lou asked

"I think...I... I did the right thing. I don't want to leave Christopher just because of his dad trying to threaten me. Taking his dirty charity to save your life, while I can do it by myself."

Grandma Lou smiled at her, "you did a great job, standing up to him." She took Emilyn's hand and squeezed it. "I'm proud of you."

"Thanks, grandma, I promise that I'll try my best to make you better."

"Of course, I know you will." Grandma Lou smiled.

After the visit, Emilyn head to Christopher's company. He told her that he is working late tonight, so she has decided to get him supper.

Emilyn knock on the door twice before entering, "Can I come in?" She asks at the entrance of his office.

Christopher looks up from his work, and he smiles, "of course. What are you doing here?"

"I've come with some food. Your favorite mushroom soup and garlic bread." Emilyn took out the food from the paper bag and placed it on his table.

"Yummy, thank you." He said. As he eats, Emilyn went behind him and gave him a shoulder massage. "That's good." He moans. "Why are you giving me a massage all of the sudden?"

"Just thought you need to loosen up the shoulder muscle," Emilyn told him. He continues eating his food while she massages him.

"Rist, I've to tell you something," Emilyn said cautiously.

"Okay? What is it?" Christopher asked, taking a bite on the bread. "This is good bread."

"There's someone whose liver is compatible with Grandma Lou's." Emilyn start. Christopher gave an 'mhm' reply. "But I rejected it."

"Why?" Christopher dropped his spoon into the soup and turns around in his chair.

"Your dad offered it," Emilyn said, biting her lip.

"My dad?" Christopher frown. "Did he threaten you to leave me again?" He stood up from his chair. Emilyn nod. "When?"

"Yesterday."

"Yesterday," he repeated. "Why didn't you tell me about it?" He said with his voice raise a little.

"Rist, I'm not done yet." Emilyn stops him. "I went over to your house after work and rejected his offer."

"You should have told me. Then, I could have negotiated with him."

"No, I don't need you to fight my battles. I can do this on my own." Emilyn said.

Christopher sighed and ran his hand through his hair, "I'm going to talk to him if he has a donor. It could save your grandma's life."

"Rist is fine. I can find other options." Emilyn told him. "I don't need your dad's help. He won't listen to you unless you break with me. Do you want that to happen?"

"Of course not." Christopher took both her hands in his.

"Then, forget about it and the hospital is already helping us."

"Alright, I'll talk with doctor Rodriguez to hurry up the process."

"Uhm...about that. I think we should change back to the previous doctor who had treated my grandma." Emilyn avoids eye contact with Christopher.

"Why?" Christopher narrowed his eyes.

"Just thinking about the medical fees."

"Don't worry about that I got it covered," Christopher said.

No, no, you don't have to do it. You paid for the previous medical fees. I don't want you to pay it for this time."

"Did my dad said something to you?" He asked.  Emilyn bit her lip and look down on the floor. "Tell me." He urges. "Don't you dare lie to me?"

Emilyn sigh and nod.

Christopher sighs, "Don't worry about it, let me worry about my dad. Alright?" He tugs her hair behind her ear

"Okay," Emilyn said softly.

***

"What do you think?" Emilyn shows Grandma Lou the bracelet she just made.

"Beautiful. I'm sure the kids will love it." Grandma Lou said. The orphanage will have a beading lesson for the kids since grandma can't make it. Emilyn have to step in and help.

"How's mine, Grandma Lou?" Ana showed her bracelet.

"Gorgeous, you have talented hands." Grandma Lou praises her breathlessly and cough. As she breathes in, a wheezing or whistling sound can be heard.

Emilyn caught in that sound and asked, "Grandma are you okay?" She knows that the past few days, Grandma Lou's breathing has been getting worse. But today, it seems worse. "I'm going to call the doctor." Emilyn presses the button on top of the bed. A few seconds later, doctor Rodriguez and a nurse came in.

"Doctor Rodriguez, my grandma is having a hard time breathing," Emilyn told him, she stood up from the chair.

"Let me check." Doctor Rodriguez did all the necessary checks.

"So, what's happening to her?" Emilyn asked when the doctor did not say anything after the check-up.

"Can I speak to you outside?" He told her. Emilyn nod and follow him outside. "I'm sorry to say this but your grandma is getting weaker. Her breathing has weakened, I don't think we can do anything about it."

"What do you mean? There's no saving her anymore?" Emilyn asked.

"Without a healthy liver, the human body cannot function. And if we don't find any within these few weeks, then I'm sorry."

Tears started to form in her eye, threatening to fall. Emilyn did not want to accept the fact that her grandma is going to leave her.

"I'm sorry, Emilyn." He apologizes.

Emilyn walked into the room with her head hung low. "What did the doctor said?" Ana asked. She looks at Grandma Lou lying on the bed and back to Ana.

Emilyn hesitates, she does not know how to tell Grandma Lou that she is not getting better. "Go ahead, Emilyn." Grandma Lou said.

Emilyn sigh, "the doctor said that grandma's body is getting weaker. Without a healthy liver, the body can't function properly, so..." Ana gasped and hugged her tightly.

"Grandma I'm so sorry."

"Don't be sorry...." Grandma Lou said every word breathlessly. "Is not your fault. I got to accept it." She opened her arms, and Emilyn ran to her.

"I don't want you to go." Emilyn sobbed.

"My sweet Emilyn, I'll never leave you. I'll always be with you right here." She pointed at her heart.

"Please don't go..." Emilyn muttered. Grandma Lou patted Emilyn's hair as she cried.

***

A month has passed, and Grandma Lou's condition gets worse every day. She can barely move and spoke no words—an oxygen mask strap around her mouth to help her breathe.

Every day, Emilyn will go in and talk to her grandma about what happen on that day. Also. how's her and Christopher relationship is going on. Grandma Lou would stay silent, or you can see a small smile appear on her lips. But as days go by, she has her eyes close and makes no movement at all.

"Hey, Emilyn." Ana and Finley walked into the room. "How is she."

"Not much difference," Emilyn said. "Grandma is Ana and Finley," She told her.

"I can't believe I will see grandma Lou laying on the bed. I remember she's always busy around the house cooking or doing some event in the charity." Finley said. He places a comforting hand on Emilyn's shoulder.

Ana and Finley accompanied her. They talk about anything they possibly can to Grandma Lou. She can hear them but couldn't respond.

Suddenly, the machine made a flatline sound, and Emilyn heart drop. Her eyes froze at the heart monitor. "Grandma!" Emilyn eyes were teary as she shouted for her.

The doctor came in a rush; Ana pulled her to the side and let them do their work. They bring out the CPR machine and pump it against her chest. But each time they pump, not a single movement.

Tears began to fall as Emilyn watch them try their best to bring her back. "Time of death, 9:35 pm." The doctor said.

"No, no!" Emilyn shouted, getting out of Ana's hold. "This can't be real. No. Help her, please," She begged.

"Emilyn, I'm so sorry." Doctor Rodriguez said. "I'm sorry."

"Grandma!" Emilyn cried and ran to her bed. "Please don't leave me alone, please. Wake up! Wake up." She shakes her, but nothing.

"Emilyn," Ana called. "She's gone."

"No." Emilyn shake her head.

"Emilyn," Finley said. "She's gone, Emilyn."

"No, she isn't," Emilyn said in a whisper, she slides down her knee touches the ground. Ana kneels next to Emilyn's and gave her a side hug.

Emilyn turns around and hugs Ana tight. "Ana, she's gone." Emilyn sobbed.

"I know, Emilyn. I know." Ana pats her hair as Emilyn cried on her shoulder.

"Come on girls, the nurses need to finish some procedure here." Finley leads them out of the room. "Sit here," Finley said, pointed to the chair in front of her. "I'm going to see what else is needed to do." He left.

After finishing whatever procedure was needed, Finley drove Emilyn back to her house.

"Do you want us to stay with you?" Ana asked.

"No, I want to be alone for now." Emilyn shakes her head.

"Are you sure? We can stay the night."  Ana said.

"Is fine. I just need some time alone."

"Alright, call us for anything. At any time, we will pick up." Ana said. Emilyn gave her a nod before entering her house.

"Why? Why me? Why does it have to happen to me?" Emilyn said to herself. She slides with her back on the door to the floor. Pull her knees in and hug it tight; her heart feels empty. The house feels empty.
