Chapter 41: This Season Is Unfortunately Over

Appleton HeartbreakWords: 1661

Selection Sunday passes without St. Lawrence making the NCAA tournament and so the season is officially over. Kyle Hayton was outstanding all season long but he simply can't do everything besides play goalie as the St. Lawrence Saints came up short in their mission to avenge the loss to Colgate who they lost to yet again in the ECAC Hockey semifinals in March of 2015. This team was otherworldly at points this season but just fell short in the end. St. Lawrence hockey fans tell this story ever since it occurred and for very good reason because this was a story of togetherness and triumph.

Saints fans had a year to remember in 2014-15 as they made it to Lake Placid for the first time in about fourteen years. This team was perseverant and triumphant all season long en route to the ECAC Hockey championship weekend and contender status for the future of the program as a whole. This St. Lawrence team set St. Lawrence for future success but the men from St. Lawrence University never saw this level of success until 2024 (we might take a look at that at a later date). This St. Lawrence team was a team I've idolized for nine years now and I'm so glad to have written this story.

This team won't go down as a national champion but they were one of the reasons I got so excited about college hockey at a young age. I liked the offensive firepower this St. Lawrence team had as well as the otherworldly goaltending by one Kyle Hayton. Kyle Hayton would go on to have a very illustrious career as college hockey was very kind to Kyle Hayton. This St. Lawrence was illustrious and I miss seeing Greg Carvel in Canton which terrified me as an opponent's fan.
