Caught off guard, I’m unable to guard the emotions that he invokes, the sudden proximity makes my

I look up at him in surprise. “I AM home,” I say firmly.

Atticus looks around. “You just moved here, it’s not home yet… look I know you wanted a change of

scenery, but with everything going on I don’t think it’s wise.”

“Atticus, I have a job, one I am enjoying, and I can’t just up and leave. They are understaffed right now,

and I know I’m saying this while taking a day off, but I really need to be here. Besides, I’m with my

mate. I’ll be fine.”

“A mate who isn’t all–powerful. He was almost defeated, remember?”

“He took on the Arkans alone!”

“I meant back then…”

I frown as I remember the battle once more.

Zade scoffs lightly. “Facing against 4 power holders… I for certain could have taken two of you down

with me.”

I bet one could have been me.

“Oh yeah? Then why didn’t you? Why surrender?” Atticus frowns.

“I don’t really feel the need to tell you,” Zade replies coldly.

Atticus opens his mouth when I raise my hand. “Ok boys behave, look, I’ll come back on a weekend to

give my statement, but I do have a lot going on so that’s the best I can do.”

He’s silent for a moment before he nods in defeat.

“Thank you for understanding,” I say, slapping my thigh in relief. I think that went okay. “Stay the night.

We have an extra room, anyway.”

Atticus frowns. “As much as I’d prefer a hotel, I think I will. I’ll feel better knowing I’m close if anything

was to happen.”

“You should still take the hotel, don’t go out of your way for no reason…I’ll make sure she’s taken good

care of,” Zade remarks but his words seem to insinuate something else and my throat seems suddenly
