Chapter 1144:

“‘Mrs. Stevens, I’m just being honest with you,’” Hoyt said calmly. “‘And why would you think I’d back down?’”

Melany replied, her voice steady. “‘Because I’ve got something on you,’” he answered with a knowing look.

Melany hadn’t expected him to turn the tables like that. But she knew that she was running out of options.

“‘This is the last time I’m helping you!’” Melany said, grabbing the packet of powder.

“‘If you plan to keep threatening me after this, go ahead. My standing in the Stevens family has already been ruined,’” Melany added bitterly, a self-deprecating smile on her lips. She had to figure out how to squeeze more money out of the Stevens family before she left.

“‘Don’t worry. This powder won’t cause any problems. By helping me, you’re helping yourself too,’” Hoyt assured her.

Hoyt saw that she had agreed, and a smile spread across his face. “‘After all, you already can’t stand Allison,’” he said, hitting a nerve with Melany.

Tonight had been a huge blow to her, and it had all started with Allison. With that thought in her mind, Melany spoke flatly. “You keep the others busy, and I’ll make sure her reputation is destroyed tonight.”

Melany didn’t think she was to blame. It was all that woman’s fault. How could an orphan like Allison live a better life than hers?

A crowd gathered around Allison in the lounge of the banquet hall, all eager to win her favor.

“‘Ms. Clarke, your talent is absolutely incredible! I’d love to hear your thoughts on design.’”

“‘Don’t listen to him; he’s just trying to butter you up for an investment.’”

“‘Ms. Clarke, how about joining our company as a design consultant? We can make sure money is no problem!’”

“‘Everyone, step back. Someone as brilliant as Ms. Clarke wouldn’t be swayed by money. Right, Ms. Clarke? How about you join our company instead?’”

Many of the people present were quick to read the room. Once they realized Allison’s worth, they couldn’t wait to ingratiate themselves with her.

After all, Fabian was quite fond of her. Not to mention, the notoriously aloof Kellan had now become her boyfriend.

“‘For business matters, you can talk to my assistant,’” Allison gestured for Sherman to step forward. “‘I’m going to take a break now.’”

Sherman was momentarily puzzled. However, as Sherman noticed the hungry glances from the crowd, he quickly realized that Allison was using him as a shield.

Well, what else could they do, given that his boss had a soft spot for Allison?

Sherman forced a tight smile.

“‘Ms. Clarke is right. If you have any inquiries, please direct them to me, and I’ll pass them along to her.’”

The moment he finished speaking, the crowd surged toward him, eager to set up appointments.

Meanwhile, Allison quietly slipped away to a more secluded corner. Just then, Kellan wrapped up his conversation with Fabian and sat down across from her.
