Gregory glanced at Dailey, taking in his expression.
Even though Dailey usually maintained a stoic face, even when he managed a smile, it was more subdued than most. Gregory had learned to interpret Dailey's emotions through observation and a little guesswork.
âWeâre about to tie the knot, shouldnât you be raising a glass in celebration with me?â Gregory asked, noting the cloud of gloom hanging over Dailey.
âWhatâs with this aura of doom around you?â
Dailey stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. He stood up, grabbed the bottle of whiskey, poured himself a generous glass, and downed it in one go.
Gregory pulled up a chair and sat across from him. Casually swirling his wine glass, he said, âYou might want to slow down. If you puke, Iâm not going to hold your hair back.â
âWonât need you to,â Dailey replied coldly, taking a swig straight from the bottle.
Gregory raised an eyebrow and remarked, âWhen youâre passed out later, Iâll find a waitress to shower and dress you, then send the pictures to Christine.â
Dailey slammed the bottle onto the coffee table.
Unfazed, Gregory continued swirling his wine, exuding an air of nonchalance, âRight now, Iâm the only one you can vent your frustrations on.â
âOut of brotherly love, Iâll share something with you,â Gregory added. âMy wife told me Christine hasnât even asked about the wedding. She doesnât care.â
Dailey had been on edge ever since Nellyâs scheming, feeling like stress was going to give him an ulcer.
âIâm not sure you consider me a brother,â Dailey retorted, annoyed. âYouâre just whipped.â
Gregory chuckled, âGuilty as charged. You wouldnât understand the joy of it, being single and all.â
Since Gregory got married, Dailey felt like they were speaking different languages. He continued drinking, frustrated.
Dailey rubbed his face in irritation. âYou saw today. Did I even get a chance to speak?â
This only stoked his anger further. âI donât get it.â
âMy family doesnât approve of Christine, but letâs be honest, Iâm miles better than Merritt. How could Christine choose him over me?â
âMaybe she just prefers someone younger,â Gregory shrugged.
Dailey fell silent, not wanting to continue the conversation. âGet out of my room.â
Without hesitation, Dailey responded, âNo need.â
âAlright then.â

Dailey quickly stood, striding over to block the door Gregory had just cracked open. With a bang, he shut it again.
Gregory crossed his arms and tilted his head, teasing, âSorry, Iâm a married man.â
Dailey realized how close heâd gotten and stepped back to put some space between them. âWhatâs your plan?â he asked directly.
