Lainey

After the bowling alley, we all came home and my brothers went to bed.

Once I knew my parents were asleep I texted Maize and Trey to sneak over.

They both climbed the tree in my backyard and walked across the roof to my window.

I climbed out my window and joined them.

We sort of have this weird tradition where we sit on the roof outside my window and talk.

I know it's weird, but my roof is very flat.

"Since when did Jeremy put curtains in his room?" Maize asks as she plops down beside me.

I smile. "Since I caught him dancing around with no shirt on and filmed him."

To use as blackmail.

Maize snorts as Trey sits down beside me.

"Sorry, I'm a little late," Trey mumbles as he takes a wrapped box out of his pocket.

Maize shrugs. "It wasn't like we expected anything else."

Trey simply glares at her with his lips twitching.

I they need to quit the obnoxious flirting and get together.

"So is it time for my presents," I gush.

Trey hands me the wrapped box he was holding. "Happy birthday, Lainey."

I take the small box and rip it open to find...

A pack of cigarettes.

"What the hell?" I exclaim.

Trey laughs as he takes the box from me. "What it's your eighteen birthday."

Maize sighs, "How did you get them anyway?"

Trey pulls out a lighter that's decorated in pickles. "My brother got them from a friend at college and brought them to me."

"Your brother came home and you didn't tell me?" I ask in an upset tone.

Trey glares at me. "Lainey, my brother is two years older than you. Get over your infatuation."

I sigh "I'm not infatuated with him I just have a tiny crush."

Maize scoffs. "Lainey, you never have a 'tiny crush'."

Yeah, it's probably an infatuation because when I'm around him all I do is stare at him.

One time I 'accidentally' fell into him just so he would catch me.

"Fine, but I can't help that his brother is smoking hot," I snap.

Trey puts a cigarette in his mouth. "He has a girlfriend."

"Shit," I mumble and Trey snorts as he lights a cancer stick.

He hands Maize and I one. "If I get cancer from this I'm blaming you," Maize mumbles as she lights said reason for cancer.

Trey rolls his eyes. "You're not going to get cancer from one damn cigarette."

I finally light mine and we all do a little cheers and smoke a cigarette.

Maize and I both break out into coughing fits.

Trey simply blows smoke in both of our faces causing us to cough harder.

"Great present, fruit Trey," Maize says in -between coughs.

Trey takes another puff and winces. "It's not that bad."

"Bull crap," Maize and I both exclaim.

Trey rolls his eyes and we put out our cigarettes while Trey simply holds his in his hand as smoke twirls from it.

Maise pulls out a little box and an envelope. "Happy birthday, and don't worry it's better than Treys."

I roll my eyes and open the box. Inside is a small necklace with a flower pendant. On the back, it reads, Growing old will be more fun with you at my side.

"Awe Maze," I gush.

She smiles, "You stuck with me forever."

I laugh and Trey's lips twitch upwards. "Isn't that for couples or something?"

Maize flips him off.

I put the necklace on and Maize takes the envelope from me. "Now it's time to embarrass you."

I groan and Maizes pulls an old-looking piece of paper out.

"So, do you remember in eighth grade the school had a fundraiser with all the carnival games and a fortune teller?" Maize asks.

I nod and she continues, "Anyway, as most girls would do we went to get our fortunes read. But, since it was a kids event the fortuneteller was only granting wishes."

Trey laughs and Maize's smile grows. "So we went in and told her our wishes."

"Do you remember what yours was?"

I feel my cheeks heat from knowing what she is about to say. "Yes."

"For Trey who doesn't know, Lainey's wish was," She flattens the old, wrinkled paper.

"I wish that Owen Huntley would finally notice me. I wish that he would look at me like I'm the only girl he will ever see. Like he's the only one who can truly see me."

Trey bursts into laughter and I hide my face in my hands. "Why do you still have that, Maize?"

"Because you were supposed to keep it and read it on your 18th birthday," Maize says like it was obvious.

Oh, yeah I definitely keept yours, I think to myself.

"What was your wish?" Trey asks Maize.

"To own tons of cats," Maizes responds.

Trey and I both laugh as she takes a pen out of her pocket and pulls off the cap. "Okay, so sign here," she says and points to the line at the bottom of the page.

I glare at her, "Maize, I am not signing that."

She gives her best version of puppy dog eyes. "Oh please Lainey, it's your birthday."

I roll my eyes and sign the stupid paper. "There are you happy now?"

Her eyes practically shimmer in response. "Oh very much so!"

Trey takes another drag from his cigarette. "Why did you wait till now to bring out her wish?"

"Because fruit Trey, the rules to her specific wish stated she must wait till her eighteenth birthday," Maize snaps with more sass than a five-year-old girl at a Disney princess party.

I look up at the sky and take in all the stars, "I can't believe I ever had a crush on Owen Huntley. Let alone make wish about him noticing me."

Maize laughs, "It wasn't just noticing you. Lainey Smit, you would have been happy if Owen was the only person on this earth who could see you."

I roll my eyes and Trey chuckles. "Look a shooting star," He gasps.

The three of us watch in awe as it flies across the sky. "What a great way to end a birthday,"
