Chapter 940:
But thinking about Ferdinand and Rebeccaâs interactions, she couldnât help but chuckle. âFrom sparring partners to sparks flying, huh?â
Her musings were confirmed when they arrived at Ontdale Airport. As Allison reached the exit, a familiar figure darted toward her.
âAllison, darling! Iâve missed you!â Rebecca threw her arms around her, enveloping her in a tight hug.
She pulled back just enough to scrutinize Allison, her eyes sharp with concern. âYou didnât get into trouble, did you?â
Allison shook her head, her smile warm but evasive. âOf course not. If I had, do you think Iâd be standing here, chatting with you?â
But before she could finish, Rebecca grabbed her wrist. âDonât even try it. Every time you smile like that, youâre definitely hiding something. Allison, no one knows you better than I do.â
Rebecca had been close friends with Allison for years, long enough to understand her like the back of her hand.
âLet me see,â she demanded.
Without waiting for a response, Rebecca tugged up Allisonâs sleeve. Her heart sank at the sight of the white bandage peeking out from her wrist. The evidence was undeniable â Allison was hurt.
Rebecca froze, her breath hitching. Her eyes then filled with tears.
âI knew it,â she choked out. âThat whole story about an overseas project was nothing but smoke and mirrors. You went abroad for something more dangerous, didnât you?â Her lashes trembled as she blinked.
âYou didnât want me to worry, did you?â Rebecca had always known, deep down.
Every time Allison disappeared on one of her secretive missions, she would cook up excuses â each more elaborate than the last. At first, Rebecca had been angry, but with time, she realized that her frustration was futile.
What could she do but fret in silence, knowing she was powerless to help?
âMr. Lloyd, how exactly did you take care of my precious Allison?â Rebeccaâs eyes immediately reddened.
She suspected that Allison had landed in trouble because of Kellan.
âI warned you, didnât I? If anything happens to her because of you, there will be hell to pay!â
Allison sighed and gently patted Rebeccaâs shoulder. âRebecca, donât work yourself into a frenzy. Iâm fine now, arenât I? And besides, this isnât his fault.â
Her tone was calm but firm as she offered a concise explanation.
âI went to Fleeingland searching for clues about my mother. Kellan got involved because I asked for his help. Without him, I wouldnât have made it back in one piece.â
âAllison, this injury is on me. If I had done things differently, you wouldnât have been hurt.â
Kellan, for his part, didnât defend himself. Instead, he wore an expression of quiet remorse. However, he could sense that Allison and Rebecca needed some time to catch up.
